Autumn holidays: Airport Weeze again at pre-Corona level for the first time

Weeze Airport is looking forward to the start of the North Rhine-Westphalian autumn holidays on October 8th. The airport will reach pre-coronavirus levels for the first time in the coming autumn holidays with 95 departures a week. "We are on a very positive path. We expect more than 60.000 guests during the autumn holidays. After the reluctance in recent months and a rather moderate summer, many people want to use the autumn holidays to fly to the sun or visit family and friends," says Sebastian Papst, Managing Director of Weeze Airport. The fact that many destination countries around the Mediterranean have announced easing of corona measures in recent weeks and the vaccination rate continues to increase is making the airport very positive. For this reason, one can even have legitimate hopes of better passenger numbers than in autumn 2019, Papst continued. At that time, the airport welcomed a total of 55.000 passengers in the same period.

ANA suspends plastic use at airports

In order to become completely waste-free by 2050, the Japanese market leader will no longer use any plastic at airports, thereby reducing the amount of single-use plastic by around 94 tons per year. The Japanese airline wants to completely stop using plastic and plastic packaging in the future. As part of this, the group has committed to reducing the use of plastics by 2030 percent by the 70 financial year compared to 2019 levels and to completely eliminating the use of plastic packaging by 2050. To achieve these goals, the airline will no longer provide plastic packaging for packing luggage at airports after October 31, 2021. This initiative alone will reduce the amount of plastic wrappers used by almost 2 million packages per year, which corresponds to around 94 tons of plastic, the company said in a press release. As part of the waste initiative, other products on board would be replaced, such as the trays for meals in economy class on international flights with bagasse - this alone would result in around 617 tonnes less waste per year - the cutlery in the cabin with wooden parts, the straws and coffee cup lids on the plane and in the lounges with paper products. In addition, all plastic film used to cover cargo would be collected and recycled.

In the coming weeks, the airports are preparing for a busy influx. Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH is also expecting an increase in travel volumes during the fall holidays. BER is preparing for around 900.000 passengers to be processed by the last day before school starts (October 24, 2021). It will be particularly busy on the holiday weekends, with peaks on Fridays and Sundays. On these two days, the passenger volume will be between 60.000 and 65.000 passengers. With Easyjet, the Lufthansa Group, Eurowings, Air Baltic and Norwegian, several airlines are already offering their passengers this service in full or in part, according to the airport. During the holiday period, 64 airlines fly to 137 destinations in 49 countries. The offer is thus almost 80 percent compared to the same period in 2019.
