Salzburg: Wizz Air postpones St. Petersburg again

Wizz Air actually wanted to start a non-stop connection between St. Petersburg and Salzburg in September 2020. The start was postponed at regular intervals - most recently to July 2021. Now the first flight has been canceled again and rescheduled for September 19, 2021. If Wizz Air actually starts the route in September 2021, it would be around a year late, which is primarily due to the corona pandemic and the associated complicated entry and quarantine regulations. It remains to be seen whether the new date will hold. The route to Varna is scheduled to start from Salzburg on June 13, 2021 and will be served on Mondays and Fridays. Kyiv-Zhuliany is scheduled to follow on June 28, 2021 and will be flown on the same days. These two routes have also been postponed frequently by Wizz Air, sometimes at short notice. In the previous year, Wizz Air had announced numerous other routes, including Belgrade, and some of them also served them at short notice. According to the current information, these will not be reactivated. The Hungarian budget airline also has no further routes from Salzburg in its program, at least not in the short term. However, this can change at any time. In general, the city of Mozart, where, unlike Vienna, no aircraft are stationed, is to play an important role in the Austrian strategy in the future.

Vienna: Ryanair reactivates Agardir, Marseille and Pisa

With the start of the 2021/22 winter flight schedule period, the Ryanair Group intends to reactivate the destinations Agadir, Pisa and Marseille from Vienna-Schwechat. All three destinations were previously offered by the now defunct Laudamotion. The Atlantic city in Morocco was removed from the flight schedule by the then Laudamotion long before the Corona pandemic. The reason for this was that demand was weak and the route caused high costs for the airline due to the long flight time. Ryanair plans to fly between Vienna and Agadir again on Thursdays and Sundays from October 31, 2021. Pisa is also a former Lauda route that was removed from the flight schedule due to a lack of profitability. Ryanair will offer this on Mondays and Fridays from November 1, 2021. The route is to be served with aircraft from the Maltese subsidiary Lauda Europe. Marseille was suspended due to the Corona pandemic and is to be served three times a week from Vienna-Schwechat from November 2, 2021. Lauda Europe aircraft are used on Tuesdays and Saturdays. On Thursdays, the route is served by aircraft from sister company Malta Air from France.

May 2021: BER reports 362.000 passengers

Berlin Brandenburg Airport handled a total of 2021 passengers in May 362.000. Compared to April 2021, the number of passengers increased by around 100.000. A year ago, in the extreme crisis month of May 2020, 52.000 passengers were handled at the then Schönefeld and Tegel airports; in May 2019, the figure was more than 3,2 million passengers. A total of 1,2 million passengers used BER airport in the first five months of this year. Last month, there were around 5.400 flight movements at BER, around 600 more than in the previous month of April. In May 2020, only around 2.100 aircraft took off and landed in Schönefeld or Tegel; in May 2019, the figure was 26.100 aircraft. In terms of air freight, almost as many goods were handled last May as in April 2021 - around 2.200 tons. In the pre-crisis month of May 2019, the figure was 3.100 tonnes. "There are increasing signs that air traffic is slowly getting back on track. At the end of May, we had between 10.000 and 18.000 passengers a day. This means we are still a long way from normality. But falling infection rates, the increasing number of COVID-19 vaccinations and the associated travel easing are leading to greater security: more people are now fulfilling their holiday dreams. If passenger numbers continue to rise in summer and autumn, we could reach the figure of around 2021 million passengers forecast for 10," said Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH.

Wizz Air: More than half a billion net loss

The 2021 financial year also ended with a hefty loss for the Hungarian low-cost carrier. With 10 million passengers, Wizz Air generated revenues of EUR 739 million - a loss of 73 percent. The bottom line was a net loss of EUR 576,0 million, the company said in the press release. Thanks to the low cost structure, it was able to maintain flight operations while many competitors were forced to shut down large parts of their fleets. Brunner: A taxi to the airport must not be more expensive than the flight itself

The federal government is working on a solution that complies with EU law to oblige airlines to pass on passenger-related taxes and fees to end customers. State Secretary Magnus Brunner's credo is: "The taxi ride to the airport must not be more expensive than the flight itself." The airline customer must be served realistic prices; anything else does not correspond to reality, Brunner continued. This could also create awareness of environmental protection. "In concrete terms, I want to prevent 9,90 euro tickets, because these tempting offers do not represent the true cost of the flight!" He is aiming to implement true cost of flying by the end of 2022. A concrete model will be developed over the summer, and the parliamentary process is planned for autumn. "At the same time, we are continuing to fight at the European level to bring about a European solution for a common system."

May 2021: Ryanair Group reports 1,8 million passengers

In May 2021, the Ryanair Group counted around 1,8 million passengers across the group. In direct comparison with April 2021, around 800.000 more passengers were carried. The comparison with the same month last year is not meaningful. The background to this is that in May 2020, Ryanair's flight operations were largely suspended due to the first wave of corona. The group only maintained a few routes and only counted around 70.000 passengers at the time. The most recent transport performance is well below May 2019, when it still had 14,1 million passengers. In the first five months of the current year, the Ryanair Group had 30,2 million travelers on board. Compared to the same period last year, this represents a decrease of 75 percent. The background to this is that the calendar months of January and February as well as parts of March 2020 were not yet affected by the pandemic.

Turkey now also accepts rapid tests

Turkey is relaxing the entry requirements for people coming from Germany. In the future, results from rapid antigen tests that must not be older than 48 hours will also be accepted. Vaccinated and recovered people can enter the country without a test result. The last vaccination dose (second injection, except for Johnson & Johnson) must have been administered at least 14 days before entry. Those who have recovered can benefit from relief for up to six months. PCR test results must not be older than 72 hours. Regardless of this, a digital entry registration must still be made via the homepage of the Turkish Ministry of Health. However, there are no changes when returning to Germany. The Robert Koch Institute continues to classify Turkey as a high-incidence area. This may trigger a quarantine requirement. Travelers to Turkey should therefore definitely find out in advance what requirements must be met when entering or returning to Germany.
