Lufthansa orders five B787-9s and five A350-900s

Lufthansa has ordered five new long-haul aircraft each from Airbus and Boeing. These are A350-900s and B787-9s. The aircraft are intended for use by Lufthansa and are to replace four-engine Airbus A340s. The Supervisory Board approved the purchase today. These aircraft will be used by Lufthansa Airline, strengthening the core brand's five-star premium offering. As part of the long-term fleet renewal, a total of 175 new aircraft will be delivered to the airlines of the Lufthansa Group this decade. "Even in these challenging times, we are consistently investing in more modern, more economical and lower-emission aircraft. Due to anti-cyclical opportunities, we are modernizing our long-haul fleet even faster than planned before the start of the pandemic. The new aircraft are the most modern of their kind. We want to further expand our global leadership role, including through innovative premium products and a state-of-the-art fleet - especially out of responsibility towards the environment," said Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr. The first Boeing 787-9s are scheduled to fly for Lufthansa next winter, with the others to follow in the first half of 2022. With today's decision, the number of firm orders for Boeing 787-9 and Boeing 777-9 totals 45 aircraft. Lufthansa has held talks with Boeing and found a way to purchase five 787-9 aircraft that have already been produced. At the same time, the Group has agreed with the manufacturer to restructure the planned deliveries. The five newly ordered Airbus A350-900s will be delivered in 2027 and 2028. This increases the number of firm orders for the A350 to a total of 45 aircraft. At the same time, the Lufthansa Group has also agreed to restructure with this manufacturer.

Lufthansa Group and BASF are bringing Sharkskin technology into series production

Lufthansa jets will soon be able to save fuel with the help of a new type of surface film. The surface, jointly developed by BASF and Lufthansa Technik, is based on the ribbed skin of sharks, both companies reported on Monday. The improved aerodynamics can reduce air friction by around one percent, so that when used on the entire Lufthansa freighter fleet, annual savings of 3700 tons of kerosene are possible. This would avoid the emission of around 11 tons of climate-damaging carbon dioxide (CO700), which corresponds to around 2 freight flights from Frankfurt to Shanghai. From next year, all Lufthansa Cargo freighters, ten Boeing 48 jets, are to be covered with the new film. This applies to the lower half of the fuselage up to the sides, where freighters do not have any annoying rows of windows. Parts of the wing will also be covered, reported a spokesperson for Lufthansa Technik. In total, there will be around 777 square meters of shark skin per aircraft. So far, the film has been tested on around 800 square meters on the lower fuselage of a Boeing 500 jumbo. Lufthansa Technik also obtained approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for this. Lufthansa Technik and BASF intend to continue developing the new technology consistently towards additional aircraft types and even larger areas. In initial model calculations, the sharkskin technology could avoid up to 747 percent of CO3 emissions, the companies explained.

About Foodora: Finnair delivers home

Crisis makes people inventive: In the future, Finnair employees will again prepare various meals. However, these are not intended for consumption on board. As part of a new campaign, the carrier is starting a collaboration with the online delivery service Foodora today. The Finnish airline is also struggling with the consequences of the pandemic, and the company recently revised its savings targets further upwards. Despite these cuts, economic considerations are probably not neglected. Because from now on, Finnair is not only offering the so-called "Taste of Finnair" to passengers, but also delivering it to customers' own doorsteps. The company names the south of the country around the Finnish capital Helsinki as the first market. "Taste of Finnair was born out of a desire to expand our business. But above all to offer our employees something to do during the CoV crisis," says Marika Nieminen, Vice President Finnair Kitchen. The creations were inspired by the airline's business class dishes, the company says.

UK lifts travel ban on May 17, 2021

The United Kingdom plans to lift the ban on travel for tourist purposes on May 17, 2021. This means that the plan originally announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson is being adhered to. In recent weeks there have been some doubts as to whether this date will be met. The daily newspapers "Telegraph" and "Times" report, citing government circles, that the lifting is to take place on May 17, 2021. Among other things, reference is also made to the stable infection situation. The seven-day incidence rate is currently 24. However, the UK will also introduce some rules, because even after the deadline there will be no restrictions. The world will be colored into a traffic light map. If you have been in green countries, you must present a negative corona test. In yellow countries, you must also go into home quarantine. If you come from countries that the UK has marked red, you must quarantine in a hotel for ten days. All costs must be borne by the travelers themselves. It is still unclear whether there will be any relief for people who are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.
