Eurowings continues to ramp up in Stuttgart

The Lufthansa subsidiary says it is experiencing strong demand in Baden-Württemberg and is therefore expanding its offering again. The airline Eurowings will be offering around 2020 destinations from Stuttgart-Echterdingen in July 30. The carrier explains that demand is expected to rise sharply. Spain, Italy, Greece and Croatia in particular are said to be particularly in demand at the moment. Eurowings is therefore tripling its offering compared to June 2020 and will now offer around 600 departures from Stuttgart. "We are pleased that people want to fly again - and we are ready," says Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings. "Because we know that traveling in times of Corona is fraught with uncertainty. That is why we have implemented extensive protection and hygiene measures along the entire travel chain in order to provide our guests with the best possible support from travel planning to arrival at their destination and to give them a feeling of security." Arina Freitag, Managing Director of Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH, welcomes Eurowings' commitment: "We can feel that demand from Stuttgart is clearly picking up again. Eurowings, as the largest airline here at the state airport, is now once again adding many destinations to its program that are traditionally in high demand in the strong market here in Stuttgart. We as an airport are also doing everything we can to make the journey from check-in to the plane as safe as possible for travelers." Eurowings is offering the following destinations from Stuttgart in July 2020: Barcelona, Burgas, Bremen, Budapest, Corfu, Catania, Faro, Sylt, Hanover, Hamburg, Heraklion, Ibiza, Santorini, Kavala, London, Lisbon, Naples, Olbia, Mallorca, Pristina, Rhodes, Sarajevo, Thessaloniki, Split, Tirana, Berlin, Varna, Vienna, Zadar,

New non-stop record for Embraer E190-E2

The delivery flight of HB-AZE, Helvetic Airways' newest Embraer 190-E2, set a non-stop record for this type of aircraft. The regional jet flew from Natal, Brazil, to Zurich, Switzerland in nine hours and ten minutes. The distance was 7.150 kilometers. The flight took place under optimal conditions that cannot be compared to a passenger flight. Thanks to ideal weather conditions, the crew, consisting of José Alfredo Thomé Penna Jr. (Embraer pilot), Almir Suman de Azevedo (Embraer pilot), Giovanni Zanivan (Helvetic Airways pilot), Sebastian Fischer (Helvetic Airways mechanic) and Bruno Jans (Special Projects Helvetic Airways), completed their mission perfectly. The Embraer E190-E2 has a maximum take-off weight of 54 tons in passenger operation and can carry up to 110 passengers over 5200 km. Thanks to its impressive latest generation Pratt & Whitney engines (PW1900G), it boasts significantly lower kerosene consumption and achieves a fuel reduction of more than 20 percent per seat compared to its predecessor.

Wirecard Bank AG buries Niki credit card

Almost three years after the bankruptcies of Air Berlin and Niki as well as Topbonus, the last relic, the "Air Berlin & Niki Mastercard", is finally disappearing. Wirecard Bank AG has given notice to all customers. On September 3, 2020, one of the last relics of Air Berlin, Niki and Topbonus will finally disappear. Wirecard Bank AG, which belongs to the insolvent Wirecard AG, announced on Friday that the "Air Berlin & Niki Mastercard" will be permanently discontinued as of September 3, 2020. In contrast to other issuers, Wirecard Bank AG continued to offer the credit card product even after the bankruptcies of Topbonus, Air Berlin and Niki and even continued to issue cards in the design of the former airlines. This will soon be over, as all cardholders were formally given notice of termination on Friday. Wirecard Bank AG did not disclose how many credit card holders are affected by this measure. The Mastercard was launched after Raiffeisenbank International AG withdrew in order to be able to launch a successor credit card product in Austria. However, it could also be ordered by German customers.

ÖBB continue to expand AUA offer

From July 20th, a Railjet with an Austrian Airlines flight number will travel between Salzburg and Vienna Airport every hour between 5:00 a.m. and 20:30 p.m. Austrian Airlines is forced to compensate for the loss of the Salzburg-Vienna flight connection. And that is exactly what the carrier is doing: In cooperation with the ÖBB, from July 20th, up to 31 AIRail trains will travel daily between Salzburg Central Station and Vienna Airport. That is more than ten times the previous three connections per day. "Vienna Airport can be reached by train from Salzburg in well under three hours and without changing trains. Our AIRail offer is therefore a good and more environmentally friendly alternative to flying. We are confident that in the future we will be able to welcome many Austrian Airlines guests on the AIRail from Salzburg, who will then change to long-distance and Eastern European flights in Vienna," says Austrian Airlines CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech.

Kolba warns of a German voucher solution

Austrians should not accept compulsory vouchers, which are now covered by the Federal Government, but should insist on payment of their claims. Voucher instead of refund: Organizers of canceled package tours in Germany have recently been allowed to do this. Among other things, to prevent the travel companies from going bankrupt. But now the Austrian consumer advocate Peter Kolba is warning: Those affected should rather insist on payment. It is true that the newly issued regulation is more transparent than many other proposals to solve this problem. It would also properly fulfill all disclosure obligations, as orf.at reports. However, the insolvency insurance is only a type of default liability of the German federal government if the organizer's insurer refuses to pay - and this is something to be expected. Because the insurance only applies to package tours, not vouchers. This could lead to disputes and thus to longer waiting times.

Germany: Airbus is cutting around 3.000 jobs

Airbus recently announced that it would gradually cut almost 5.100 jobs. Now there are also more details about individual branches: According to this, there is talk of a total of 3.175 layoffs - at German locations alone. In Hamburg alone, including Buxtehude and Fuhlsbüttel, 2.325 jobs are to be lost. Stade and Bremen are also severely affected by this austerity measure and have to accept three-digit losses in staff numbers, as ndr.de reports. But it is not just the production area that is feeling the effects of this crisis. No area will be spared, says Human Resources Director Marco Wagner. It seems that the European aircraft manufacturer will emerge from the Corona crisis as a smaller company, Wagner continued.

TAP comes under state control

Portugal is again taking over the majority of TAP Air Portugal. But no forced nationalization: The Portuguese government was able to reach an agreement with TAP's private shareholders and is now acting - similar to the German state with Lufthansa - as the savior of the ailing traditional airline. An agreement to increase the state share from 50 to 72,5 percent was also agreed. It was also reportedly decided that the Atlantic Gateway group's shareholding would shrink from 45 to 22,5 percent. The state will pay 55 million euros for this, as aero.de reports. The employees' share will remain unchanged. They will continue to hold five percent of the share capital.

Helvetic Airways announces a new start

On Sunday, July 5, 2020, the regional airline Helvetic Airways will gradually resume flight operations. This will depend on demand and the global corona situation. "Even after the partial reopening of the inner-European borders, the situation remains very uncertain. Activities are slowly being ramped up again and there remains a high degree of uncertainty regarding actual demand. The current situation requires flexibility and the ability to react quickly in order to ensure stable and profitable operations. Against this background, thanks to a range of destinations adapted to the current conditions, we expect to be able to gradually increase capacity in the coming months. In July, 20-30 percent of our capacity will be used regularly and we will increase this continuously in late summer. Destinations can also be added to the program at short notice," explains Tobias Pogorevc, CEO of the Swiss company. Helvetic Airways will operate the inaugural flight on Sunday from Bern-Belp to Palma de Mallorca. On behalf of FlyBair, the airline will be flying from Bern and Sion with an Embraer 190-E1 until the end of the summer flight plan period. Pristina and Ohrid will be flown from the Zurich base. The flight plans will be adjusted regularly due to dynamic travel restrictions. In August, the FlyBair offer will be expanded to include Crete and Rhodes. Jerez de la Frontera, Kos, Menorca and Preveza will follow in September. When departures from Bern begin, a temporary crew and maintenance hub will be set up there.

Vienna: Eurowings Europe is looking for solutions

Palma de Mallorca, Pristina and Salzburg will continue to operate. In Vienna, dialogue is being sought with the social partners. While the Eurowings Europe base in Palma de Mallorca is back in the air and Salzburg has also been reactivated, the future in Vienna is not yet entirely clear. The background to this is that the route network from Vienna has been abandoned and the remaining routes are being served by Eurowings Germany from Germany. Eurowings Europe was actually supposed to fly with up to six Airbus jets on behalf of its sister company Austrian Airlines, but the corona pandemic is likely to have put a stop to that. AUA definitely has no need for wet-lease aircraft at the moment, because due to the current situation, the Lufthansa subsidiary cannot use all of the aircraft in its own fleet. The staff at the Eurowings Europe base in Vienna are on short-time work. According to a spokesperson, the long-term future is currently being evaluated with the social partners. The Pristina base is to be reactivated in the course of the summer. Eurowings Europe will fly exclusively under the Eurowings brand in the future, which is in some ways an indication that the AUA wet lease cannot be reactivated. A media representative from Eurowings explained: "Eurowings Europe has now taken off again - for example, we have reactivated our crews in Mallorca against the backdrop of the increasing interest in sunny destinations. In addition, numerous connections from Vienna to Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Stuttgart are now in the flight program. The Salzburg and Pristina locations will also follow in July. Flights will be carried out under the Eurowings brand. In order to fundamentally position Eurowings Europe and secure its future, we are
