Etihad Airways is putting Vienna on the back burner again

Etihad Airways actually wanted to start a non-stop connection from Abu Dhabi to Vienna in May 2020 and expand it quickly. But this will not happen in the 2021 summer flight schedule either, as the carrier has put the plans on hold for the time being. The state airline of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi confirmed to Aviation Direct that the route will not start at the end of March 2021 as recently announced. However, the plans to fly to Vienna are basically sticking to. Etihad Airways is now aiming to start the route from October 31, 2021. The airline did not give any further reasons for the decision. Last year, in the middle of the first lockdown phase, Etihad Airways announced the start of a connection from Abu Dhabi to Vienna. This was supposed to start in May 2020, but was repeatedly postponed without further communication. Most recently, the plan was to start at the end of March 2021, but the Gulf carrier will not meet this date either. There is currently no non-stop connection to Abu Dhabi from Vienna. The route was briefly served in the past by the now defunct Air Berlin subsidiary Niki, but was discontinued due to a lack of demand. Etihad Airways is currently unable to offer connecting flights to the capital of the United Arab Emirates, even through partners.

Singapore Airlines is celebrating its comeback in Munich

Singapore Airlines celebrated its comeback in Munich on Wednesday and will in future connect Germany's second-largest airport with Singapore three times a week. The flights will be operated on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays with Airbus A350-900s. "Our flights to Munich have been very important to us since they went into operation in 2010. The Bavarian capital is the perfect starting point for business and holiday travelers from southern Germany and Austria and the resumption of Singapore Airlines flights from Munich to Singapore offers excellent access to Asia, Australia and New Zealand. This development confirms our confidence in the beginning of a market recovery and we look forward to welcoming our customers on board soon," said Sek Eng Lee, Regional Vice President Europe of Singapore Airlines. Since December 2020, necessary travel such as business and official trips between Germany and Singapore can be requested under certain conditions. The Singaporean government published corresponding guidelines after both countries agreed on October 23, 2020 to introduce a so-called "Reciprocal Green Lane" (RGL), a mutual "green travel corridor". In addition, the two airports are linked by partnerships, and a "sister airport agreement" between Singapore Changi Airport and Munich Airport enables a lively exchange of expertise. "We are very pleased that Singapore Airlines, one of the most renowned airlines from Asia, will now be flying regularly from Munich again. The resumption of the non-stop connection from Munich to Singapore is a very important signal, especially in these difficult times. As a proven air bridge for business travelers and as an efficient transport route for freight,

Linz: AUA wants to hand over ground handling to ISS

After Salzburg and Klagenfurt, Austrian Airlines will also give up ground handling in Linz, Upper Austria. Negotiations are currently underway with the service provider ISS Ground Services, who could take over the staff. The affected AUA employees have already been informed in a virtual staff meeting and in writing. The cover letter available to Aviation Direct states: "Against the background of the currently extremely challenging economic situation due to the Corona crisis, both for LNZ Airport and OS, we have entered into trilateral talks with LNZ Airport and the ground handling service provider "ISS Ground Services" about the future setup of ground handling at the LNZ site. These talks also include a possible transfer of ground handling services to ISS Ground Services." In autumn 2020, it was announced that Austrian Airlines was giving up ground services in Klagenfurt and Salzburg. In Carinthia, a solution was found with the airport so that the affected AUA employees can move to a subsidiary of the airport as part of a transfer of operations. The situation is different in Salzburg, where negotiations about a transfer of operations have failed. The airline employees have the option of moving to Vienna, but this is unlikely to be practical for most Salzburg residents. "We can confirm that we recently started talks with Linz Airport and ISS Ground Services about a transfer of operations at the Austrian Airlines station there. The talks are about a transfer of operations to ISS Ground Services, which means that all 26 jobs at the site can be retained. The talks are still at a very early stage. An exact date for the planned change

Lufthansa: Ocean becomes Eurowings Discover

The Lufthansa subsidiary Ocean, which is controversial among trade unionists, will in future operate under the brand "Eurowings Discover". The company name of Ocean GmbH is to be changed accordingly shortly, reports the portal Airliners.de. The company will fly under the IATA code "4Y" and is scheduled to launch in summer 2021 with initially three Airbus A330s. Lufthansa explains that due to various legal regulations, it is necessary for Ocean to be given a corresponding name that refers to Eurowings. How the further expansion will develop cannot yet be estimated. This depends on the progress of the pandemic. According to Lufthansa, the aircraft operated by Eurowings Discover will also bear the corresponding addition. In what form this will be applied or whether the aircraft will even get a separate livery has not yet been determined. The project is massively controversial because there is no collective agreement. The German unions are therefore accusing the airline of dumping wages and tariff evasion. The company is looking for employees and, for example, is offering AUA flight attendants the opportunity to take time off to fly for Eurowings Discover. Employee representatives also criticize the fact that almost all planned routes are also served by Condor and the agreement on feeder flights has been terminated. Since both companies were rescued by the German state, the unions are demanding that state aid should not be used for predatory competition. Condor recently filed a complaint with the German Federal Cartel Office.

Postponement of the semester break: AK advises caution

The advancement of the semester break in Upper Austria announced yesterday was a slap in the face for many working parents. Anyone who had already agreed on a vacation with their employer cannot simply bring it forward by a week. The AK advocates family-friendly solutions. In principle, a vacation agreement is binding for both parties - unilateral withdrawal is only legally permissible in exceptional cases. According to the AK experts, the legal postponement of the semester break will in principle not constitute a reason for withdrawing from an agreed semester break vacation. Only if the purpose was a family vacation with the children can withdrawal be justified in individual cases. Since the children are now in home schooling due to the postponement, the argument can be that the recreational purpose of the vacation is thwarted. "Under no circumstances should employees unilaterally take their vacation in the new semester break without an agreement. That would be a crystal clear reason for dismissal," says AK President Kalliauer and recommends to the parents affected: "Speak to your employer immediately and get their consent to postpone the vacation. Then you are on the safe side." This is because employees have no right to have their employers approve their vacation requests for the brought-forward vacation date. A new vacation agreement is required. "In the spirit of a society-wide approach to the current crisis in solidarity, we should strive for solutions that are as amicable and family-friendly as possible. I therefore appeal to employers to meet the needs of working parents here and allow them to cancel their original vacation or bring it forward," the AK President continued. This can avoid internal company conflicts and probably also numerous labor court proceedings.

Innsbruck: 57 percent decline, three million euros loss

Innsbruck Airport recorded a decline of 57 percent last year and counted 487.450 passengers. The number of flight movements in charter and scheduled traffic fell by 59 percent to 4.980 takeoffs or landings. In comparison, the decline in Innsbruck was low. This is due to the fact that this airport has the majority of its annual traffic in the winter months. The first quarter of 2020 was still largely normal. The airport even managed to set a new record before air traffic collapsed abruptly due to the corona pandemic. Innsbruck was able to achieve around 2020 percent of its total annual traffic in the first three months of 40. The bottom line, however, is an expected annual loss of three million euros, the operating company announced. The audited balance sheet is not yet available, however. For the current year 2021, an even greater decline and "high economic losses" are expected, as winter business has completely collapsed. "Even though the Covid crisis had us firmly in its grip, we did everything in 2020 to work as efficiently as possible and at the same time ensure that the few flights continued to operate," explains airport boss Marco Pernetta. The airport is looking forward to the coming summer with optimism. Tourist demand is definitely high and the tour operators Idealtours, TUI, Christophorus Reisen and Gruber Reisen have once again put together attractive travel offers from Innsbruck. We assume that in the summer, with a vaccination and/or a negative test, you will again be able to comfortably start your vacation to the Mediterranean from Innsbruck. Italy, Croatia, Greece,

Bremen airport boss could soon own his own airfield

Former Tegel operations manager Elmar Kleinert wants to fulfill his dream and fly to a private airfield very close to his house. But his neighbors want to thwart his plans. They fear unbearable engine noise. Both parties should have certainty by Monday at the latest. The main committee of the Märkische Heide community, an hour and a half south of Berlin, is meeting then. At the top of the agenda: the people's representatives' statement on the "operation of a special landing field in Groß Leuthen" for the aviation authority. This refers to a 350-meter-long grass runway on the outskirts of the town that Kleinert leased with a friend when he was still working at Tegel Airport. The two aviation fans own two old "Piper Cup" propeller planes, reports bz-berlin.de. "I want to take off for the Baltic Sea once a week on average," says Kleinert, who is now the airport manager in Bremen - and owns a weekend house in Groß Leuthen. “Together we have applied for 300 takeoffs and landings per year.”

Record flight: Lufthansa brings research team to the Falkland Islands

The longest passenger flight in the history of Deutsche Lufthansa. This event will take place in a few days. And would probably never have happened without the Corona crisis. In normal times, researchers travel via South Africa. But because of the new Corona variant, this option is out of the question. That's where the crane airline comes in. And it is starting an unusual special flight: It will travel 13.000 kilometers from Hamburg towards the Falkland Islands. Nonstop. According to Flug Revue information, the Lufthansa A1 D-AIXN with researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute on board will take off on February 350st. The flight is expected to last over 15 hours. After landing at the British air force base RAF Mount Pleasant on the Falkland Islands, the research team will continue on to Antarctica by ship. Preparations for the special flight have already begun. All 18 crew members (four pilots, four technicians and ten flight attendants) and the scientists traveling with them are already in quarantine.

Air France-KLM: Tough negotiations on further financial aid

Over ten billion euros have already been invested in the listed Air France-KLM merger. But more is needed. Negotiations are not really getting off the ground. Talks between the French and Dutch governments about further financial aid for Air France-KLM have been slow since last year. Government representatives have been dealing with the issue since November, so far without any success. A further six billion euros are being discussed, reports Aero. This could be because both sides are not seeking a joint solution. Rather, they are only looking out for themselves. The Dutch would like to put their money directly into KLM and leave Air France out. The French side has also recently been making nationalist noises: "Air France-KLM is not a real group, they share a few parts of their operations and the Dutch have a lot of power," said Secretary of State in the French Ministry of Transport Jean-Baptiste Djebbari in October. "The question is what we should do and whether we should do it together."

Russian aviation slumped 46 percent

Russian airlines have come through the corona pandemic relatively unscathed, with a decline of "only" 46 percent recorded last year. The airlines transported a total of 69,17 million travelers, the civil aviation authority Rosaviatsiya announced. The size of the country and the associated opportunities to fly domestically were probably advantageous for the carriers. International traffic collapsed sharply due to the strict entry and quarantine regulations and hardly plays a role in the statistics. Most passengers flew with Aeroflot and S2020 Airlines in 7. The five largest airlines in the Russian Federation reported the following passenger numbers for the previous year: Aeroflot: 14,6 million passengers - 61 percent decline S7 Airlines: 12,3 million passengers - 31 percent decline Pobeda: 9,1 million passengers - 12 percent decline Rossiya: 5,7 million passengers - 51 percent decline Ural Airlines: 5,6 million passengers - 41 percent decline
