Kazakhstan: Fly Arystan plans to add 14 new routes

The Kazakh low-cost airline Fly Arystan carried 1,5 million passengers last year and plans to grow strongly this year. At least 14 additional routes are to be added. The aim is to fly around three million travelers. The fleet is to be expanded by three Airbus A320 aircraft, reports the Russian Aviation Insider portal. The route network currently includes 28 destinations, 14 of which are within Kazakhstan. Since operations began in May 2019, 2,2 million passengers have been transported. More than half of the tickets are said to have been sold for less than 23 dollars (one way).

El Al: Sun d'Or no longer flies on the Sabbath

Sun d'Or, the leisure division of El Al, will no longer fly on the Sabbath. This is a standardization of the group's behavior, as El Al itself does not fly on the important day in the Jewish faith. Until now, the carrier operated holiday and charter flights on the Sabbath under the Sun d'Or brand. Now, according to local media, the crews have been informed that this practice will be ended and that the entire El Al group will not operate any passenger flights on the Sabbath. However, this measure is unlikely to have primarily "religious reasons", but rather is due to the simple fact that tourists are currently only allowed to enter Israel with special permission and therefore there is no demand. El Al also wanted to fly to Salzburg under the Sun d'Or brand in the 2020 summer flight schedule. However, the corona pandemic put a stop to this, so the connection has not yet been established. According to a spokesman for the carrier, the plans are still in place and the route is expected to be started in summer 2021, provided that the entry and quarantine regulations on both sides are relaxed. The Corona pandemic also led to carriers registered in the Republic of Israel taking a Sabbath break. Israir recently announced that it would no longer fly on Saturdays. El Al never did this anyway - with the exception of the leisure brand Sun d'Or. At the moment, only Arkia flies on the Sabbath. The decisions are obviously primarily financial, as demand is extremely low due to the global crisis.

Bremen reports 74,2 percent fewer passengers

The corona pandemic is having a clear impact on passenger numbers at Bremen Airport. Last year, the airport recorded a 74,2 percent decline to 594.680 travelers. In 2019, there were 2.308.338 passengers. The number of takeoffs and landings fell by 50,4 percent to 14.661 flight movements. In the freight sector, however, Bremen recorded an increase of 118 percent to 1.151 tons. However, the airport did not really benefit from this, as the majority of cargo volume is transported in the cargo hold of passenger aircraft or in trucks. The bottom line is that this business segment declined by 19,4 percent.

Norway: Flyr wants to start with a non-transparent sales model

In summer 2021, the Norwegian start-up Flyr plans to launch with Boeing 737-800 aircraft. However, the tariff model appears extremely non-transparent and also raises questions about data protection: the company wants to sell tickets exclusively via an app. The sale of airline tickets is scheduled to start in April 2021. That alone would be a bold approach, but the company's announcement also states that a type of algorithm will be used and prices will be displayed individually. In concrete terms, this means that different prices may be displayed depending on the device and user. How and, in particular, on the basis of which factors the "personalized ticket price" is calculated is not known. It cannot therefore be ruled out that the Flyr app could be a veritable "data octopus". The start-up argues this quite differently, of course, and writes that this is the best way to meet the individual needs of travelers. Behind Flyr is Erik Braathen, who is not unknown in the industry. Together with investors, he wants to launch a new airline. This will initially offer flights within Norway and later also fly to larger cities in Europe. Initially, the company plans to launch with five Boeing 737-800s. Braathen sees market potential for up to 30 aircraft of this type, but not in the short term, but rather in the long term. To a certain extent, the chances will also depend on the continued performance of the badly hit competitor Norwegian Air Shuttle. According to a company statement, Flyr is said to have start-up capital of 60 million euros at its disposal.

The turnover of the accommodation establishments is currently available for the months January to November 2020. At 231.459.000 euros (-74,4%), Vienna's accommodation establishments were able to generate around three quarters less in this period than in the same period last year. The average occupancy rate of hotel beds fell to 5,8% in December (12/2019: 70,6%), and that of rooms to around 8% (12/2019: around 91%). In total, around 35.000 hotel beds were available in Vienna in December, which was around 32.000 beds (-47,8%) fewer than in December due to the lockdown.

Air Europa sale: IAG and Globalia agree

Air Europa owner Globalia and the International Airlines Group have agreed to amend the takeover agreement of November 4, 2019. According to this, IAG will now pay only 500 million euros instead of one billion euros, and only six years after the completion of the transaction. The revised terms of the amendment agreement require that Iberia and the Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales ("SEPI") successfully negotiate the non-financial terms related to SEPI's financial support for Air Europa in 2020. The IAG subsidiary intends to start talks with SEPI on these terms shortly. "Both Iberia and IAG are demonstrating their resilience in the face of the deepest crisis in the history of aviation. Being part of a large group is the best guarantee for overcoming the current market challenges, from which Air Europa will also benefit once the transaction is completed. I am pleased that we have reached an agreement with Globalia to postpone the payment until well into the expected recovery of air traffic after the end of the pandemic and to expect that the transaction will generate significant synergies," said IAG CEO Luis Gallego. Transaction to be completed in the second half of 2021 Globalia and IAG expect that, if all agreed conditions are met, the acquisition can be completed in the second half of 2021. However, the necessary antitrust approval from the EU Commission is still pending. The International Airlines Group also emphasizes in its statement that the takeover is a Class 2 transaction within the meaning of the listing rules.
