Aegean adopts Heraklion-Vienna

The Greek Aegean Airlines will be flying from Vienna to Heraklion for the first time in the 2021 summer flight schedule. Two weekly rotations will be offered between May and September 2021. The route is new in the carrier's route network. In addition to the existing bases in Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Rhodes and Chania, Aegean will station one aircraft each on the islands of Mykonos, Santorini and Corfu in summer 2021. These will be used to fly to destinations in the DA-CH region, among others. "We are now at the most difficult turning point of the pandemic: we must create the necessary conditions for recovery as soon as health conditions permit. We have therefore now announced our extensive flight schedule for 2021 directly to the region and the islands, which will start at the end of March and thus shortly before Easter. Our commitment to safe travel in 2021, as in 2020, and our commitment to supporting tourism remain unchanged," said Dimitris Gerogiannis, CEO of Aegean. From Germany, the carrier will offer 15 routes from seven German airports. There will be daily flights to Heraklion on Crete from Frankfurt and Munich throughout the summer, as well as four times a week from Düsseldorf and Stuttgart - a new addition to the program are three weekly flights from the new Berlin capital airport BER. Rhodes will be served three times a week from Frankfurt and Munich, and there will also be two flights a week from the Bavarian capital to Santorini - another new connection. Thessaloniki will also be served from Nuremberg, Hamburg and Berlin. Swiss passengers will be able to reach five island destinations from Zurich and Geneva in the coming season. From Zurich

Not a single unit was delivered last month. The pandemic has not only put an end to this model, due to the current travel restrictions, there is hardly any demand for new aircraft worldwide.

Things are now getting tough for the workforce at AUA's parent company: According to a newspaper report, Lufthansa is laying off 29.000 employees by the end of the year as a result of the Corona crisis. Then around 109.000 employees will remain employed at the company. The lion's share of the termination letters - more than 20.000 to be exact - would go to foreign employees, as the Tagesschau reports. But that is far from over. A further 10.000 jobs are to be cut across Germany next year. This news probably didn't come as too much of a surprise to most people. Carsten Spohr recently made it clear that 27.000 full-time positions were redundant in view of the pandemic. According to this, the crane airline will shrink in the long term and emerge smaller from the Corona crisis. According to the report, three billion of the nine billion euros in state aid have been used up.
