Shutdown for Lufthansa administration begins

For the first time in the history of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, the largest administrative location, which is located on the grounds of Frankfurt Airport, will be closed. Almost all employees have been on short-time work since today. The group announced that the measure will continue until February 2021. After that, operations at the Lufthansa Aviation Center will be restarted. But it will not be completely quiet, because those employees who are absolutely essential will continue to work at both the official headquarters in Cologne and the Frankfurt location. Home offices will be used as far as possible. In short: Lufthansa administration in Frankfurt am Main is entering a kind of "emergency operation" today. The official headquarters of Deutsche Lufthansa AG is in Cologne. The Frankfurt am Main location is much larger, however, and is the place of work for the vast majority of the administrative staff of Germany's largest airline. The closure of the headquarters in Cologne has been discussed again and again for several years, but has not yet been fully implemented. Internally, Cologne is called the "head office". Frankfurt is called the "Lufthansa Aviation Center".

Germany is making the Canaries a risk area again

The Federal Republic of Germany has once again declared the Canary Islands a so-called "risk area". This has consequences for people who want to spend a holiday there over Christmas/New Year: they face compulsory quarantine upon their return. Germany puts all people who have been in a "risk area" in quarantine for ten days. However, it is not until the fifth day at the earliest that you can "test yourself free" using a PCR test, which must be done at your own expense. The Robert Koch Institute announced that from Sunday the Canary Islands will once again be listed as a "risk area". This means that the whole of Spain is on Germany's "red list".

DER Touristik is cutting 253 full-time positions

The travel group DER Touristik is cutting 253 full-time positions in Cologne and Frankfurt am Main. According to the announcement, 14 management positions are also to be cut. The company puts this into perspective and only speaks of "calculated full-time positions" and aims to use severance payments to persuade as many employees as possible to leave the company voluntarily. Nevertheless, an agreement to this effect was concluded with the works council. Product management will now be placed under unified management. Until now, the locations operated largely independently of one another. Company boss Ingo Burmester explains that due to the travel restrictions, there is no other choice and that duplicate structures must now be dissolved for cost reasons.

ÖAMTC orders more helicopters

In mid-December, ÖAMTC Air Rescue signed a contract to purchase five Airbus Helicopters H135 emergency medical helicopters, including an option for a sixth. "With this decision, we are setting the course for the next ten years," says a satisfied Reinhard Kraxner, Managing Director of ÖAMTC Air Rescue. "The significantly more powerful helicopter, which is approved for instrument flight, brings us a decisive step closer to our vision of being able to help anywhere, any time and in any weather." ÖAMTC Air Rescue has been flying exclusively with EC 20s for over 135 years now. The five to six new helicopters are to gradually replace older models by mid-2024. "These helicopters are optimally tailored to our needs and prove themselves day after day and night after night in missions throughout Austria," says Kraxner. "It is therefore the logical consequence to gradually renew the fleet with the more powerful successor model, the H135." This single-fleet strategy reduces maintenance costs enormously and at the same time increases the availability of the fleet. "The ÖAMTC air rescue service is investing up to 30 million euros - including medical equipment - in the new machines," adds commercial director Marco Trefanitz. "But we know that this is an important step in the interests of our patients." With the digital avionics suite Helionix and a 4-axis autopilot, the new helicopters will have the latest electronics on board. The innovative system summarizes all data relevant to flight management on a few electronic displays, thus increasing the overview for the crew and thus safety. It is also of course compatible with the night vision goggles that are now used as standard. "Especially

IAG does not want to pay the purchase price for Air Europa until 2026

The respective supervisory boards of the International Airlines Group and the group's subsidiary Iberia have given the green light for the takeover of competitor Air Europa. The purchase price is only 500 million euros and is not to be paid until 2026. Furthermore, IAG obviously does not want any influence from the state. One condition is that the Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales should not send any supervisory board members. The sovereign wealth fund created due to the corona pandemic is granting Air Europa a loan of 475 million euros. It remains to be seen whether the government will agree to the late payment of the purchase price and also forego supervisory board seats.

Russia launches electronic visa

From January 1, 2021, tourist trips to the Russian Federation will be much easier, as the bureaucratic trip to the embassy will no longer be necessary. In the future, there will be an electronic visa that is valid for 16 days. This is already practiced for the Leningrad Oblast (St. Petersburg), among others. What is new is that the simplified procedure applies to the entire territory of the Russian Federation. The cost of the electronic visa is 40 US dollars and must be paid when submitting the online application. "The cost of the application is around 40 US dollars - no invitations, hotel reservations or other documents confirming the purpose of the trip are required," explains ÖAMTC expert Maria Renner. Austrian travelers, however, have not needed a visa to travel to Turkey since March 2020. A tourist stay of a maximum of 90 days is possible. Anyone who wants to stay longer must apply for a residence permit. The requirement to carry a spare tire in vehicles has also been expanded there.

People's need to travel across borders is still high. But contact and travel restrictions are counteracting this. The industry is relying on improved testing strategies. Winter is posing unprecedented challenges for the industry, and many players are facing existential threats. From January to November, 60,9 million passengers (arrivals and departs) were counted at German airports (-73,6%). At -73,5%, domestic German traffic is below the previous year's volume. European traffic is down by -73,1%. Intercontinental traffic is down by -76,2%. Commercial flight movements are down by -57,8%. Looking at the traffic figures is not a pleasant experience.
