Helsinki prepares EUR 400 million loan for Finnair

The Finnish government is currently preparing a EUR 400 million loan for Oneworld member Finnair. This is intended to give the carrier a helping hand, which has been hit hard by the corona crisis. Finnair's cash reserves had shrunk to EUR 2020 million by the third quarter of 725. "Finnair is preparing for 2021 with a number of scenarios for rebuilding our network. This facility will help us survive the pandemic period, regardless of which scenario is realized. We entered the Covid-19 pandemic with a strong balance sheet and cash position. Now we want to ensure that we survive this extraordinary time and continue to implement our strategy of connecting Asia and Europe and developing Finnair as a modern premium airline. The hybrid loan would be an important facet in ensuring our financial stability if the recovery in air traffic is slower than expected. We entered into several financing agreements in 2020 to strengthen our finances and enable a cost-efficient cost structure, and we plan to continue these measures,” explains company boss Topi Manner.

IATA wants to promote “digital passport”

In view of the corona crisis, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is pushing forward a kind of "passport" in electronic form. Passport data as well as corona vaccination and test certificates are to be stored in an app. A QR code is to be used to make checks easy. The aim of the initiative is to overturn the quarantine regulations of numerous countries. It is also argued that this electronic solution will further reduce contacts at airports. This should help prevent infections. The IATA wants to provide this to politicians "turnkey" and has already developed an app that will soon be tested for practical suitability in cooperation with British Airways. It is planned that this will then be generally available in the first quarter of 2021. The International Air Transport Association also wants to make the app available to airlines that are not members of the IATA. It is confident that the governments of many countries will accept this digital solution.

Heathrow: Supreme Court gives green light to third runway

The United Kingdom's highest court gave the green light for the construction of the planned third runway at London Heathrow Airport. A ban issued by the Court of Appeal at the beginning of the year was overturned. The lower court's ruling caused a stir internationally because it was based on the fact that the construction of a third runway was not compatible with the climate goals of the Paris Agreement. The Supreme Court saw the matter differently and overturned the decision. This means that the way is now finally clear. The court justified the current decision by saying that the plans were in line with the climate protection requirements at the time of submission. Heathrow can now continue with the project. The expansion is controversial and numerous affected parties, climate activists and even London's mayor Sadiq Kahn have taken the matter to court. However, the construction of the third runway is not yet a done deal, because formal planning permission has yet to be granted. The Supreme Court also ruled that the Paris Climate Agreement does not necessarily have to be taken into account.
