Quarantine-free: Delta launches New York-Milan

US-based Delta Air Lines will also offer quarantine-free flights between New York-JFK and Milan-Malpensa from April 2, 2021. Such a program has already been launched to Rome. In order for passengers to benefit from it, they must adhere to the procedure exactly. "One year after air traffic collapsed to levels not seen in living memory, these COVID-tested, quarantine-free flights are a real step forward for the aviation industry," said Alain Bellemare, Delta's EVP and President - International. "We are gradually seeing more and more global vaccination programs, but until these are widespread, corridor flights like this one can help ensure that our customers and crew fly more safely." Flights to Milan will initially operate four times a week in April before switching to daily operations from May 2. The route to Rome will be offered three times a week, increased to four times a week in May and to a daily connection in June. Delta's COVID-tested flights began in December with the addition of flights from Atlanta to Rome and Amsterdam in collaboration with respective local partners Alitalia and KLM. The program offers customers the assurance of safer flying and is a clear path to supporting the global economic recovery as COVID-19 vaccination efforts expand worldwide. VIR: “What is more dangerous about a hotel room than a hardware store?”

The Association of Internet Travel Distribution eV has harshly criticized the recent federal-state conference and accused it of "sacrificing tourism again". VIR President Michael Buller is now demanding full compensation for the industry. The official also said it was "more than disappointing that, against better judgment, tourism is repeatedly being used as a scapegoat for its own failures in recent months." He also asked what is more dangerous about a hotel room than a hardware store. The association head is calling on politicians to open up the tourism industry as a whole with clear guidelines and requirements, without arbitrary quarantine rules making travel more difficult. "It's not about traveling over Easter, but about opening up a perspective at all. The concepts for this have been on the table for months from the individual industry representatives," said Michael Buller, annoyed that the experts and even the Robert Koch Institute's own study on vacation travel are being ignored by politicians. "An industry that has been closed for five months cannot be the cause of the third wave," the VIR board affirmed. The importance of tourism has also been "massively underestimated for a year." Michael Buller: "It is an industry with three million direct and more than 1,2 million indirect jobs, much larger than the automotive industry, for example." In comparison, it is inconceivable that mobility will be restricted by banning the production of cars in Germany for 12 months. As a consequence, the VIR board is demanding "full compensation" for tourism. "Here, the lost production must now also be compensated for.

Poland gives “LOT copy” a new name

Some time ago, the Polish state founded a "copy" of the LOT airline. So far, both the airline and the government have remained largely silent about the exact plans. It has now been announced that the new company has changed its name from "LOT Polish Airlines (Mk.II)" to LOT Airlines. Maciej Małecki, Deputy Minister for State Participations, told the wnp.pl portal that "LOT Airlines" is to be active in markets into which the "old LOT" has not yet expanded. The government member did not provide any further details, however. He pointed out that they do not want to give out too much information in order to surprise competitors. LOT Airlines is positioned as a subsidiary of LOT Polish Airlines. Małecki stressed that there should be no competition between the two companies. There should also be a clear strategy. He pointed out that there had been tensions between Eurolot and LOT in the past. Previous governments had also not had a clear strategy. They want to improve that now. Eurolot has not existed for several years. There seem to be obvious disagreements within the government regarding the "LOT copy". The company was founded in May 2020 by the state holding company PGL. This is also the owner of LOT Polish Airlines. In October 2020, the application for AOC and operating license was withdrawn without further explanation. Now Małecki says that the new company, renamed "LOT Airlines", is set to take off. Where, when and why, of course, he did not say. The project could be set up jointly with Hungary and the Czech Republic. What the Polish state wants to do with a copied LOT remains to be seen.

Mallorca: Airlines want to test before the return flight

The German government is currently considering introducing a mandatory quarantine for all people who have been on holiday abroad. Some airlines have suggested that tests be organised independently on Mallorca. Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) now wants to push for the plan. The Bild newspaper reports, citing Lufthansa, Eurowings, Tuifly, Condor and government circles, that all Mallorca holidaymakers are to be tested for the coronavirus on the island before departure. Suitable premises are currently being sought on the airport site. With this initiative, the industry is trying to save the Easter business, because if a mandatory quarantine on return to Germany is reintroduced, a wave of cancellations could be expected. Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer is said to have pushed for the tests organised by the airlines within the government and in the federal-state conference.
