Vienna: Overnight stays in October again below the pre-crisis level

From May to October, Austrian tourism recorded a significant increase in overnight stays compared to the pandemic year 2020 (+22 percent), but still a considerable decline compared to the record summer of 2019 (-17 percent). After a very high occupancy rate in August and September, according to the forecast of the Austrian National Bank (OeNB), there was a decline in overnight stays in October (-14 percent) compared to 2019. The current sharp increase in new Covid-19 infections in Austria, but also in large parts of Europe, represents a significant downside risk for the coming months and thus the start of the winter season. In November and the Advent period, however, the hotel industry is traditionally only at below-average capacity, and the main season for winter tourism starts with Christmas. "If additional and comprehensive restrictions are necessary at the end of December or travel warnings are in place, this would imply considerable losses for Austrian tourism," the press release states.

In October 2021, the Latvian airline carried 240.300 passengers - a whopping 272 percent more than in the same period last year. Linz: Corendon flies to Hurghada and Las Palmas

In the current 2021/22 winter flight schedule period, the Maltese Corendon Europe is offering non-stop flights to Hurghada and Gran Canaria from Linz in Upper Austria. The aircraft used are Boeing 737 medium-haul jets. The Egyptian city is served on Sundays. Flights to Las Palmas are on Saturdays. Other destinations offered from Linz are Frankfurt am Main and Düsseldorf. The latter city in Germany is served by Eurowings five times a week with Airbus A319s. The connection to the largest Lufthansa hub, Frankfurt am Main, is scheduled up to twice a day and is operated by the Italian Kranich subsidiary Air Dolomiti. In direct comparison with the 2020/21 winter flight schedule, there are significantly more passenger flights from Linz-Hörsching. The corona pandemic hit the passenger segment of this airport particularly hard, as there were no scheduled flights at all for a very long period of time. Düsseldorf (Eurowings) and Frankfurt am Main (Air Dolomiti) are now being served again. With Corendon Europe (Hurghada and Gran Canaria) there are two warm water destinations this year that did not exist in the same period last year.

Sun Express flies from Dortmund to Zonguldak

Zonguldak is returning to Dortmund Airport's flight schedule: In the coming 2022 summer season, Sun Express will fly from Dortmund to the Turkish Black Sea coast. From June 30, Zonguldak will be the German-Turkish airline's third destination from Dortmund, alongside Izmir and Antalya - every Thursday the city on the Black Sea will be directly connected to Dortmund. The airline recently announced the resumption of flights to Antalya, and from April 10, the Turkish Riviera will be served four times a week from the Ruhr area airport. Sun Express is also increasing the frequency of connections to Izmir. In the 2022 summer season, flights will no longer take place once, but three times a week. "Two new destinations, higher frequencies - that is a strong signal for the return of growth at Dortmund Airport. SunExpress flies to a sun-drenched coastal town that has historically been closely linked to the Ruhr region and whose connection many people in the region have wanted," says Guido Miletic, Head of Airport Services and Marketing at Dortmund Airport, commenting on the new route. Zonguldak was last part of Dortmund Airport's flight schedule in the 2017 summer season and was served by Germania at the time.

SZG: With Eurowings for vaccination on the plane

Get vaccinated on the plane? In the state of Salzburg, this is made possible by a cooperation between the airport, the state of Salzburg, the Red Cross and Eurowings. Where passengers normally start their vacation relaxed, or fly to their business appointment in the shortest possible time, on November 9th, doctors and representatives of the Red Cross are trying to vaccinate as many people as possible. Just like on vacation - simply check in at the check-in for the "jab in flight" (your data is recorded by Red Cross employees), go through a special counter at the security checks to the gate and then it's just a few steps into the Eurowings plane. There are enough seats for waiting "vaccination passengers" both before and after the jab - a look into the cockpit included, because Captain Bernhard Dallner and his crew are also concerned about the well-being of the guests on board. After the "safe vaccination landing", everyone who has just been vaccinated returns to the check-in hall via the same route. "We are happy to support any initiative by the state of Salzburg when it comes to immunizing our population against Corona. Especially with the increasing air traffic in Europe, the possibility of borderless travel is an important signal for all people, business groups and industry. In the future, the COVID-19 vaccination will also be an indispensable part of this borderless freedom of travel," says Bettina Ganghofer, Managing Director of Salzburg Airport.

Apeleon carried out the first flight tests

The Austrian company Volare GmbH carried out successful tests with its Apeleon prototype. In a multi-stage test program, the flight characteristics of the aircraft were evaluated and important findings were collected for the next phase, prototype development. "Flight testing is an important part of aircraft development in order to validate mathematical models and ultimately the novel concept. The tests show which screws we still have to turn in the future," says Managing Director Andreas Fürlinger. The demonstrator is operated like a drone as an RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System), i.e. by a pilot from the ground, within line of sight. This requires an operating license from the Austrian aviation authority Austro Control. After intensive cooperation, Apeleon received flight test approval from Austro Control for its demonstrator in the "Specific" category for UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems). This required a so-called SORA - Specific Operations Risk Assessment. This is a multi-stage, standardized risk analysis procedure for the use of civil drones to ensure that the drone flight can be carried out without endangering or disturbing uninvolved third parties. "The entire drone sector is currently undergoing incredibly dynamic development. Innovative ideas and new technological possibilities are opening up ever more diverse areas of application. As an aviation authority, Austro Control supports young companies such as Apeleon when it comes to enabling the testing of new technical solutions in a safe environment," says Valerie Hackl, Managing Director of Austro Control. The next phase is prototype development. In the next few years, the aircraft will be developed and built in its original size and will serve as the basis for aircraft approval and series production. Fürlinger emphasizes: "It is important to also explore innovative and future-oriented topics in Austria.

With the non-stop flights, the Canary Islands are once again easily accessible for all guests from the four-country region.
