Salzburg: Eurowings has reactivated Cologne / Bonn

The Cologne/Bonn route is now available again from Salzburg. The Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings has reactivated this and is initially offering two rotations per week. Other destinations that this carrier offers from the city of Mozart are: Berlin, Düsseldorf and Hamburg. Lufthansa serves Frankfurt am Main up to three times a day. There is no longer a flight connection to the Austrian Airlines hub in Vienna. This has been shifted to rail in cooperation with the ÖBB. "We are pleased that with the flight connection to Cologne we can once again offer the entire, proven Germany program. After all, Germany is our largest and therefore most important market. The Frankfurt connection in particular is essential for business travelers," says Christopher Losmann, Head of Aviation & Sales. "It is all the more important that our Salzburg and Bavarian passengers eagerly book the flights on offer! This is the only way the airlines can offer or expand the flight connections at the existing frequency." Holiday destinations such as Heraklion and Palma de Mallorca will also be served beyond the autumn holidays this year. From the beginning of October 2021, Tenerife and Gran Canaria will also be on the flight schedule. For a few weeks now, there has also been a connection to the Emirates hub Dubai operated by FlyDubai. The comeback of the low-cost airline Wizz Air, which was briefly present in Salzburg in the summer of last year, is on permanent hold. Since then, the return has been postponed countless times. According to the current information, Kyiv-Zhulyany will be served from March 28, 2022. Flights to Saint Petersburg are scheduled to begin on December 17, 2021, and Varna is announced for June 13, 2022. Since the carrier frequently and sometimes at extremely short notice postpones the first flights to

Walsh: “Governments are prolonging the crisis unnecessarily”

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is intensifying the criticism that is being levelled at governments regarding the corona pandemic. Chairman Willie Walsh even believes that they are unnecessarily prolonging the crisis that airlines are currently in. The former IAG CEO told FVW, among other things: "This is no longer a crisis as a result of the pandemic, but a crisis as a result of government reactions to the pandemic in the form of restrictions." The IATA manager is emphatically demanding that governments allow vaccinated people to travel without restrictions. He admits that some measures at the beginning of the pandemic were necessary and sensible, because people did not really know what the coronavirus actually was. A lot of time has now passed and vaccination rates are rising rapidly in many countries. Health systems are also no longer on the verge of collapse. The widespread availability of vaccines has changed the situation and the IATA boss is therefore calling for vaccinated people to be allowed to travel freely and without restrictions. Willie Walsh's statement is probably not a coincidence, as various governments in Europe are working on how to deal with the upcoming winter. They say they want to avoid lockdowns, but they do not rule out lockdowns for the unvaccinated. Looking back at the past year, it is worth remembering that many politicians ruled out lockdowns at the time, but then they were repeatedly imposed.

August 2021: Karlsruhe surprises with more flight movements

In terms of take-offs and landings, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport was able to surpass the record year of 2021 by 2019 flight movements in August 161. There were 3.601 movements. Nevertheless, Managing Director Uwe Kotzan is satisfied: "Thanks to the efforts of our employees and partners, who operate under difficult and constantly changing conditions, Baden-Airpark was able to welcome up to 6.000 passengers a day." Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport is currently served by Corendon Airlines, Eurowings, Freebird, Pobeda, Ryanair and Wizz Air. From Friday, London Stansted will also be served again from this airport. Mediterranean: who bit me in the foot?

Enjoying the sun and the beach on the Mediterranean was and is certainly particularly nice for many this year. But an intrusive and extremely voracious species of fish is enjoying the increased influx of tourists in its own way. When you are comfortably chilling in shallow water, ideally on sandy ground, and simply enjoying the sea, it can happen that your legs suddenly tingle, sting or even hurt quite a bit. The sea is neither a bathtub nor an indoor pool, but a habitat for many species of animals. There are conflicts but also win-win situations for the aquatic creatures. But who is actually causing pain in the legs and feet on almost all Mediterranean beaches - whether Malta, Gozo, Mallorca, Italy, Spain, France, Israel, Croatia, Greece, Turkey and so on? It is not the Garra rufa, known as the "nibble fish", because these live in freshwater. Young white bream (Diplodus sargus) are the "culprits". They find human calluses and other skin remnants extremely tasty and are very reluctant to pass up this “delicacy”. Young members of this species mainly stay in shallow water near the shore and due to the fact that white bream are very prolific, they can be found pretty much everywhere. The animals are not at all shy and a group will often swim up to “explore”. If they don’t move or move very little, they are ready to feast. Now it simply depends on how young or small the animals are. If they are small specimens,

Against the trend: Azman Air fleets four-jet engines

The Nigerian Azman Air is developing its fleet contrary to the general trend and is using four-engine aircraft for long-haul routes. The first Airbus A5-340, the 600N-AAM, is being introduced into the fleet. The aircraft will have 409 seats and will be used on routes to Dubai, Jeddah and unspecified destinations in China. The 5N-AAM is around 15 years old and is owned by the carrier. The aircraft was originally delivered to Virgin Atlantic in 2006. This Airbus A340-600 was already in commercial use for Azman Air, but these were charter flights. On behalf of various governments, people evacuated from Kabul were flown from Tashkent to Europe. The long-haul jet was used on various of these special flights. Azman Air also operates two Boeing 737-300s and four Boeing 737-500s. Taking into account the recently introduced Airbus A340-600, the average age of the fleet is 22,2 years.

ABTA: Business trips are picking up speed

The business travel segment, which is important for airlines, is slowly picking up again, but is still well below the volume that existed in the "pre-Corona" period. This is the conclusion of a compact analysis by the Austrian Business Travel Association. According to it, 2021 percent more airline tickets were issued in the second quarter of 270. However, this is offset by a decrease of 84 percent in the first quarter. The bottom line is that the decline in the first half of 2021 compared to the same quarter last year is 61 percent. ABTA President Andreas Gruber, who works full-time for Siemens Austria, explains: "Companies are traveling to customers again, but many internal meetings are still being replaced by video conferences." For the compact analyses, ABTA evaluates the tickets issued by leading travel management companies. The values are therefore based on actual market data and not on surveys or personal assessments. The declines in the "crisis quarter" of January to March 2021 are dramatic compared to the relatively normal first quarter of 2020: minus 75 percent for business class tickets, minus 85 percent for economy tickets. A slight shift in the second quarter is notable: business class tickets increased by 497 percent; economy tickets only by 255 percent. For the first half of the year, which included the two extremely different quarters, the decline in business class tickets was 43 percent and for economy tickets 63 percent.
