FRA: The positive passenger development continues

Frankfurt Airport was able to significantly increase passenger volume in November: around 2,9 million people flew via FRA. Compared to the very weak comparable month of the previous year, this corresponded to an increase of 341,5 percent. The continued demand for travel within Europe and the opening of the borders of the United States are continuing to pull the airport out of the crisis, with almost three million people being processed. Compared to the pre-pandemic month of November 2019, however, there was a decrease of 43 percent, according to the airport. Overall, passenger volume in Frankfurt up to November this year was around 22,1 million, an increase of 23,6 percent compared to the same period in 2020 and a decrease of 66,4 percent compared to 2019. Cargo volume recorded a slight decline of 1,2 percent to 192.298 tons for the first time this year (plus 3,0 percent compared to November 2019). The number of flight movements, however, rose by 125,6 percent to 28.882 takeoffs and landings. The total maximum takeoff weight increased by 72,9 percent to around 1,8 million tons (each compared to November 2020). There are signs of weaker passenger development for December due to the rising corona incidence rates and the associated travel restrictions.

Morocco extends international landing ban

After a new CoV variant raged around, the African country suspended international air traffic and imposed a landing ban on incoming passenger flights. This ban was initially limited to two weeks - now the suspension of flights is being extended until the end of the year. Accordingly, all international flight connections will remain suspended until December 31 of this year. According to the actual timetable, this drastic measure to combat the CoV pandemic was supposed to expire today and thus make travel to the country possible again. But that is not going to happen now. It cannot even be ruled out that the international flight ban would have to be extended again beyond the end of the year, as the travel portal Reisetopia reports. And such extensions of the Covid-19 measures are not at all unusual. These uncertainties are likely to cause demand to melt away for the foreseeable future.

Stuttgart Airport: Night bus N8 goes to the airport

From today, the SSB night bus N8 will travel directly to the airport early in the morning. This will make it easier to reach early departures. The line starts daily at 3.40 a.m. from Schlossplatz and arrives at the Stuttgart Airport bus terminal at 4.24 a.m. via Weinsteige, Degerloch and Plieningen. From there it is only a few steps into the terminal building. This means that passengers who want to catch the first flights early in the morning have another option to choose from. The night bus N8 arrives at the airport 35 minutes earlier than the first S3 S-Bahn from Backnang, which reaches the STR via the main station at 04.57 a.m. The extension of the night bus line is initially limited to one year, the airport has informed. The project is intended to test how the additional service is received by passengers.

Eurowings is bringing two Air-Baltic-A220 to Stuttgart

The Latvian airline Air Baltic will be flying from Stuttgart on behalf of Eurowings from Tuesday. Two Airbus A220-300s will be stationed at Baden-Württemberg's largest airport for the wet lease contract. The flights will be operated under the flight numbers of the Lufthansa subsidiary. According to a report by Airliners.de, the Latvian state carrier's medium-haul jets will be used to Vienna, Milan-Malpensa and Hamburg, among others. A Eurowings spokesperson confirmed the media report. In addition, the airline is said to be in negotiations with other airlines about wet lease services. This means that Air Baltic has - at least for the time being - outdone its competitor Helvetic Airways. This year there were already rumors that Helvetic could fly with Embraer jets from Stuttgart for Eurowings. Nothing has come of this yet, but it could happen in summer 2022. At least for the time being, two A220-300s from Air Baltic will be in use for Eurowings from Stuttgart. This wet lease is also viewed critically, as the Lufthansa Group still has a huge number of employees on short-time work. Nor is the entire fleet in use. Evil tongues claim - without naming any sources - that the wet lease of the Latvian jets could be cheaper than operating them themselves. Regardless of this, the Lufthansa Group will most likely take a close look at how the A220-300 "works" in the Eurowings network, as the renewal of the Kranich regional fleet is imminent and it has not yet been decided whether to go for the A220 like Swiss or order the E2 models from Embraer.

ETF Airways immortalizes rabbits on 9A-LAB

The Croatian airline ETF Airways has come up with a funny reaction to the rabbit incident that occurred in Bremen on August 2, 2021. A black rabbit was glued below the captain's window. The Boeing 737-800 with the registration 9A-LAB was damaged at Bremen Airport on August 2, 2021. A rabbit got into engine number 2. The carrier suffered considerable material damage as a result. A German court has to clarify who has to pay for this. According to ETF Airways, Bremen Airport is said to be refusing to reimburse the claimed costs of around one million euros. The Croatian airline is of the opinion that the airport is liable for this and has even searched for hiding places for the animals for evidence purposes and allegedly found other rabbits on the premises. Since, according to ETF Airways, Bremen Airport denies liability, a lawsuit has been filed against the airport. Bremen Airport did not want to comment on the incident in more detail, as the matter is pending before the court. ETF Airways has dedicated a place of honor below the captain's window to the rabbit that died in the incident. This action can also be seen as sarcastic, as during the Second World War it was common practice in many countries for pilots to place the symbols of the enemy aircraft they had shot down below their cockpit window. However, this practice was not followed by all fighter pilots.

Air Nostrum and Cityjet resume merger talks

During the Farnborough Air Show 2018, Air Nostrum and Cityjet announced that the companies were to merge. Since then, the project has been extremely quiet and the Irish carrier had to seek creditor protection due to the corona pandemic. Now things are moving again, as José Manuel Gamir, Chief Financial Officer of Air Nostrum, told El Economista that the merger plan has not fallen asleep. Negotiations are underway again and the merger is a high priority. The corona crisis meant that talks had to be temporarily suspended. Cityjet and Air Nostrum are large ACMI and charter providers. If the merger is successful, the largest European provider in this segment would be created by far.
