Despite Corona: Many delayed and canceled flights

This year, around 20 million passengers are said to have been affected by flight irregularities. According to statistics from Airhelp, the airports in Brussels, Paris-CDG, Eindhoven and Düsseldorf were particularly unpunctual. The latter airport is said to have come fourth on the negative list. According to Airhelp, around 490.000 passengers are said to have been affected. In 2019, the proportion of "problem flights" is said to have been higher, but the number of passengers was also considerably higher. The causes of the delays are extremely varied. However, these are mostly home-made by airlines and their service providers as well as airports. There is certainly a shortage of staff at many airports, but also at the airlines. In the wake of Corona, too many employees were laid off or many reoriented themselves in other industries due to short-time work. Berlin-Brandenburg Airport has recently come into public attention because, although only a few passengers use the airport compared to the "before Corona" period, there have been repeated long waiting times and chaotic conditions. But even smaller airports like Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden have already made headlines this year because the regional council did not ensure that there were enough staff at the security checkpoint. The result: only one line was open and many travelers missed their flights. According to Airhelp, things went much better in Ireland and the United Kingdom, for example. The proportion of problem flights in these two countries has so far been between four and six percent. This could also be due to the fact that Ireland and the UK opened up to international travel relatively late.

Volcanic eruptions: A3M with a world map of global activities over the past five years

The media coverage of the volcanic eruption on Palma has now been used by A3M, a company from Tübingen that specializes in early crisis warning, as an opportunity to graphically depict global volcanic activity over the past five years. The earth is in motion: in addition to the volcano on the Canary Island of La Palma, which has been spewing lava for weeks, Aso in Japan has also recently become active. Both volcanoes clearly show that the planet is still changing geologically. This map shows where the main areas of seismic volcanic activity are. It is primarily the countries bordering the so-called "Ring of Fire" around the Pacific Ocean where volcanoes keep the population on tenterhooks. The risk of earthquakes and tsunamis is also significantly increased there. The countries include New Zealand and Alaska, as well as nations in Central and South America, and also parts of Asia such as Indonesia. Active volcanoes are rather unusual for Europe and Africa.

Air forces exercised in the Mur and Ennstal valleys

From October 19 to 21, the Air Surveillance Command conducted the "Caveman Allegory 21" exercise with other air force units. The aim of the exercise was to ensure the interaction of forces and resources from all areas - from ground-based air defense to deployed radar systems and flying elements. While the tactical flight maneuvers took place primarily in the Mur and Ennstal valleys, work was already underway on the next exercise scenario at the air bases in Hörsching, Aigen im Ennstal and Zeltweg. "Soldiers must master their craft, in all situations and day and night. To do this, they need to practice. This exercise also showed that our soldiers are professionals and, what's more, they are innovative and motivated," said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner. A total of around 200 personnel on the ground and in the air took part in the exercise. Up to 15 aircraft, from the Eurofighter to the Pilatus PC-7, Pilatus PC-6 and Diamond DA 40 NG fixed-wing aircraft, to the S-70 “Black Hawk” and Agusta Bell 212 helicopters, were used to achieve the exercise objective.

Madagascar opens up to European tourists

From November 6, 2021, Madagascar plans to welcome tourists from Europe again. To this end, the borders will be at least partially opened. Initially, this will affect scheduled flights from Air Madagascar and Air France, among others. In addition, some charters from Milan will be reactivated. In regional traffic, Madagascar will open up as early as October 23, 2021. Air traffic is to be gradually resumed. Europeans will be allowed to enter the country again for tourist purposes from November 6, 2021. The current plans stipulate that all passengers - regardless of vaccination status - must undergo a paid PCR test upon arrival in Madagascar. Until the result is available, you are quarantined and are not allowed to leave the hotel. If the test is negative, you can move around the country completely freely. If it is positive, you will be quarantined for at least 14 days. Currently, the plan is for airlines to collect the approximately 25 euros for the PCR test with the ticket price and pass it on to the authorities. In the early days, however, this may not have been implemented, meaning that the costs for the test will have to be borne on site. Madagascar is initially limiting the number of flights to one connection per five hours and airport. This is to prevent long queues and at the same time to improve the capacity of the laboratories.

Nice Places: Chilling with the dolphins in Eilat

The southernmost city in Israel has an extremely interesting place, the Dolphin Reef, which is ideal for both swimming and watching the marine mammals. It is expressly not a "dolphin show" because the animals live in the bay and the animals do not have to perform controversial shows and tricks. The approach of the Dolphin Reef is that you can experience dolphins in their natural environment. In concrete terms, this means that the animals can be observed, but they are not forced to do anything. If a dolphin shows a trick or swims curiously to the jetty, it does it voluntarily and if it doesn't want to anymore, it just keeps swimming. Touching the marine mammals is not allowed and there is a good reason for that. Dolphins are not cuddly toys, but highly intelligent predators. It can happen that a dolphin seeks proximity, but only when it wants to. However, if people seek proximity and ignore the marine mammals' clear rejection, dolphins can react aggressively and underline their position with an attack. This is especially true for female animals raising a baby. But what makes the Dolphin Reef in Eilat such a unique place? The dolphins are of course the big eye-catchers and invite you to watch them for hours. At some point you will also notice that the dolphins also have their eyes on the people and with a little luck at least one animal will "burst" with curiosity and swim over to take a closer look at the people on the jetty. With a little more luck the animal will interact with the

Award: Air Nostrum wins Andorra tender

The Spanish airline Air Nostrum was awarded the contract to operate a subsidized route between Andorra - La Seu d'Urgell and Madrid. The government of Andorra had previously put this out to tender. The small European country does not have its own airport on its territory. Andorra - La Seu d'Urgell Airport is located in Spain. In order to improve connectivity, airlines were lured with subsidies as part of a tender. There have recently been no regular scheduled flights. Air Nostrum will initially fly twice a week on the subsidized route from December 17, 2021. It is planned that ATR72-600 turboprop aircraft will be used. The route will be served from Madrid, where Air Nostrum maintains a large base.

Flashmob: Alitalia flight attendants stripped down to their underwear

Flight attendants who lost their jobs during the transition from Alitalia to ITA Airways held a flash mob in Rome on Wednesday. The ladies took off their uniforms and shouted "we are Alitalia" in Italian while holding hands. On October 15, 2021, the successor, ITA Airways, began flight operations. Many Alitalia employees were not taken on and lost their jobs. Although the new company briefly acquired the trademark rights, it cannot consider itself the official successor to Alitalia. This is a requirement of the EU Commission. Unions criticize the fact that only around 3.000 Alitalia employees have found a new job at ITA Airways. The wage conditions are also said to be significantly lower than those paid by the predecessor. Some flight attendants have now organized a flash mob in Rome in which they symbolically took off everything except their underwear.
