Michael O'Leary on lockdowns: "Media puts pressure on politics"

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary is concerned about the new lockdown in Austria, because he fears that it will once again have a negative impact on demand. He also criticises the fact that the media is putting increasing pressure on politicians over the Corona issue. During an online conference held by Eurocontrol, the manager said that the recovery of European aviation had been "disrupted" by the lockdown in Austria and the partial lockdown in the Netherlands. In Germany in particular, he sees potential customers getting nervous. This is spilling over to the whole of Europe: "Europe is getting very nervous". The Christmas season is generally considered to be a particularly busy time for travel. Michael O'Leary is concerned that this year it could be particularly complicated or even fall through, because he fears that new travel restrictions could be imposed very soon. Many potential holidaymakers and customers of airlines are apparently also concerned, because booking figures have taken a hit in many markets, especially in Austria, for almost all providers. But Michael O'Leary also believes that governments are allowing themselves to be pressured by media reports and are panicking. He appeals to everyone to keep a cool head and act carefully and purposefully. O'Leary also said that Covid vaccinations would enable safe travel. Unsurprisingly, the Ryanair boss is against new, tough travel restrictions.

Entry into Bulgaria: Vaccinated and convalescent people also need negative PCR results

Since the beginning of this week, Bulgaria has required vaccinated and recovered people to present a negative PCR test result that is no older than 72 hours in order to be able to enter the country without quarantine. People with EU citizenship or a Bulgarian residence permit can also take the test on site within 24 hours. If you decide to take the test in Bulgaria, however, you must remember that you will first have to undergo a ten-day quarantine, which ends immediately if the result is negative. If you bring a negative result from abroad, you will not be required to isolate yourself. It should be noted that Bulgaria now explicitly requires vaccinated and recovered people to present a negative PCR test that must not be older than 72 hours from the time the swab was taken. There are exceptions for children under 12 years of age, who do not need any proof. Truck and bus drivers are also relieved. Bulgaria is one of the first EU countries to no longer make it easier for vaccinated and recovered people to enter the country, but to insist on an additional PCR test. So far, only Malta has particularly strict entry rules, because - apart from the Dark Red Zone - only fully vaccinated people are allowed to enter without quarantine. If this cannot be fulfilled or if you come from a country that is listed in dark red, you must undergo a hotel quarantine for a fee.

Cargo: MNG Airlines flies from Cologne to New York

The Turkish cargo airline MNG Airlines will now fly three times a week from Cologne/Bonn to New York-JFK. Airbus A330-300P2F aircraft are usually used. This is a stopover on the existing cargo route from Istanbul to the USA. MNG Airlines' fleet consists of a total of nine aircraft. These are seven Airbus A300-600RFs, one A330-200F and one A300-300P2F. A second unit of the latter aircraft type is to be added to the fleet in August 2022. The carrier currently flies six times a week between Istanbul and New York-JFK. A stopover at the German Cologne/Bonn airport will now be made on three rotations. "We are very pleased to be strengthening our flight program in Europe and expanding it to New York JFK. We have high expectations for the future of MNG Airlines with this new A330-300 P2F," explains company boss Sedat Ozkazanc. Cologne Airport Director Johan Vanneste adds: "We are delighted that our long-standing cargo airline partner MNG Airlines is significantly expanding its presence at CGN. German and BeNeLux exporters in particular will benefit from the new JFK flights."
