Easyjet expands its presence in Bergamo

According to its own information, the Italian airport of Bergamo was able to achieve around 2021 percent of the traffic volume it had in the same period in 70 in August 2019. The low-cost airline Easyjet launched two new routes at the beginning of this week. So far, the low-cost airline has concentrated on the Malpensa airport in the Milan metropolitan region, where Terminal 2 was used more or less exclusively before Corona, and increasingly also Linate. Bergamo, which is very popular with low-cost airlines, has not really been relevant for Easyjet for some time. This is now changing, as the orange low-cost airline launched a domestic connection to Olbia in May. The destinations Amsterdam and Paris-Charles de Gaulle have now been added. There is no direct competitor on either route, as the Ryanair subsidiary Malta Air offers the destination Eindhoven in the direction of the Netherlands and in the French capital the airline flies to the far-flung Beauvais Airport. "It is always a triumph to welcome a new airline to our airport and to see the airline's rapid growth contribute to this success. By the end of October we will also welcome easyJet's connection to London Gatwick, meaning that our new partner will offer no less than 76.000 two-way seats next winter - a significant boost to our network," said Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation at Bergamo Airport.

Survey: 62 percent of Austrians still want to go on vacation this year

A recent survey has shown that around 62 percent of Austrians want to spend a vacation regardless of further developments in the Corona pandemic. Around half want to spend it in another European country. Over a quarter are planning a long-distance trip and around a fifth want to spend their vacation in Austria. 23 percent are undecided as to whether they will still travel, 15 percent have not planned any more vacations this year. The survey was carried out on behalf of the Restplatzbörse portal. 1.300 people took part. According to the survey, almost every second person prefers to book last minute, i.e. up to 14 days before the trip. This trend is also reflected in this year's booking figures from Restplatzbörse. "Compared to 2019, last minute bookings have more than doubled. Book today, travel tomorrow is the motto," says Roman Kresz, Head of Sales and Marketing at Restplatzbörse. No wonder: travel regulations and the situation in the vacation country can change at any time, which is why the decision about the vacation country has been more spontaneous than ever since Corona. Flexible cancellation conditions are important The Restplatzbörse wanted to know which criteria have played the biggest role in holiday bookings since Corona. Clearly in first place: the travel regulations. Free cancellation and rebooking options rank second and are therefore more important to those surveyed than a cheap price, which comes in third place. Kresz: "There are concerns that a booked trip cannot take place due to changed travel regulations. Many tour operators have already reacted and are offering flex tariffs with which the holiday can be canceled or rebooked free of charge up until shortly before arrival.

Azores Airlines wants to add Funchal-New York

The Portuguese Azores Airlines is about to start flights from Funchal to New York JFK. The aircraft type Airbus A321neo will be used. These are charter flights on behalf of Inovtravel. A total of 1 return flights are planned between November 2021, 21 and March 2022, 21. In the past, the carrier has repeatedly offered flights from Ponta Delgada to Canada and the United States of America. However, a permanent scheduled service has not yet been established. The Azores are repeatedly brought into play as a kind of mini-hub for flights from Europe to the United States. Easyjet and Ryanair were said to have corresponding ambitions and the feasibility was also repeatedly examined. However, both providers have decided against this step and have long since had no ambitions for long-haul flights. Azores Airlines repeatedly offers connections to the United States of America from Funchal, Ponta Delgada and Terceira. The demand is also related to the fact that the USA has a military presence in the Azores. In some cases, the entry formalities can be completed before departure, so that you can formally arrive in the United States as a domestic flight. However, this is not possible from all Azores airports. Azores Airlines is currently planning to operate charter flights from Ponta Delgada via Funchal. These will be operated with the Airbus A321neo aircraft. Nonstop flights from Ponta Delgada to Boston and Toronto are also offered. Boston and Toronto are also on the flight schedule from Terceira. The Airbus A321LR aircraft is used on these routes.

Boeing: Dreamliner delivery stop lasts even longer

The US aircraft manufacturer Boeing is still unable to deliver any 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The FAA has not yet given the green light and there is no prospect of this happening before the end of October 2021. A delivery ban has been imposed due to identified production defects. According to the Wall Street Journal, the FAA has not yet approved the improvements and so it will probably be some time before Boeing 787 long-haul jets can be delivered to customers again. The end of October 2021 is mentioned as a possible time horizon. In July 2021, Boeing had to admit that defects had been found in models that had not yet been delivered. These must be remedied. The FAA also wants to inspect the affected long-haul jets individually. Trust in the manufacturer has been dented, not least because of the B737 Max misery. The FAA also reserves the right to temporarily take Dreamliners that are already in service out of service for inspection purposes. Boeing has reduced the rate of production because, at least for the time being, the delivery stop means that it can only assemble in stock. This situation is now becoming problematic for the aircraft manufacturer because the more delays in delivery occur, the easier it is for airlines and lessors to withdraw from the purchase contract. The majority of the payment is also only due immediately before delivery.

August 2021: Europe reached 71 percent of the 2019 volume

In August 2019, European air traffic reached around 71 percent of the value achieved in 2019. This was announced by Eurocontrol. It is noteworthy that there are strong regional differences. These are primarily attributed to different Corona travel rules. The United Kingdom was at the bottom of the list, only achieving 51 percent of the volume of August 2019. The situation was very different in Albania, with 91 percent. Greece was also strong, with 81 percent. Italy was at 76 percent and Spain at 74 percent. The Federal Republic of Germany, with 65 percent of the value of August 2019, was only just ahead of the Netherlands, which achieved 61 percent. Domestic flights played a particularly important role in Spain, Greece and Italy. If you look at these separately, the volume of August 2019 was even exceeded.

Vaccine refusers: Aeroflot suspends pilots

The state-owned airline Aeroflot is stepping up its efforts to deal with flight personnel who do not want to be vaccinated. The first pilots were suspended from duty because of this, a company spokesman confirmed. The Aeroflot media office in Moscow did not know exactly how many pilots were involved. However, it was able to confirm that there are at least six pilots who do not want to be vaccinated. The company management has suspended them from duty without pay. The measure is to remain in place until they get vaccinated free of charge. The matter is quite controversial in Russia, as the pilots' union criticized RBC News for saying that it is discrimination. The argument is that pressure is currently only being put on the pilots, while there is no pressure for ground staff and flight attendants. It is also pointed out that no other Russian airline has made Covid vaccination compulsory. Aeroflot is likely to get support from the government, as it announced a few weeks ago that companies can suspend employees who do not want to be vaccinated from duty without pay. And that will continue until they get vaccinated. In this respect, the pressure is very high. In the Russian Federation, vaccines that were developed in the country are primarily used. These are Sputnik V, EpiVacCorona and CoviVac. Aeroflot stated that around 84 percent of its flight personnel are fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Sundair flies from Bremen to Beirut

The airline Sundair now connects Bremen with Beirut. For the time being, a weekly rotation will be offered, which will take place on Tuesdays. The carrier has been focusing on Beirut as a destination for some time. Sundair aircraft fly from Bremen, Hanover, Berlin and Düsseldorf to Lebanon. Competitors such as Condor and Eurowings have also discovered this destination for themselves. There is a certain basic demand in so-called ethnic traffic. This has been underestimated by many airlines to date. In terms of tourism, Lebanon is a region that is not very well developed, but it has a lot to offer. There are beautiful beaches on the Mediterranean, snow-capped mountains and, last but not least, Beirut is considered a stronghold of culture and the nightlife there is also impressive.
