More than 1,43 million passengers at BER in August

Summer travel traffic at Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport increased again last month. A total of 1,43 million passengers took off and landed at BER in August, around 180.000 more than in the holiday month of July 2021. A year ago, in the crisis month of August 2020, around 830.000 passengers were handled at the then Schönefeld and Tegel airports; in August 2019, there were almost 3,2 million passengers. Last month, around 12.700 flight movements took place at BER, 1.100 more than in July 2021. In August 2020, around 9.600 aircraft took off and landed in Schönefeld or Tegel; in August 2019, there were around 25.000 aircraft. In terms of air freight, around 2.150 tonnes of goods were handled last month, around 150 tonnes less than in July and around 500 tonnes more than in August 2020. In the pre-crisis month of August 2019, the figure was around 3.100 tonnes. "The further increase in passenger numbers is a positive sign, even if we are still a long way from achieving the result from the pre-crisis year of 2019. The vaccination protection that many people have now achieved ensures greater security when planning their holidays and is therefore also having a positive effect on demand for air traffic. Despite the still different travel regulations, passengers have regained confidence in the processes from check-in to baggage claim," says Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH.

Summer at Hotelplan Suisse above expectations

Hotelplan Suisse looks back on a satisfactory summer season. The Swiss tour operator is also expecting a good autumn business. The Swiss are a people who love to travel. This is shown by a look at the booking figures for the past three months of the Swiss tour operator Hotelplan Suisse. "From the beginning of June 2021, we clearly felt our customers' desire to travel. For several weeks, the number of bookings received was clearly higher than in 2019," explains Tim Bachmann, CEO of Hotelplan Suisse. The most popular destinations abroad were Greece (with the islands of Crete, Kos and Rhodes) followed by Spain (with Mallorca and the Canary Islands), Cyprus and Turkey. Overall, Switzerland was in fifth place among the most popular destinations this summer - a strong growth compared to 15th place in summer 2019. New hotline for entry regulations What was striking was the high level of information customers needed about entry and return regulations over the past few months. As the situation surrounding the Corona pandemic remains very volatile and in view of the upcoming autumn holidays, Hotelplan Suisse has decided to set up an information hotline. The service is offered in German, French and English from Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 18:00 p.m. Positive mood for the autumn season At this point in time, Hotelplan Suisse is expecting good autumn business. As in the summer, holidays in Greece, Spain, Turkey and Cyprus will probably be the most popular. But holidays in the Swiss mountains are also in high demand. "Bookings are understandably still being made at very short notice. However, we are seeing an increase in bookings for the autumn holidays

The first Embraer 190-E2 lands in the City of London

On Thursday evening, for the first time in history, a regular passenger flight with an Embraer 190-E2 landed at London City Airport. At exactly 17 p.m. local time, the fully occupied Helvetic Airways plane began landing at London City Airport. The Swiss airline operated flight LX49 on behalf of Swiss. The airport fire service greeted the aircraft with a befitting welcome, setting off jets of water. Following EASA approval for steep approaches, airlines can now fly to London City Airport with the Embraer E464-E190. The steep approach capability of the E2-E190 is made possible by a special software upgrade and the installation of a steep approach switch on the cockpit control panel. The pilots must be specially trained for the approach and departure. This is because the runway is very short at around 2 meters. This also requires a steep approach of 1200 degrees. About 5,5 percent of all scheduled flights at LCY were operated by E70 and E170. Eight airlines - BA CityFlyer, Alitalia, KLM Cityhopper, LOT Polish, Helvetic Airways, Lufthansa and Portugalia - flew E-Jets at LCY. The E190-E190 can fly just over 2 NM (2200 km) from London City, almost twice as far as the E4.074.

Air Wisconsin again in its own livery

For over 35 years, Air Wisconsin has hidden its identity on its aircraft, as it has been flying for larger airlines as feeder flights in their colors since 1985. Air Wisconsin currently flies in the colors of United Airlines as United Express with a fleet of 63 Bombardier CRJ200 regional jets. Just one day after the then brand new Appleton airport opened, an Air Wisconsin aircraft took off for the first time on August 23, 1965. 56 years ago, the nine-seat deHavilland Dove was used for four daily flights to Chicago-O'Hare. The aircraft were soon replaced by larger deHavilland Canada DHC-6 TwinOtters and later supplemented by Swearingen Metroliners. In the following years, Air Wisconsin constantly expanded its fleet and was also able to operate its first jets. With BAC One-Eleven, later BAe 146-200 and deHavilland Canada DHC-7, it became one of the largest independent regional airlines in the United States. But from 1985 onwards, the company began to use its own aircraft for other airlines. Initially, such contracts were with United Airlines (as United Express). Later, AirTran (as AirTranJetConnect), US Airways (as US Airways Express), and American Airlines (as American Eagle) followed. Since March 1, 2017, Air Wisconsin has again flown exclusively to around 75 destinations as United Express. But now the first Bombardier CRJ200 has been repainted in its own colors. The future N498AW will not fly passengers around, but cargo. This means that AirWis, as the airline is often called, is opening up a new business area. This is probably mainly due to the fact that passenger numbers have been increasing since 2014.

Book tip: “Remote, small but essential”

The Austrian Dieter Haselsteiner has brought out a new book that presents 100 smaller airports in Europe. Some of these are less well known even to die-hard aviation aficionados, but they do have scheduled flights. In a work entitled “Remote, small but essential – an indispensable guide to a selection of 100 European regional airports”, the author looks intensively at the importance for the regions, as many of the airports presented are located in very remote areas. “The airports portrayed are so interesting because they represent an indispensable infrastructure for the local population, ensuring not only medical care but also ethnic traffic, tourism and connections to the world because alternative means of transport do not exist or are very weak. In the book you will find, among other things, the world's northernmost commercially operated airport, the only airport in the world that uses the beach as a runway, and those airports that are connected by the shortest scheduled flight in the world. Embark on an exciting journey to remote places in Europe that are worth discovering,” Haselsteiner told Aviation.Direct. The new book was self-published and is currently available on Amazon for 29,95 euros. It is a printed paperback that is 136 pages long and written in English. Interested parties can order the book at this link or view a free sample.
