In the 2021/22 winter flight schedule period, Vienna-Schwechat Airport will once again offer almost 90 percent of the destinations it had “before Corona”. The airlines are also daring to add some new flights, including Aqaba and Banja Luka. In addition to new destinations and increased frequencies, some airlines are also once again offering connections that were suspended due to the Corona pandemic: Austrian Airlines is now adding Cancún in Mexico and, with Malé in the Maldives and Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, is offering three sunny long-haul destinations to escape the cold season. Wizz Air and Ryanair are expanding their route network from Vienna by a total of 13 destinations. Aegean, Air Cairo, Corendon Airlines, Jet2, Pegasus Airlines, Sunexpress, Transavia France and Volotea have connections back to Vienna. Toronto with Air Canada, Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines, Abu Dhabi with Etihad and Jeddah with Saudia can also be reached from Vienna in winter. With 150 destinations in the 2021 winter flight schedule, Vienna Airport already covers almost 90 percent of the pre-crisis offer (172 in 2019). Austria: New entry requirements from November 1, 2021

With effect from November 1, 2021, Austria's Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) is modifying the entry regulations. The previous regulation would have expired on October 31, 2021 due to the passage of time. The new rules apply until December 31, 2021. The content of the regulation has only been changed minimally, but brings decisive relief for holidaymakers in Cyprus. Paragraph 5a of the Covid entry regulation will be deleted without replacement. This means that the mandatory presentation of a negative PCR result or the carrying out of such a test within 24 hours of entry will no longer be required. Cyprus was the last place of origin to be subject to this rule introduced in summer 2021. What remains unchanged is that the 3G proof remains the core of the entry regulations. It is still possible for unvaccinated people to have the necessary test carried out within one day of their arrival in Austria. The basic division of the world into "states and areas with low epidemiological risk", "virus variant areas and states" and virtually "all others" will be retained. This also applies to the rules for entry, which are to be controlled at the borders by the Federal Army on behalf of the respective district health authority. Significant changes to the classification are as follows: Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Moldova will be removed from the "green list". In return, the Ministry of Health now considers Kuwait and Rwanda to be states with low epidemiological risk. Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica and Suriname will be removed from the "red list". There are no new entries in the list of virus variant areas, so there are no longer any red-listed states. This results in the following "green list" with effect from November 1, 2021: Andorra

Nice Places: Blue Lagoon, Crystal Lagoon and Santa Maria Bay - Comino

The smallest of the three inhabited islands of the Republic of Malta, Comino, is particularly known for the Blue Lagoon. This attracts thousands of tourists every year. Crystal-clear water invites you to swim, but a visit should not only be well planned, but you should also consider going to Santa Maria Bay. The Blue Lagoon does not have a real sandy beach, but is a rocky affair. There is only a small sandy area near the jetty. Nevertheless, in the high season countless tourists are brought here on regular scheduled boats and excursion ships. Local business people offer pretty much everything from mineral water to hot dogs to diving goggles, and at hefty prices. In July and August in particular, the Blue Lagoon is completely overcrowded and tourists are literally standing on each other's toes. The beauty of this picturesque place can therefore only really be experienced in the low season, because then the "offer" of stalls is limited to a lifeguard and a small first aid station. In concrete terms, this means that the "market", which does not fit into the landscape at all, is not set up outside of peak times. You can expect a sandy beach in at least one place on the mini-island of Cominotto. It is also very nice for swimming here, but there is a catch. Getting there is complicated because you have to swim from the opposite side of Comino. For environmental reasons, no boats are allowed in Cominotto. So you often see holidaymakers carrying their beach equipment through the bay on an air mattress. Crystal clear water in the Crystal Lagoon

Stuttgart is to become a hub for electric aircraft

Lilium intends to set up a hub for the planned southern Germany network at Stuttgart-Echterdingen Airport. Among other things, it is planned that Munich and Nuremberg should be served by electric aircraft. Stuttgart will thus join the southern German network consisting of Munich and Nuremberg airports, which had already announced their cooperation. The Munich-based aviation company Lilium, which positions itself as a global technology leader for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, has already earmarked part of the planned production of its 7-seater Lilium jet for the southern German network. Last year, Cologne-Bonn and Düsseldorf airports and a planned network of 14 locations in Florida (USA) announced a planned start of operations from 2024. Lilium has also announced a strategic alliance with the leading Brazilian airline Azul for the development of a regional network with the Lilium Jet in Brazil from 2025. “We want people in our region to get to their near and far destinations in the best possible way and to have a wide choice of transport options. That is why we are developing Stuttgart Airport into a unique hub for sustainable and innovative forms of mobility. The regional and national high-speed connections with small electric aircraft, as planned by Lilium, are a promising addition to the Stuttgart location," explains airport director Arina Freitag. The Lilium Jet has space for six passengers and a pilot. With a planned maximum range of 250 km and a cruising speed of 280 km/h, the Lilium Jet has the potential to become the market leader for passenger and freight transport. The Lilium Jet has been in development for several years and is involved in corresponding certification projects with the EASA and the FAA.

Horizon Air plans to convert the Dash 8-400 to hydrogen propulsion

Production of the de Havilland Dash 8-400 is currently suspended, but this model could potentially play a major role in terms of alternative propulsion systems. Zeroavia and the Alaksa Air Group want to convert the turboprop aircraft to hydrogen-electric operation. The group has firmly ordered at least one aircraft. At the same time, 50 options for the so-called ZA2000 kit were secured. Within the Alaska Air Group, the Dash operation is located at Horizon Air. The Dash fleet currently consists of 32 aircraft. If all options for the retrofit were exercised, the fleet would grow. The range of the "hydrogen Dash" is to be around 500 nautical miles. The capacity is given as 76 seats. The propulsion is to be provided by electric motors, which have yet to be developed. The necessary electricity is provided by hydrogen. This is a rather long-term project.

“New Flybe” starts with new boss

The "new Flybe" will be launched with Dave Pflieger at the helm. The manager was introduced this week as the new CEO of the regional airline. Initially, the company plans to fly within the United Kingdom and at the same time fly to selected EU destinations. Cyrus Capital had bought some assets from the bankruptcy estate of the "old Flybe" and transferred them to the newly founded company Thyme Opco. The latter company was renamed Flybe Limited. According to a statement from the company, the company is ready for the first flight. The first aircraft has already been repainted in the design of the "new Flybe". The project had stalled for a time because the British Civil Aviation Authority had cancelled the operating license of the "old Flybe". However, this included coveted take-off and landing rights, including at London Heathrow and London City. These have been lost, so the "new Flybe" had to apply for slots.

Climate ticket: ÖBB evaluate integration of Vienna Airport Lines

The Vienna Airport Lines, operated by the ÖBB subsidiary Österreichische Postbus AG, are not currently included in the new climate ticket. However, this could change, a spokesman for the Austrian Federal Railways told Aviation Direct. Even before the introduction of the climate ticket, the post buses that run between the federal capital and Vienna-Schwechat Airport under the Vienna Airport Lines brand were not integrated into the Eastern Region transport association. A spokesman for the parent company emphasized to Aviation Direct: "The Vienna Airport Lines are a self-financing service that is independent of associations and public donors." Currently, the VAL, along with the City Airport Train, which has been on a "corona break" for some time, are not included in the climate ticket. There could be changes with regard to the airport buses, because: "Including the Vienna Airport Lines in the climate ticket is still being evaluated," said a spokesman for the Austrian Federal Railways. Regarding the current validity, the media officer said: "With the climate ticket, in addition to trains and trams, almost all buses in the area of the respective transport association can be used. However, tickets for Vienna Airport Lines are excluded from this."

Air France will continue hop until at least 2026

The Air France subsidiary Hop, which recently faced an uncertain future, is to continue operating until at least March 2026. An agreement was reached with the unions, which will primarily result in a reduction in the cost per flight hour. Hop was created in 2013 from the merger of the former Air France regional subsidiaries and initially operated under its own brand. The aim was to market the regional flights as a kind of mixture of a low-cost airline and a regional airline. The concept was not crowned with success, so the company switched to ACMI services for the parent company. The Hop fleet has been gradually reduced in recent years because there was no replacement for the turboprop aircraft that were being retired. Staff were also cut, which led to various disputes with the unions. The future of this Air France subsidiary has recently been called into question, because the company wants to concentrate primarily on the Transavia and Air France brands. In lengthy negotiations, employee representatives and the management of the parent company were able to reach a compromise. Hop will continue until at least 2026 and will receive a purchase guarantee for the flight services from Air France. At the same time, the employees are making concessions so that the costs per flight hour are reduced.
