Airbus establishes air freight service with BelugaST freighters

Aircraft manufacturer Airbus has set up an air freight service that will use its Beluga freighter fleet to transport oversized cargo. The group's five Airbus BelugaST aircraft have a maximum payload of 40 tonnes and have previously been used to transport large aircraft parts between locations. The new "Airbus Beluga Transport" service will now gradually use these machines to transport oversized loads for customers in sectors such as energy, aerospace and the military, the aircraft manufacturer announced. The group will replace the whale-shaped BelugaST aircraft with a fleet of six new-generation BelugaXL aircraft with a capacity of 44 tonnes. Once Airbus has put all six new BelugaXLs into operation, the fully approved BelugaST fleet will be handed over to a newly established subsidiary with its own Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) and its own staff. "The larger cross-section of the Beluga will open up new markets and new logistical opportunities for customers. When loading helicopters, it is a great advantage that they do not have to be dismantled. Likewise, the largest engines of commercial aircraft can be accommodated in a fully enclosed configuration,” said Phillippe Sabo, Head of ATI and Air Oversize Transport at Airbus.

Smartwings lands in Antarctica with Boeing 737-Max-8

The Czech airline Smartwings landed in Antarctica for the first time with a Boeing 26 Max on January 2022, 737. A charter flight was carried out with the OK-SWB. This is the first landing of this type on this continent. It was comparatively quick for a carrier to use a Boeing 737 Max 8 for the first time as part of a flight order towards the eternal ice, because the four-engine Airbus A340, for example, had to wait much longer. Smartwings landed with the OK-SWB at Troll Airfield, which is located in the north of Antarctica. There is no classic runway made of concrete or asphalt, because the ground is frozen pretty much all year round. Therefore, the aircraft used for the research missions land on ice. The special flight first took off from Oslo, Norway, and headed for Cape Town. A stopover was made in N'Djamena. From South Africa it then went directly to Antarctica. After a stop of around two hours, OK-SWB started the return journey to Oslo (via Cape Town). The crew of the Smartwings aircraft received continuous weather reports and updates on the airport's operational capability during the flight via datalink and satellite phone communication. The 3.000 m long ice-covered runway is used for landing and take-off. The thickness of the ice was measured and analyzed to restrain the operation. The surface was specially prepared and the braking effect measured by the Norwegian Polar Institute before the operation to enable take-off and landing in accordance with the aircraft manufacturers' regulations and standards, while maintaining all safety margins. Landing on ice requires a specially trained crew consisting of

Sweden: Air Leap had to stop flying

The corona pandemic has found another victim in the Swedish regional airline Air Leap. The carrier had to cease flight operations completely on Monday. According to a statement by the management board, this is for financial reasons. Until recently, the Swedish regional carrier had a fleet consisting of an ATR72-500 and four Saab 340Bs. In addition, two Lipican Aer Saab 2000s were in use on behalf of Air Leap as part of a wet lease agreement. The management stated that they are unable to maintain flight operations under the current conditions. Among other things, they stated that they flew for two years without any financial help from the government and thus maintained connectivity. They are no longer able to do this for financial reasons. However, they do not want to talk about throwing in the towel completely yet. The aim is to extensively restructure the company. In Norway, where Air Leap was also active, a Fokker 50 operated by Amapola Flyg was also in use. However, the offshoot does not have its own AOC, but operates under the Swedish certificates.

Air Serbia announces Amman, Lyon and Sochi

Air Serbia has announced the launch of three new routes for the 2022 summer schedule: Amman, Lyon and Sochi. The routes will be served from the beginning of June 2022. From June 1, 2022, Air Serbia plans to fly several times a week between Belgrade and Amman. The following day, two weekly flights to Sochi in Russia will be launched. The Serbian carrier plans to fly to Lyon from June 3, 2022. The decision to launch non-stop flights to Amman is the result of the strategic importance of renewing our presence in the Middle East region, while the planned launch of flights to Sochi is the result of the importance of the Russian market for Air Serbia and the fact that this destination is underserved with direct international flights. Thanks to extremely successful routes to Krasnodar and Rostov-on-Don, we have positioned ourselves as one of the airlines with the largest market share between Russia and the Balkans. We are also focused on strengthening our presence in France, which is why we are launching flights to Lyon, which is one of the most prosperous regions in the country and a market with great potential. We are happy to expand our network with these new destinations and look forward to further expansion in the coming period,” said Boško Rupić, Air Serbia's Sales Manager. Amman flights were originally scheduled to start in June 2020, but were postponed until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic. Until 2001, non-stop flights on this route were operated by its predecessor JAT Yugoslav Airlines. Amman flight schedule: Flight No. Place of departure Time of departure
