Crisis year 2021 ends at the Vienna location with almost 10,4 million passengers

After a very low number of passengers in the first quarter due to the pandemic, Vienna Airport only really got going afterwards. The bottom line is that the crisis year 202 ended with 10,4 million passengers, a decrease of 67,1 percent compared to the pre-crisis level in 2019. There is still a lot of room for improvement. Compared to 2019, both the number of passengers in transfer traffic (-65,0 percent) and the number of local passengers (-67,7 percent) fell. The number of take-offs and landings fell by 58,2 percent and the seat load factor fell by 14,8 percent to 62,5 percent. Freight volumes also recorded a decrease in 2021, although this was nowhere near as severe as the number of passengers (-7,9 percent). The international investments of the Vienna Airport Group were also still heavily affected by the Covid 2021 pandemic in 19: Malta Airport recorded a decrease of 2021 percent compared to 2.540.335 with 65,2 passengers in 2019. Kosice Airport recorded a decrease of 166.515 percent compared to 2021 with 70,0 passengers in 2019. "Aviation is slowly coming back: in 2021, with 10,4 million passengers in Vienna, we recorded a third more than in the first year of Corona, 2020. The first few months of this year will still be very challenging, but with the start of the summer flight schedule at the end of March 2022, we expect a significant upturn in passenger numbers," said Julian Jäger, CEO of Vienna Airport AG. From the current perspective, the airport expects around 2022 million passengers in 17 as a whole, a significant increase compared to 2021, Jäger continued. In addition, from today's perspective, the

Flights and long-distance trains: France is introducing 2G with many exceptions

Following Italy, France is also making it difficult for unvaccinated people to use long-distance trains and planes. The 2G rule is being introduced, which means that people without a recovery or vaccination certificate are not allowed to use rail or air connections. In contrast to Italy, however, local public transport is not (yet) affected. In France, a few exceptions are also provided that can at least allow unvaccinated people to travel domestically. The aim of the measure passed by the French Senate is to severely restrict the radius of movement of unvaccinated people. Access to culture and restaurants will also be linked to 2G status in the future. However, the new regulation also has complicated exceptions, as these are primarily linked to the number of people in hospitals. If there are more than 10.000 corona patients, the 2G rule should apply. But there is an exception to this too, because if you, as an unvaccinated person, have an important, urgent reason to travel, you can use long-distance trains and flights upon presentation of proof and a negative corona test. Interestingly, there is a special regulation for people who have not yet been vaccinated but have already made an appointment. They are allowed to travel on long-distance and air routes with their appointment confirmation and a negative corona test.

Air Serbia takes delivery of first ATR72-600

The airline Air Serbia has taken delivery of the first ATR72-600. This is a used aircraft that is around 6,6 years old and was last used by Amelia International as F-HIPY. The turboprop aircraft already bears the livery of the Serbian carrier. Air Serbia is modernizing its aging ATR72 fleet this year. The existing 200 and 500 models are being replaced with 600s. The airline is using the used market or lessors. The first new addition is being leased from Nordic Aviation Capital. This lessor is currently in bankruptcy proceedings in the USA. Air Serbia's turboprop fleet currently consists of three ATR72-200s. These are around 31 years old and will therefore be replaced primarily by ATR72-600s. There are also two ATR72-500s that are 24 and 23 years old respectively. These are also to be replaced by the successor model. The renewal program had already been decided before the Corona pandemic, but it was temporarily interrupted and is now being continued. The addition of five ATR72-600s to the fleet is fixed, but consideration is being given to possibly adding more units.

Spanish government wants to make IAG attractive to join Air Europa

The planned takeover of Air Europa by the International Airlines Group has fallen through, but the Spanish government wants to make a new attempt. This time, they are considering whether the state could officially step in. The Spanish government has repeatedly granted Air Europa emergency loans, including through the Sepi fund. These could be converted into a stake of up to 40 percent. The aim is to make the International Airlines Group's entry more attractive, as the state would be taking on the risk. Neither IAG nor Air Europa and its owner Globalia have officially commented on the relevant media reports. The government is more forthcoming, however, as a spokesperson confirmed that this possibility is currently being evaluated and discussed with stakeholders. The government's plan is for Globalia to remain on board with a small share, the state to hold around 40 percent and the rest to go to the International Airlines Group. The coming weeks and months will show whether this can be implemented. A complete takeover by IAG has previously fallen through.

Ultra short haul: Air Malta and Malta Air in comparison

Ultra-short-haul flights are always the target of criticism and are being taxed particularly heavily by an increasing number of countries. For understandable reasons, islands can usually only be reached by sea or air. It is therefore in the nature of things that there must also be particularly short flights. So short that even Ryanair does not sell anything on board. The Irish low-cost airline and its subsidiaries Lauda Europe, Buzz, Malta Air and Ryanair UK are known throughout Europe as flying general merchandise retailers. From drinks and snacks to perfumes and scratch cards to smartphone gadgets, pretty much everything is on offer. Depending on the crew on duty, this can be subtle or downright intrusive. The income from on-board sales is a not insignificant part of the group's turnover. It is all the more surprising when there are no sales at all. The islands of Sicily and Malta traditionally have a lot in common. It is therefore not surprising that Malta Air (Ryanair) and the state-owned Air Malta connect several cities in Sicily with Luqa Airport. Before the Corona pandemic, flights were even extremely frequent, so that one could speak of a kind of "air bridge". Currently, the offer is reduced, but this does not prevent the two players from continuing to compete fiercely. This is fiercest on the Malta-Catania-Malta route, as this is practically the race track between the two islands. Air Malta also offers flights to Palermo and Ryanair competitor Malta Air also flies to Trapani. In the past, there were also regular flights to Comiso. Due to the current situation, the 2022/21 winter flight schedule focuses on

Salzburg: Wizz Air also cancels Varna plans

In the summer of 2020, the low-cost airline Wizz Air was introduced as a great hope at Salzburg Airport. After just a few flights, however, it was over again and since then the low-cost airline has been postponing its comeback at regular intervals. Now only two routes to the city of Mozart are planned. Last year, the start of the Varna flights was canceled at very short notice and postponed by a whole year. Now Wizz Air has completely changed its mind and completely deleted the Bulgaria route from the reservation system. This carrier will not offer any flights to the Black Sea from Salzburg in the 2022 summer flight schedule. Currently, only the planned destinations of Kiev and St. Petersburg remain. Both routes were supposed to start in September 2020. However, Wizz Air is postponing the first flights at regular intervals. It is currently planned that these will be served from the end of March 2022. It remains to be seen whether there will actually be a start or a further postponement. In contrast to Vienna, Wizz Air does not have any aircraft stationed in the city of Mozart.
