Eastern Airways launches new routes to Gibraltar

Eastern Airways is optimizing its route network from Birmingham and Southampton: The low-cost airline is adding Gibraltar to its flight schedule from May 2021. From May 28, the British overseas territory will be served twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays. Regional aircraft of the Embraer E190 brand will be used, as simpleflying.com reports. A one-way ticket will be available from just 74,99 British pounds. After four years of absence, the English carrier is thus connecting Birmingham Airport with Gibraltar again. "We are delighted to welcome Gibraltar back. Gibraltar is a popular destination for a sunny short break, but also an important business route that provides access to this British territory. We believe that this route will more than prove its worth in the future," said airport boss Tom Screen.

Lauda Europe: New base in Zadar from May 2021

Last year, the Austrian airline Laudamotion wanted to open a base in Zadar, Croatia. This did not happen due to the corona pandemic. From the beginning of May 2021, the Maltese successor company Lauda Europe wants to do this. Various destinations will be served with Airbus A320s on behalf of the group's sister company Ryanair DAC. In Zadar, there is also the quite absurd circumstance that aircraft from Buzz, Lauda Europe, Ryanair DAC and Malta Air will meet there. The vast majority of routes, however, will be operated by the only Airbus A320 operator in the group. Buzz will limit itself to the destinations Poznan and Prague. Malta Air will fly to Zadar from Germany and Italy. Everything that is left will be served by Ryanair DAC itself. According to the current planning status, Lauda Europe will serve the following destinations from Zadar under the FR code: Berlin-Brandenburg Vienna (served ex VIE) Weeze Memmingen Marseille Wroclaw Krakow Gothenburg The routes will start in May 2021, with the vast majority of the routes only starting in July, which has historically been a month of high demand. The company did not answer how many A320 aircraft will be stationed in the Croatian city. According to reports, there will initially be two aircraft. Given that the fleet currently consists of 29 aircraft and an increase of four more A320s is planned, the opening of further bases is expected in summer 2021. Due to the withdrawal from Düsseldorf and Stuttgart, only Vienna and Palma are currently left. However, the need for aircraft is not that high, even including Zadar. Overview of the fleet

Wizz Air is reducing Salzburg plans to three routes

In the summer of 2020, the low-cost airline Wizz Air announced a very extensive range of flights from Salzburg. Just a few weeks later, the Hungarian low-cost airline disappeared from the city of Mozart again. The possible comeback in the 2021 summer flight schedule will be scaled down again. Wizz Air has not yet included all of the routes announced from Salzburg, and those that were flown were discontinued after a few weeks due to the entry and quarantine regulations that had an extremely negative impact on demand. For example, Kiev-Zhuliany and Saint Petersburg have not yet been included. These two destinations are currently announced for the 2021 summer flight schedule. Wizz Air is currently only planning one more route from Austria's second largest airport, Varna. As of January 7, 2021, Larnaka, Tuzla and Belgrade were still included in the list of destinations planned from Salzburg for the 2021 summer flight schedule. These have since been removed from the plans. Sales have been discontinued and the destinations mentioned are no longer included in the low-cost airline's reservation system. As of February 5, 2021, Wizz Air plans to fly to the following destinations from Salzburg: Saint Petersburg Kyiv-Zhuliany Varna

Norway: Wizz Air closes the Trondheim base again

Only about two months ago, Wizz Air opened a new base in Trondheim, Norway, and announced a massive expansion. That is now over again, as the low-cost airline is closing the base again. Activities from Oslo-Gardermoen are not affected. On November 5, 2020, Wizz Air opened a base in the Norwegian capital and is attacking domestic traffic with two Airbus A321s stationed there. From the very beginning, there were critical voices from politicians, and there were even calls for a boycott of the low-cost airline. A second base was opened in Trondheim in December. Wizz Air spokesman András Rado told Norwegian media that there would be no changes to the route network or the number of weekly flights. Two Airbus A321s were most recently stationed in Trondheim. The company justifies the withdrawal of the aircraft with the tightened entry regulations that Norway has issued due to the corona mutations. It is still unclear whether Norwegian will reactivate the Trondheim base at a later date. In any case, demand is said to be extremely low. In summer 2021, some warm water destinations such as Alicante, Chania, Las Palmas, Split and Larnaka will be offered from Oslo.

Graz: SkyExpress flies to Naxos for Springer

In the 2021 summer flight schedule, the charter route to the Greek island of Naxos, which has been dormant since 2015, is celebrating its comeback in Graz. The direct flights will be operated by the Greek SkyExpress with ATR42 for the tour operator Springer Reisen. According to the tour operator, the Naxos flights will be offered between May and September 2021. Also new in the program is the destination Paros, which will be flown non-stop from Graz for Springer Reisen every Saturday. On this route, Skyexpress aircraft will use the latest additions to the fleet: Airbus A320neo. The charter connection between Graz and Naxos has a long tradition and was originally set up by the then Tyrolean charter boss Georg Pommer. When the DHC Dash 8-300 was phased out at the Austrian Airlines Group, Springer Reisen had to look for a new operator. They found what they were looking for in Bregenz at InterSky. The regional carrier flew this route for a few years, but had to file for bankruptcy in autumn 2015. Because the short runway at Naxos Airport requires the use of STOL aircraft, the route from Graz was idle for several years. Springer Reisen has now found a new partner in SkyExpress, who will operate the direct flights. However, the ATR42 will be subject to a payload restriction and, due to the distance, a refueling stop must be made in Athens. The terms "direct flight" and "non-stop flight" are often misunderstood. "Flying directly" does not mean that there is no stopover. Quite the opposite: direct flights can have as many stopovers as you like, as long as the flight number remains the same. Non-stop connections go from A to B without a stopover.
