18 years after the crash: Former Flash Airlines boss charged in France

The crash of Flash Airlines Flight 7K 604 occurred in 2004. The airline no longer exists, but the then company boss Mohamed Nour and other former managers are now being charged in France. On January 3, 2004, Flash Airlines was scheduled to fly with the SU-ZCF from Sharm el Sheikh via Cairo to Paris. Around three minutes after takeoff, the Boeing 737-300 crashed into the Red Sea for reasons that are still unclear. All crew members and crew were killed. Most of the 148 people were French citizens on their way back from vacation in Egypt. The investigation was originally discontinued, but an appeals court ordered it to be reopened. Among other things, the public prosecutor's office failed to obtain detailed statements from the former managing director of Flash Airlines. The investigation was reopened in September 2019. According to information from the AFP agency, the former Flash Airlines boss, Mohamed Nour, was served with the charges by post on December 16, 2021. Among other things, he is accused of having crew members on board without the required qualifications and/or training. There are also said to have been violations of rest periods. Numerous safety deficiencies were also found during ramp checks in the European Union. However, the exact cause of the accident could never be clarified, so various theories are circulating.

Funding accounts tweaked: Air Europa has to repay 14 million euros

The Spanish airline Air Europa must pay back around 14 million euros in subsidies due to a court decision. The company was accused of deceiving the regional governments into believing that ticket prices on subsidized routes were higher, but charging residents a lower amount. The Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla, among others, subsidize their residents' trips to the mainland. On flights within Spain, the resident number must be given when booking and the flight price is then reduced. The difference is paid by the respective regional governments. And that is precisely where the problem lies: The Spanish Supreme Court found that Air Europa charged residents a much lower price than the price stated to the regional governments for the payment of the difference. The carrier was accused of submitting false invoices with fraudulent intent. The court shared this view and ordered the repayment of 14 million euros. Depending on the region, residents of islands or remote areas such as Ceuta and Melilla receive a subsidy of up to 50 percent on flights to the Spanish mainland. This is intended to ensure that, for example, appointments in the capital can be kept and travel costs remain affordable. In the specific case that the Spanish Supreme Court had to deal with, the period was from January 2009 to September 2010. The decision took longer because the case went through all the courts in Spain.

Because of Omikron: Emirates has to shut down on-board bars again

The onboard bars of Gulf carrier Emirates are among the highlights of the Airbus A380 fleet. Since the beginning of the corona pandemic, however, first or business class passengers have been able to use them less and less. The carrier had to close them again. Shortly after the start of the corona pandemic, Emirates Airline closed the lounges on the upper deck of the A380 fleet on the orders of the authorities of the United Arab Emirates. It was not until October 2020 that permission was granted to reopen them. This is now over - at least for the time being. Emirates Airline is once again not allowed to operate the onboard bars, which are quite popular with passengers. The background to this is the Omicron Corona variant. The company apologized in a statement for the inconvenience caused to passengers by this measure. However, the safety and health of crew and passengers is the top priority. The so-called welcome drinks are also being canceled.

Canada: Air Transat cuts winter flight schedule by 30 percent

The Omicron Corona variant is also having an impact on the 2021/22 winter flight schedule of the Canadian Air Transat. Around a third of all connections are being canceled and taken off sale. The carrier justifies the capacity reduction primarily with Omicron and the current record number of new infections in Canada. This will have an extremely detrimental effect on demand, so that adjustments to the flight schedule will be necessary. For the time being, capacity has been removed up to and including February 25, 2022, but emphasizes that it could also be reduced for the period after that if necessary. Air Transat recently announced that the long-standing codeshare agreement with competitor Westjet is to be extended. Company boss Annick Guérard is pursuing an alliance strategy, further details of which will be communicated in the next few weeks. The competitor originally wanted to take over Air Canada, but the deal fell through due, among other things, to competition law concerns from the EU Commission.

MUC: Winter service is ready

The first snowfalls of the new year have been forecast for this coming weekend. In order to ensure safe flight operations around the clock even under these weather conditions, winter services are on duty at Munich Airport from the beginning of November to mid-April. When there is ice and snow, the winter service column is deployed at the airport. It comprises 181 vehicles, including 66 tractors from the surrounding area. In total, more than 630 men and women are involved in winter services, around 540 of whom come from agriculture and haulage companies in the region. Up to 190 emergency workers per shift ensure that areas within the airport fence are free of snow and ice. This winter, the airport's winter service has already had to be deployed on 22 days, the airport reports. It is not just the airport's traffic areas that have to be kept in a safe condition during the cold season: the aircraft also have to be cleared of snow and ice before take-off. This is done by the so-called "polar bears" of the company for de-icing and aircraft towing at Munich Airport (EFM), a subsidiary of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and Munich Airport GmbH. "Polar bears" are special vehicles that spray de-icing fluid onto the aircraft immediately before take-off. The EFM de-ices up to 15.000 aircraft per year - from Learjets to Airbus A380s. The used de-icing fluid is collected and largely recycled.

Red Sea Hotels in Port Ghalib have to close

The Red Sea Hotels, which belong to the tour operator ETI, will have to do without their three hotels in the Egyptian tourist resort of Port Ghalib near Marsa Alam until further notice. According to a notice on the ETI website, The Palace Port Ghalib, Siva Port Ghalib and Port Ghalib Resort were closed shortly before Christmas. The reason is that the company has not been able to get its hotel license renewed by the Ministry of Tourism at the moment, even though all the necessary documents and certificates were submitted on time and in full. "We are therefore currently unable to offer you a holiday in one of the Red Sea Hotels in Port Ghalib. We deeply regret this situation and are deeply affected by the procedure," said ETI. Holidaymakers who have booked one of the affected hotels have been contacted by the operator and offered an alternative holiday in Hurghada or Makadi Bay. The hotel chain, which has existed for more than 30 years and is exclusively marketed by ETI, opened the three hotels in Port Ghalib in March 2015.

Israel again allows travel to almost all countries

Despite the global Omicron outbreak, Israel wants to allow travel to almost all countries again. The USA, Great Britain and Switzerland should also be removed from the list of "red" countries, according to the ORF. The responsible ministry also pointed out, however, that in many countries the infection rates are higher than in Israel, which is why one should "not travel there without good reason". After the Omicron variant of the coronavirus was discovered, Israel initially imposed strict travel restrictions. However, experts believe that these are no longer helpful because Omicron has now spread widely within Israel.
