Ukraine: 25 dead after an An-26 crash

An Antonov An-26 military aircraft crashed in eastern Ukraine on Friday. According to current information, 25 people were killed. According to the Ukrainian civil defense, two passengers initially survived the accident, but one of them died in hospital as a result. However, there are no precise and reliable details. The aircraft was on approach to land at Chuhuiv military airport. The cause of the crash is still completely unclear. Eyewitnesses report that the aircraft burst into flames. There are different reports as to whether this happened in the air or on the ground. According to Defense Minister Andrej Taran, the two black boxes are now being evaluated. The only thing that is certain is that the left engine of the An-26 probably failed. The aircraft has been in service since 1977.

737-Max: FAA chief Dickson conducts test flight himself

Steve Dickson, head of the US aviation authority FAA, now wants to check the safety of the Boeing 737 Max himself. The chief inspector ordered a test flight in which he will take part. Dickson has more than enough experience in the cockpit, as he flew for many years as a military pilot and in civilian jobs with Delta Air Lines. The "chief flight" is also likely to be a signal to the public, as the FAA has been under fire since the serious defects became known. Although numerous steps are still necessary for the model to be re-certified, Dickson obviously wants to symbolize that he himself is keeping an eye on the matter and will have the final say.

This is how you can recognize the A320 from Lauda Europe

Laudamotion, Lauda, Lauda Europe, Ryanair Austria or perhaps Airbus-flying Ryanair – the names given to the airline are now extremely extensive. The Austrian airline Lauda, officially Laudamotion GmbH, is being replaced by the Maltese Lauda Europe, officially Lauda Europe Ltd. But what is actually changing visibly for passengers? The biggest change was made immediately before Lauda's flight operations resumed, because Ryanair scrapped its own OE flight numbers and demoted the Austrian subsidiary to an internal wet lease operator. This means that all connections are officially Ryanair flights and Laudamotion (OE / LDM) and Lauda Europe (LW / LDA) are currently working as subcontractors. The Austrian company is being closed down and the Maltese Ryanair subsidiary is acting as its successor. This means that the Austrian national emblem on the tail of the aircraft is giving way to a Maltese one. The registrations of the Airbus A320 aircraft, which are attached next to the flag and under the wings, no longer begin with OE (Austria) but with 9H (Malta). These changes are the most obvious, because officially nothing has changed in the livery. But “nothing has changed” is not quite correct, because the text “laudamotion.com” that was previously stuck under the “Lauda” lettering to the right of the front entrance door is no longer visible on the Airbus A320s operated by Lauda Europe. When asked, the management did not want to comment on this and simply wrote that the photos provided were nice. No questions were answered in terms of content. Almost everything on board is unchanged. Only the safety cards have been replaced and now look much cheaper. Laudamotion relied on

Mannheim: Rhein-Neckar Air pauses again

The Rhein-Neckar-Air flights from Mannheim to Berlin-Tegel and Hamburg, operated by MHS Aviation, only resumed on September 14, 2020, but demand does not seem to be there at the moment. The company explained that passenger numbers are far below forecasts and that both routes are therefore suspended indefinitely. "However, due to rising infection rates and travel warnings for various countries, there is also a decline in demand within Germany. Passenger numbers were well below our forecasts," said Rhein-Neckar-Air Managing Director Dirk Eggert in a media statement. The virtual carrier has all flights operated by Bavarian MHS Aviation. Dornier 328 turboprop aircraft are used. These are also the only scheduled connections from Mannheim Regional Airport, which is severely limited in terms of the types of aircraft it can use due to its short runway.

Vienna Airport tests Japanese chatbot

Vienna-Schwechat Airport is currently testing the use of a chatbot for customer inquiries in the Airport City area. The company is relying on technology from the Japanese company "Bespoke". Initially, experience will be gained for around three months, after which the listed company will decide on a possible expansion of the use. In recent years, it has been shown time and again that customers are too lazy to read FAQ pages on homepages or to inform themselves - for example, via a quick Google search. As a result, the volume of emails and calls at many companies is very high. Most of the questions are questions whose answers can be found in the FAQ on the homepage anyway. Therefore, more and more companies are relying on chatbots to answer these questions automatically. Vienna Airport is now also testing such a solution. Whether questions about current travel regulations, the PCR test or service offers at the airport location: the new "Bebot" program is intended to provide passengers with answers to individual questions in real time and thus further improve Vienna Airport's customer service. A digital guidance system is also used. If, for example, you are looking for the nearest pharmacy or supermarket, you simply type this in as a question and the software will take you directly to your destination. Users with a mobile device can access the “Bebot” chat interface via the airport WiFi or at www.airport-city.at, i.e. without having to download an additional app. If the test run is successful, the content will be expanded. “We are taking the next step in digitalization and are using Bebot specifically to improve our

Google is now also selling ANA airline tickets

The US search engine giant Google is now also selling tickets for the Japanese airline All Nippon Airways. Tickets for the Star Alliance member can now be purchased directly via Google Flights, a price comparison service that is controversial in the industry. According to the carrier, the IATA New Distribution Capability standard is used. ANA sees Google Flights as an additional sales channel and expects high levels of acceptance among customers. "The introduction of the Book on Google service streamlines the process and enables flights to be booked easily in just a few steps," says the company. For the new service, ANA is using the industry-leading NDC aggregator, the British platform Travelfusion. ANA has been working continuously for years to make travel more convenient and will continue to develop its NDC platform in the future to simplify the booking of international flights.

Dortmund: Corona test center remains in operation

Dortmund Airport announced that the Corona test center operated by the Westphalia-Lippe Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians will remain in operation until at least October 25, 2020. Travelers returning from trips can continue to be tested there. Anyone who lands at Dortmund Airport from a risk area by October 25, 2020 can be tested for the coronavirus free of charge immediately after arrival. The 14-day quarantine that is required when returning from a risk area can thus be significantly shortened if the test result is negative. Travelers only have to be quarantined until they receive the negative test result. This is usually around three working days, the airport said in a press release.

Lufthansa: UFO does not take part in the union summit

Lufthansa management has invited three unions to talks on Monday. The Independent Flight Attendants Organisation has cancelled its participation and stated in a press release that it will not allow itself to be used as a fig leaf. "Since the much-publicised conclusion of our crisis and security package in June, we have been publicly cited again and again as an example of successful crisis collective agreements. However, since signing the agreement, the company has ignored every attempt to tackle the overstaffing in a socially acceptable and joint manner. The meeting next Monday suggests a situation that does not exist, because employees are seen as opponents rather than allies. There is no willingness to develop joint strategies. Breaking promises to Germanwings and SunExpress with drastic job cuts is an expression of the opposite of responsible and cooperative action, especially when at the same time people are being hired for Project Ocean for a meager wage. We will no longer allow ourselves to be used as a fig leaf for a functioning relationship with one another," explains Daniel Flohr, UFO chairman. "There have been no substantive discussions between Lufthansa and UFO for four months, although the need for action is great and urgent. The overstaffing in the parent company is being treated stepmotherly, and all our suggestions are simply ignored. Unfortunately, the attitude of management towards its employees and their representatives has not changed at all compared to the time before the crisis. In contrast, UFO has proven that it is able to find solutions and shape things, especially in times of crisis, and we have been demanding this from management for a long time," says Nicoley Baublies, UFO negotiator for Lufthansa. "We are not refusing to hold talks to address cabin issues. In fact, we are explicitly demanding them.

BER Terminal 2 is ready for operation

According to the operating company, Terminal 2 of Berlin-Brandenburg Airport, which has a capacity of six million passengers per year, is finished and ready for use. However, it is not due to open until 2021. In contrast to the "construction fiasco" Terminal 1, the second terminal was ordered turnkey from a general contractor. Flughafen Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH therefore did not act as the building owner itself. Apparently a very good decision, because Zech Bau SE, which was successful in a tender, delivered the agreed structure on time. With its own check-in, baggage drop-off and claim, state-of-the-art security checks and service facilities as well as retail and catering, Terminal 2 complements the capacity of the large passenger Terminal 1. In total, BER has capacity for over 1 million passengers with the three Terminals 2, 5 and 40. Terminal 2 is a key project in the expansion program and was completely realized in the record time of just two years. After the FBB Supervisory Board gave the go-ahead for Terminal 2 on July 7, 2017, planning began. The plan change decision was reached on July 18, 2018 and the building permit on July 24, 2018. The contract was awarded to the general contractor on September 17, 2018. Construction began in October 2018. The topping-out ceremony took place on July 30, 2019. The building was completed in summer 2020 and all expert inspections and the operating principle test were successfully completed. The notification of the start of use for Terminal 2 was submitted to the building supervisory authority this week. The costs of the entire project including the construction of Terminal 2, the planning and development as well as the
