VIE starts construction of the largest photovoltaic system in Austria

At 24 hectares, Austria's largest photovoltaic system is being built at Vienna Airport. 55.000 PV panels are expected to deliver an output of around 24 megawatts peak, as the airport emphasized in a press release. With eight PV systems, in which a total of more than 20 million euros have been or will be invested, the airport plans to generate around 30 million kilowatt hours of solar power annually, thus obtaining almost a third of its annual electricity consumption from solar energy. The new facility is scheduled to go into operation in spring 2022. CEO Günther Ofner described the PV offensive as a major step on the way to "becoming one of the first 'green airports' in Europe to operate in a CO2-neutral manner." With photovoltaics, e-mobility and new technologies to improve energy efficiency, VIE is consistently reducing its CO2 emissions, added CEO Julian Jäger. "The greatest opportunity for climate protection, however, lies in synthetic fuels. The technology exists – now we need blending requirements and investments in research and development to promote dissemination and create business models.”

Short-term Vienna-Miami? Austrian Airlines waves it away

In recent days, rumors have emerged that Austrian Airlines could start nonstop flights between Vienna and Miami at short notice. These were also fueled by the fact that sister company Swiss is making reductions from Zurich. The Cape Town route will not be served in the upcoming 2021/2022 winter flight schedule. At least in theory, aircraft would be available for Miami rotations. There is currently high demand for transatlantic traffic due to the impending opening of the US border for vaccinated people. That's the theory. In practice, however, things look completely different, as Austrian Airlines confirmed to Aviation Direct that it has no plans to start a flight connection between Vienna and Miami in the short term. "We cannot confirm that," a company spokeswoman clarified when asked.

MUC recorded over five million passengers in the third quarter

Traffic volumes at Munich Airport continue to increase significantly. The third quarter brought the airport its biggest increase since the start of the pandemic. In total, over 5,1 million passengers were counted in the past three months, more than twice as many as in the same period last year. The highest passenger volume since the start of the pandemic was achieved in September with 1,9 million passengers. This means that the airport recorded almost as many passengers in that month as in the entire first half of 2021. In the first six months, there were a total of 2,2 million travelers. "Traffic volumes in Munich are now back at a significantly higher level than last year. All signals point to a further recovery in air traffic. Munich Airport is well on the way to further consolidating its role as a European premium hub," said Jost Lammers, CEO of Flughafen München GmbH (FMG). The fact that Munich is being used more and more as a hub is also clear from a look at the number of transfer passengers: while their share of the total passenger volume was only 21 percent in May, it has recently risen to 38 percent. The opening of the USA, announced for November, will provide a further boost for hub traffic. Lufthansa will increase its existing routes to New York to ten weekly connections and Los Angeles to seven weekly flights. There will also be further long-haul connections to North American destinations: from November, Miami, Mexico City and Montreal will be served, and Vancouver will also be served for the first time in the winter flight schedule period. Despite the very dynamic traffic development, the current

Vienna: Instead of an Iran Air flight to Tehran, there were overnight stays in the A300

Last Saturday, 170 people wanted to fly from Vienna to Tehran on an Iran Air Airbus A300. But the journey was chaotic even on the apron and on top of that the passengers even had to spend the night on the plane. The plane was actually supposed to take off for the capital of Iran at around 11:50 a.m., but this was not possible for technical reasons. The captain cancelled the flight for safety reasons. According to a media report in the free newspaper Heute, which refers to a passenger, the travelers had already been on board the jet for two hours by this time. Iran Air flew in a replacement plane, but it did not arrive until midnight the following day. But the odyssey did not end there, because the passengers on this plane also had to wait around two hours. The crew allegedly explained that they were waiting for takeoff clearance. This soon turned out to be a delaying tactic, because then the cat was let out of the bag: the plane was not ready for takeoff and help could not arrive before 0:30 a.m. The passengers were specifically told that de-icing was necessary. However, due to the time of year, this was not immediately available and had to be set up by Vienna Airport. According to the media report, the passengers were not able to leave the Airbus. The airport and Iran Air are passing the buck to each other. Iran Air claims that the airport did not provide any buses. A spokesman for Austria's largest airport does not want to accept this.

India: Government also wants to sell Alliance Air

The Indian government is also planning to sell the regional airline Alliance Air. The operator of a total of 18 ATR72-600s is primarily active domestically and operates many subsidized routes. It took many years, but now it's a done deal: Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express are being sold to Tata Sons. The government is now turning its attention to the state-owned Alliance Air, which maintains a dense regional network. According to local media reports, the board will meet on Thursday to discuss the government's request. India is therefore planning to sell the regional carrier completely. The project is still at an early stage, so no interested parties have yet come forward publicly. However, it is expected that the Indian government will invite bids for Alliance Air this year. Alliance Air was founded in 1996 and has nothing to do with the Australian Alliance Airlines. The fleet currently consists of 18 ATR72-600 turboprop aircraft. These are stationed at various secondary and tertiary airports, but also in Delhi and Hyderabad. A dense regional network is maintained, with many routes being PSO-subsidized.

In the upcoming 2021/22 winter flight schedule, Austrian Airlines will not fly between Vienna and Cape Town. The carrier confirmed to Aviation Direct that the seasonal route will be suspended this year. "Due to the still volatile entry conditions to and from South Africa, we have decided to suspend the Vienna-Cape Town-Vienna rotation in this year's winter flight schedule," said a spokeswoman for Austrian Airlines. In terms of warm water destinations, the Austrian Lufthansa subsidiary wants to focus on the destinations Cancun, Malé and Mauritius this year. According to company information, sales are going well: “We are already pleased with the very good bookings received, which is why we have already increased the offer significantly during the Christmas holidays (CUN: 10 instead of 7 round trips between 19DEC and 09JAN, MLE 15 instead of 10 round trips between 17DEC and 09JAN, MRU 13 instead of 10 round trips between 17DEC and 09JAN),” said the AUA media officer.

Air New Zealand invites you to vaccinate in a Dreamliner

Vaccinations on the bus, on the tram, at the swimming pool, at a child's birthday party or in the supermarket next to the deposit return - all already known and no longer news. On Saturday, Air New Zealand will make it possible to get the Covid-19 shot in a Dreamliner. With this very creative idea, the carrier is trying to boost the willingness to be vaccinated in New Zealand. The aim is to make the decision easier for aviation enthusiasts in particular. The campaign will take place at Auckland Airport on Saturday, October 16, 2021. "People will board through the door in Business Premier, where they will receive a dose of the Pfizer vaccine in their arm of choice. Vaccines will be administered by Tāmaki Health. They will then move through the cabin to Economy Class, where a snack service will begin while they wait to disembark after the observation period," reads a statement. It is currently planned that this will be a one-off campaign. But who knows: Maybe there will be a repeat because of its great success?
