Mückstein sees travel between Austria and Italy positively

Since midnight, travel between Italy and Austria has been largely normal again. People who have been vaccinated, recovered or tested can travel between the two countries without quarantine. Austria's Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein said: "Due to the decline in the number of infections in many European countries and the joint vaccination progress, we are able to give people more freedom to travel again. It is a good sign that the borders within Europe are reopening step by step. From Wednesday, the journey from Italy to Austria will also be possible without mandatory quarantine if a negative test result, proof of vaccination or proof of recovery is available. This means that the long-awaited cross-border exchange can take place again in the future - whether family visits or trips and excursions. I am particularly pleased about that."

Austria: Chamber of Commerce disappointed with new entry regulations

Since midnight, simpler entry regulations have been in force in Austria. Those coming from many countries who have been vaccinated, recovered or tested are no longer required to quarantine. However, the Chamber of Commerce believes that the relaxations do not go far enough. The Chamber of Commerce is critical of the government. "Proof of vaccination, testing or recovery is a prerequisite for any type of entry. Children aged 10 and over must be tested, including the immunity status of their parents or guardians. However, contrary to expectations and the ministry's original outline, the new regulation also presents some difficulties for the Austrian travel agency and hotel industry," the WKÖ said in a press release. "It is of course gratifying that it is now much easier to travel to many EU countries and that guests can come to us vice versa. On the other hand, it is disappointing and difficult that very important countries of origin, such as the USA, Great Britain or the United Arab Emirates, are completely prohibited from entering the country," commented Gregor Kadanka, Chairman of the Travel Agents' Association, and Susanne Kraus-Winkler, Chairwoman of the Hotel Industry Association in the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKÖ), on the current regulation. "It is a great pity that freedom of travel in Europe has not been completely restored," says Kadanka. If you have recovered, been vaccinated or tested, you can enter from most European countries, but for countries on another list, such as the important holiday destination Croatia, this only applies to a limited extent. That is incomprehensible." Kraus-Winkler emphasises: "Even guests from important origin markets for Austria, such as the Netherlands or Sweden, have to go into quarantine upon entry despite tests. This can

Associations criticize considerations on the short-haul ban

In Germany, the issue of short-haul flights may have come back into focus due to the election campaign. The Green Party's top candidate, Annalena Baerbock, has advocated, among other things, that flights should be "taxed in a way that is climate-friendly" and that the focus should be on rail travel. The Association of the German Aviation Industry and the business travel platform TravelPerk criticize the move and point out that domestic German connections are very important for long-haul hubs. A ban on short-haul flights would be fatal for the business travel segment. "The impact of air travel on the climate is undisputed and the Greens' move is fundamentally correct," explains Eugen Triebelhorn, Country Manager of the business travel platform TravelPerk. "Nevertheless, we cannot avoid short-haul flights any time soon. Abolishing domestic German flights by 2030 is simply not realistic." This is mainly due to a lack of alternatives, says the travel expert. The German rail network urgently needs to be expanded and modernized. Anyone travelling on business depends on a reliable and efficient means of transport. The overloaded German rail network is not attractive in the eyes of many business travellers – only the long overdue renovation of the rail infrastructure can change that. And that will take quite some time. "Now is the right time to shine with technical innovations instead of calling for bans," says Triebelhorn. While China, for example, has invested in high-speed rail lines over the last twenty years, innovative projects such as the magnetic levitation train have not been able to establish themselves in Germany. "Until the rail network is modernised, business travellers will choose the fast and reliable option, the plane," says Triebelhorn. A comparison with France, which announced in April that it would ban short-haul flights, is also worth mentioning.

The offer in Memmingen is being expanded further

At Memmingen Airport, the flight offer is being expanded week by week, according to its own information. The reason for this is the falling incidence rates in Europe and the resulting extensive opening of travel. Coming from a "normal risk area", a rapid test is sufficient to enter Germany. At Memmingen Airport, numerous popular travel destinations are starting up again just in time for Pentecost. These include Alghero in Sardinia, Brindisi, Sicily's capital Palermo and Lisbon. Long-standing holiday favorites such as Mallorca, Chania on Crete, Alicante and Faro in Portugal are already being flown to regularly. "None of our destinations are currently a virus variant or high incidence area. The destinations in Spain and Portugal are also no longer classified as risk areas. Returning to Germany is therefore possible without restrictions," explains Airport Sales Manager Marcel Schütz. "The measures taken offer protection and freedom and finally make traveling safe again." In addition to those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered, those who can show an antigen test (not older than 48 hours) or a PCR test (not older than 72 hours) do not have to go into quarantine. The confirmations can be easily uploaded with the digital entry registration. The flight schedule in Memmingen is getting more extensive from week to week. There is also a first flight on the program on May 20th. On this day, Wizz Air will take off for Sarajevo. The capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina is adding an important connection to the dense network of Eastern European travel destinations and is the third destination in the country that can be reached from Memmingen after Tuzla and Banja Luka. More premieres will follow. Tickets for the new connections to Rhodes, Corfu, Zagreb and Lappeenranta in Finland have long been available for booking.

Vienna is building a central long-distance bus station at the Stadion Center

Vienna currently has three long-distance bus stations: Erdberg, operated by Blaguss Reisen, Hauptbahnhof, operated by Postbus and Stadion-Center, operated by Gschwindl. All three locations have one thing in common: they are not quite worthy of a capital city and each of the three bus stations has its own shortcomings. It has now been decided that the future central long-distance bus station will be built at the Stadion-Center in the second district. The architectural competition has already been completed and the developers have selected the winning project. The details were presented on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, by Mayor Michael Ludwig together with City Councilor for Finance and Economic Affairs Peter Hanke and City Councilor for Planning Ulli Sima. From a total of 27 submitted projects, an expert jury selected the design by the Viennese architectural firm Burtscher-Durig ZT GmbH as the winner of the EU-wide, two-stage competition. In addition to the urban planning, architectural and functional solutions, the sustainability of the submitted projects and the economic efficiency of construction, operation and maintenance were also assessed. "Vienna, as the most liveable city in the world and as a major tourist destination, needs an attractive, international long-distance bus terminal. Until now, long-distance bus traffic in Vienna has been divided between three locations. The new central terminal will be the third strong pillar of long-distance passenger transport alongside the airport and the main train station. And it will be a striking calling card for the city and an impulse for the surrounding area: modern, clear, well organized in a friendly atmosphere. I am also particularly pleased that a Viennese architectural firm has managed to win the implementation competition," said Mayor Michael Ludwig. Striking, bright and airy: landmark and feel-good zone The new long-distance bus terminal is open, bright

Air Baltic introduces mandatory vaccination for new employees

The Latvian airline Air Baltic is rehiring 20 flight attendants who were laid off during the coronavirus pandemic. However, the condition for returning to work is vaccination against Covid-19. Anyone who wants to enter into an employment relationship with Air Baltic in the future can only do so if they can prove that they have been immunised against corona through vaccinations. The Latvian carrier announced that it will no longer hire unvaccinated people in the future. Whether this is in line with EU anti-discrimination guidelines is another matter. In Europe, Air Baltic is the first airline to publicly announce that Covid vaccinations are a condition for new employment. In the USA, Delta took the lead. "More than a year ago, we were forced to make difficult decisions, including letting go of many of our people. We offered them various benefits, including a social package. Today, we are proud to be able to hire again. We are confident about our future and know that we will soon return to our growth path, which will mean hundreds of new highly qualified job opportunities," explains company CEO Martin Gauss. "All new employees whose job duties are related to constant contact with other people must be vaccinated and remain active during the pandemic. We have a 5-star Covid-19 safety rating, and already by the end of May more than 70% of Air Baltic employees will have received their first Covid-19 vaccine."
