Leipzig and Dresden benefited from cargo demand

The German airports of Dresden and Leipzig were able to benefit primarily from the increased demand for freight last year, as the number of passengers was well below the pre-crisis level. Passenger volume at Dresden and Leipzig/Halle airports in 2021 was 1.001.270 percent higher than the previous year, with a total of 9,0 passengers. The picture is different at the two locations. Dresden airport, which is dominated by scheduled and business travel, counted 331.384 passengers, 14,1 percent fewer than in the previous year. At Leipzig/Halle airport, which is dominated by holiday travel, the number of passengers rose by 25,8 percent to 669.886. Cargo handling at Leipzig/Halle airport rose by 2021 percent in 15, from around 1,3 to almost 1,6 million tons. This marks a new record high. Growth increased particularly sharply in the fourth quarter. In October, November and December, volumes reached new record levels. In December, this figure was 149.123 tonnes, an increase of 5,8 percent compared to the previous year. "The steadily growing air freight volume not only contributes to the economic development of our group of companies. Rising freight volumes, employment growth and new settlements also provide sustainable impetus. All of Central Germany benefits from this. We also expect freight growth for 2022," says Götz Ahmelmann, CEO of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, adding: "For passenger traffic, we hope - depending on the pandemic - for a further recovery, which also includes business travel. In contrast to tourist flights to warm water destinations, demand here has so far fallen short of expectations."

Luxair won't be fooled by London City

The airline Luxair does not want to lose its bread-and-butter route between Luxembourg and London City. The carrier is reacting to the announcement by competitor British Airways, which will send its subsidiary BA Cityflyer on this route, and is increasing the frequencies. Up to now, Luxair has operated the "shuttle service" between the two financial centers in a monopoly. BA Cityflyer will soon start this route with Embraer 170/190s, giving the current market leader serious competition. But Luxair is not going to let that happen and is increasing the London City route to up to five daily rotations as of March 1, 2022. While BA Cityflyer will fly with Embraer jets, Luxair will continue to rely on de Havilland Dash 8-400 turboprop aircraft. The Luxembourg carrier even allows itself the expensive luxury of night stops at the inner-city airport of the British capital. Parking aircraft is particularly expensive here.

Germany makes Austria and 35 other countries a high-risk area

Once again, Germany has classified the Republic of Austria as a so-called Corona high-risk area. This classification was only lifted over the Christmas holidays. In addition to Austria, another 35 countries have received this negative designation. From January 16, 2022, the German Robert Koch Institute will consider the countries listed below as so-called high-risk areas. This is associated with an automatic travel warning, but more and more German tour operators are no longer recognizing this for free cancellations. The reclassification has no significant impact on vaccinated and recovered people, but unvaccinated people must be quarantined for ten days, but can test themselves free after five days at their own expense. Germany's additional high-risk areas: Albania Antigua and Barbuda Equatorial Guinea Benin Bosnia and Herzegovina Bulgaria Burkina Faso Costa Rica The Dominican Republic Djibouti Eritrea France - the French overseas territory of St. Pierre and Miquelon Gambia Guinea-Bissau Guyana Colombia Latvia Liberia Madagascar The Netherlands - the overseas part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands St. Martin Niger North Macedonia Austria - with the exception of the municipalities of Mittelberg and Jungholz and the Rißtal in the municipal area of Vomp and Eben am Achensee Peru The Philippines St. Kitts and Nevis St. Lucia St. Vincent and the Grenadines São Tomé and Príncipe Senegal Serbia Somalia Suriname Chad The Central African Republic

DTM: Despite the pandemic, around 40 percent more passengers than in 2020

Last year, a total of 1.692.960 passengers used Dortmund Airport. That was 39 percent more than in 2020. Due to the pandemic, the airport has not yet been able to match the passenger numbers of the record year 2019. At that time, around 2,7 million passengers started or ended their journey in Dortmund. "We are pleased that the airport was able to achieve figures like in the pre-crisis year of 2019 in the summer months. This means that the airport recovered particularly quickly from the corona-related slump in spring compared to the rest of Germany. Nevertheless, the low passenger numbers in spring could not be offset over the whole year," summarizes airport managing director Ludger van Bebber. In the winter months, passenger numbers fell again due to the emergence of the Omicron virus variant. Passenger numbers rose significantly again during the North Rhine-Westphalia Christmas holidays compared to the previous year. 108.696 passengers used Dortmund Airport to travel around the holidays. Overall, the number of passengers approached the figure for 2019. At that time, the airport recorded 115.122 passengers. In 2020, the number of passengers had plummeted to 29.076 due to the pandemic. "The holiday figures are encouraging. The development in the summer also shows that people want to travel more again. We hope that the pandemic situation will ease as quickly as possible so that we can soon return to more everyday life - including in the form of travel. We are pleased that we have already been able to significantly increase passenger numbers again this year," said airport boss Ludger van Bebber, looking confidently to the future. 2022 destinations in 53 countries have already been confirmed for the coming summer of 25. Dortmund Airport thus offers

In the final quarter of 2021, the US airline had a turnover of just over 8,45 billion US dollars (the equivalent of just under 7,4 billion euros). Nevertheless, the red pen has to be used. Because the bottom line was a loss of 408 million dollars. Despite foreseeable losses due to the spread of the Omikron variant, Delta Air Lines wants to be profitable again from March. After a weak start to the year with the expected loss-making months of January and February, the company expects a good result for all subsequent quarters and a "significant profit" for the full year, said CFO Dan Janki in a press release. Around the Christmas holidays and New Year, Delta, like other airlines in the USA, had canceled several hundred flights. The reason was the spread of the Omikron variant of the coronavirus and bad weather. The former also had a drastic impact on the company's workforce, said CEO Ed Bastian. "Omikron is expected to delay the recovery in demand by 60 days," he said. Delta's flight operations have now returned to pre-Christmas levels. Bastian expects increased demand for travel, especially in spring and summer.
