Next ground incident in Gdansk: Partenavia P 68 crashes into Saab 340

For the third time in a matter of weeks, a collision occurred on the apron at Gdansk Airport on Tuesday. This time, the Hungarian budget airline Wizz Air was "lucky" that a Saab 340 belonging to Sprint Air was in the way. A Partenavia P 68 Observer 2 crashed into it. Wizz Air has twice been the victim of apron vehicles crashing into Airbus jets at the Polish airport. The first time, a service vehicle became jammed in the tail area and just a few weeks later a transporter crashed into an Airbus A320 in the area of the nose. The chances of another Wizz Air jet in Gdansk making an unwanted acquaintance on the ground were not all that bad. As photos published by the Polish portal trojmiasto.pl show, the SP-KPU, a Saab 340 belonging to Sprint Air, saved the Hungarian budget airline from another ground incident in Gdansk through no fault of its own. The Partenavia P 68 Observer 2 with the registration SP-FPM crashed into the turboprop aircraft and became jammed between the left wing and the fuselage. The cause of this collision is still unclear. Gdansk Airport confirmed on request that investigations are ongoing. There are no injuries, only material damage. However, this is unlikely to be cheap for either aircraft. However, it remains to be hoped that this will put an end to the almost "scary" series of ground crashes in Gdansk.

ECJ asks airlines to pay: Strikes are part of normal business operations

The Air Passenger Rights Regulation also covers a pilot strike: If a flight is cancelled or significantly delayed due to an announced strike by airline employees, the customer may have a right to compensation. The European Court of Justice announced this today after a ruling. The airline cannot argue that such a strike is an "extraordinary circumstance", especially if it complies with applicable law. Rather, the protest action should be qualified as a normal business activity, according to the ECJ. An extraordinary circumstance within the meaning of the Air Passenger Rights Regulation exists if the events, by their nature or cause, are not part of the normal exercise of the activity of the airline in question and are not actually "controllable". A dispute from Scandinavia was pending in this regard before the EU's highest judicial body. A passenger wants compensation of 250 euros from an airline because a flight from Malmö to Stockholm scheduled for April 2019 was cancelled on the same day due to a pilot strike in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The responsible Swedish court asked the ECJ to interpret the relevant regulation. The responsible ECJ Advocate General had taken the view in his opinion that a strike organized by trade unions was an exceptional circumstance - Aviation.Direct reported. However, the judges do not have to follow the Advocate General in their ruling and can decide otherwise, as was done in the present case.

Thailand is cautiously easing entry requirements

Travelers have had to forego holidays in Thailand since the beginning of the pandemic. The country, which relies heavily on tourism, is taking comparatively tough action against the spread of the virus. Now those responsible are taking at least a small step towards easing restrictions and are shortening the prescribed duration of quarantine from April 1st. Previously, those entering the country had to spend a full 14 days in isolation. This will not change for people from high-risk areas. But new regulations will now apply to travelers from selected countries: They only have to endure ten nights in one of the quarantine-certified hotels. In addition, two PCR tests must be carried out during the hotel stay. If these are negative, nothing would stand in the way of a "normal" vacation. This is reported by the specialist portal Reisetopia. Covid-19 vaccinated people, on the other hand, naturally enjoy more freedom. They only have to go into a short quarantine of seven nights and also be able to show a negative corona test on site before their vacation can begin. All this is just the beginning of Thailand's "grand reopening". Rumour has it that the government is planning a full reopening to tourists next autumn. By then, quarantine-free entry will be possible in selected regions. It remains to be seen whether this turns out to be true. The only thing that is certain is that any relaxations will only be available to people from low-risk countries.

Hannover Airport on the verge of job cuts

In view of the corona pandemic, Hanover Airport will reduce its workforce. This will primarily be implemented through early retirements, natural fluctuation without replacements and non-renewal of fixed-term contracts. Managing Director Raoul Hille told the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung that the company wants to "quickly reduce its debt burden" and "generate higher margins again". This also includes the workforce, which the manager wants to make "even leaner". Hanover boss Hille did not provide any information on the extent of the planned job cuts, but announced that the savings program will also have an impact on passengers. In the area of services, they must expect "minor cuts", the airport boss further told the Hannoversche Allgemeine.

Dispute over tests: Emirates receives another ban in Nigeria

The airline Emirates has been banned by the Nigerian government for the second time in two months. The background to this is a dispute in connection with the Covid testing program, in which both sides feel discriminated against to a certain extent. Cargo and ambulance flights are exempt from the flight ban. The Gulf carrier was already banned in Nigeria at the beginning of February 2021, but the dispute was quickly settled. The government of the African state considers it "nonsensical" that Emirates requires people leaving Nigeria to have a total of three negative corona tests. A PCR test must be completed one day before departure, a rapid antigen test at the airport and another PCR test after landing in Dubai. Nigeria's Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika considers this to be "excessive, nonsensical and discriminatory". “Emirates continues to engage in close dialogue with the relevant regulators and authorities in Nigeria and we are committed to making progress towards a solution to ensure the continuation and expansion of our business,” the airline concerned said in a statement.

Germany: Lockdown without quarantine for Mallorca vacationers

German holidaymakers who travel to Mallorca during the Easter holidays do not have to go into quarantine when they return to Germany. The federal and state governments have agreed that they "expect" airlines to carry out corona tests before the return flight - i.e. while still in Spain. However, there is no binding regulation that would oblige airlines to carry out such tests. The federal-state conference agreed that this was merely "expected". Tuifly, Lufthansa, Eurowings and Condor approached Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) yesterday and offered to carry out corona tests before the return flight to Germany. He then pushed for the federal-state conference to accept the offer. This saved the Easter season, because Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and some state premiers, among others, are said to want to introduce compulsory quarantine for everyone returning from holidays abroad. This was one of the things that was in the draft that Merkel took into negotiations with the state leaders. It was obviously not able to prevail. In stark contrast, Germany is to be sent into a "tightened lockdown". It is believed that closing grocery stores on Maundy Thursday can lead to a significant reduction in new infections. Supermarkets are allowed to reopen on Holy Saturday. It is doubtful whether the fact that there could be increased customer frequency in grocery stores on Wednesday and Saturday next week was taken into account.

Air France tests app on USA flights

Air France is testing a new app solution in collaboration with Paris-Charles de Gaulle, San Francisco and Los Angeles airports to make it easier for passengers to enter the country. Such a process has been in place since March 15, 2021 on routes to Pointe-à-Pitre and Fort-de-France. The PCR tests carried out in a partner laboratory are displayed in the ICC AOK Pass app. Thanks to a partnership between Air France, MedAire / International SOS, Groupe ADP, San Francisco International Airport and Los Angeles World Airports, customers who test the app benefit from special airport channels with priority access when boarding and passport control upon arrival in Paris. This program complements the program that Air France launched on March 11, 2021 on flights from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe) and Fort-de-France (Martinique) in the French Caribbean. It is completely free for customers and is carried out exclusively on a voluntary basis in the following four steps: The customer downloads the ICC AOK Pass mobile app available on the App Store, Google Play Store or Huawei App Store and performs the required PCR or LAMP test (according to the regulations applicable to the destination in question) in one of the partner laboratories. After performing the test, the laboratory provides the customer with the results with a PDF document and a QR code that can be securely downloaded into the ICC AOK Pass app. At the airport, on the day of departure, the customer is directed to a specific lane by special signage during boarding. When travel documents are checked, customers show the QR code displayed on their smartphone as proof of their
