ADV: Air transport demand remains stable

Airport Association ADV calls for digitization and standardization of evidence

The airport association is calling for standardized regulations for international travel. This is the only way to make travel easier. Despite all the joy about the USA opening up in the coming days, ADV General Manager Ralph Beisel is calling for globally uniform entry regulations to finally be established. The current patchwork of entry regulations both within the European Union and beyond would slow down the long-awaited recovery. "Ultimately, a fully digitized global standard for checking health status will be essential so that airports and airlines can cope with the gradually increasing volume of passengers. Digitized evidence enables a return to online check-in for international flights. In addition, additional digitization options and biometric procedures offer a perspective for speeding up security and border controls. Checking a passenger's health status via the digital travel pass or other apps is the right thing to do and saves time," explains Beisel. Revival of the US market crucial for economically affected industry Airlines, private service providers, authorities and airports are still struggling with the economic impact of the corona pandemic - even if reports of full terminals give a different impression. The situation is and remains tense. Compared to 2019, passenger volume in week 42 is 54,9 percent. In other words, every second passenger is still missing compared to the pre-coronavirus level. This means that airport revenues are currently half of the pre-crisis level. German airports suffered pre-tax losses of 2020 billion euros in 2,1 (after a profit of 800 million euros in 2019). For the current year 2021, the airport association ADV is forecasting a loss of 1,5 billion euros for all German airports. Airlines, service providers and

Peter Kolba: “Agree on the right of withdrawal free of charge in writing”

In recent days, the number of new corona cases in Europe has risen sharply in some cases. Peter Kolba's consumer protection association warns that free cancellations are not always easy due to the general pandemic situation. "Anyone who books trips and hotels in the middle of a pandemic must know that a free cancellation due to a dangerous Covid-19 situation on site can be highly controversial. The consumer protection association therefore advises that you definitely agree on such a free cancellation option when booking," says Peter Kolba, chairman of the consumer protection association (VSV). "In February-March 2020, for example, hoteliers in Ischgl still demanded full payment for the stay from guests who wanted to leave earlier." The consumer advocate points out, among other things, that if you cannot go on a trip due to a Covid-19 infection, this falls under the "risk in your own sphere". If you do not have appropriate travel cancellation insurance, you usually have to pay the cancellation fee. Kolba assumes that this is usually covered by appropriate travel cancellation insurance. Nevertheless, you should clarify before signing whether Covid-19 infections are insured, because this is still not the case with all providers. However, if the risk of contracting Covid-19 is high on site and there may be corresponding travel warnings, then that would be a reason for a free withdrawal from the contract, says Kolba. "But there is a catch: If the situation was foreseeable - and we fear that the courts would see it that way - then there is no loss of the basis of the transaction and no free withdrawal." The VSV chairman's recommendation is: "We recommend

Aer Lingus brings long haul back to Shannon

For a long time it was unclear whether Aer Lingus would again offer long-haul flights from Shannon. The UK branch in Manchester was actually supposed to replace this base, but now a different decision has been made and 16 transatlantic destinations from the Irish city have been announced. The majority of the aircraft to be used are Airbus A321neoLR. The "comeback" flight has been announced for March 10, 2022. This will fly to Boston as EI 135. The long-haul network from Shannon will be gradually ramped up. The current plan is to reactivate the destinations New York JFK, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, Philadelphia, Seattle and Toronto in the first step. "This is an ambitious schedule for summer 2022 and an important step for the airline and the country as we reconnect Ireland with the world. “We know from our customer research that Irish people are keen to fly again and we are certainly looking forward to welcoming them back on board,” explains Reid Moody, Chief Strategy and Planning Officer at Aer Lingus.

Autumn break: Nuremberg Airport expects 55.000 passengers

After Nuremberg Airport recorded a strong increase in passengers during the summer holidays, the airport is also expecting a correspondingly high demand for the Bavarian autumn holidays. During the week-long holidays, around 55.000 passengers are expected with 500 take-offs and landings. Since there were no school holidays last autumn, no comparison is possible. The busiest travel day is expected to be Friday, October 29, with almost 6.500 passengers. Turkey is at the top of the passengers' favour with up to 17.500 passengers, followed by Mallorca. City breaks are also back in fashion: the most popular metropolises are Paris, London and Palermo. New to the list: Bologna in Italy with Ryanair.

Comeback: Easyjet reactivates Berlin-Cologne / Bonn

In the aftermath of the Air Berlin bankruptcy, Easyjet took over many routes from Berlin-Tegel. In order to be able to keep the slots, they also used wet lease equipment, for example from Smartlynx and WDL. Now there is a comeback in domestic German traffic from BER. The Corona pandemic led to the flights operated by Easyjet Europe within Germany - with the exception of Berlin-Sylt - being suspended indefinitely. Previously, for example, Berlin (Tegel)-Stuttgart and Berlin (Tegel)-Cologne/Bonn were on offer. At BER, they had not yet dared to fly domestically again - with the exception of Sylt. That is set to change on December 1, 2021, when the orange budget airline's Airbus jets will fly up to twice between Berlin (BER) and Cologne/Bonn again. Currently, 12 rotations per week are planned. The carrier will probably monitor demand very closely, as it has not yet been decided whether the other domestic German routes, such as Berlin-Stuttgart, will be reactivated.

Paris-Orly: Aer Lingus helps Vueling with Airbus A330

The IAG low-cost subsidiary Vueling is one of the indirect beneficiaries of the state aid granted to the Air France-KLM group. It was able to obtain numerous slots at Paris-Orly airport, which now have to be flown. In addition, there are those inherited from the dissolved sister company OpenSkies ("Level France"). The result: Vueling is carrying out a large-scale expansion at the airport close to the city in the French capital. The offer is being increased to almost 50 destinations. According to the company, demand is very high. So high that the company is getting an Airbus A330 from its sister company Aer Lingus to help. When asked, the IAG member confirmed a corresponding media report by Aviacioline. The Airbus A321ceo aircraft will be used in its own operations primarily from Orly. Vueling confirmed that it will gradually switch to A321neos. These are new aircraft that will be purchased from the manufacturer Airbus. In order to meet the current high demand, an Airbus A330 operated by Aer Lingus will temporarily fly for Vueling from Orly under an ACMI contract.
