UFO criticizes the AOC relocation of the Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings Europe

The cabin crew union Independent Flight Attendants Organisation (UFO) criticises the Lufthansa Group's decision to relocate Eurowings Europe to Malta. "We suspect that the group is trying to copy Ryanair's tax avoidance strategies. You would think that after being rescued by the state crisis package, the Lufthansa Group should show that it stands for fair competition and working conditions," said Anja Bronstert, deputy chairwoman of UFO. The employer Eurowings Europe informed employees in an internal letter that this step to relocate operations abroad was merely to avoid double taxation and would have no impact on working conditions. "For Eurowings Europe employees working in Germany, who have been confronted with closure plans for more than two years, such news is a slap in the face," Bronstert continued. Last week, an internal company circular stated that employees would be allowed to continue working at their current base in Munich until the end of the summer flight schedule. However, the future prospects were left open. "There are many signs that the company will close. Employees fear that they will have to give it their all again in the highly productive summer and then leave," explains UFO tariff officer Maximilian Kampka. Eurowings Europe is a wholly owned subsidiary of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and initially benefited primarily from the lack of tariffs.

Wizz Air, Ryanair and AUA continue to fly to Ukraine

The airlines Wizz Air, Austrian Airlines and Ryanair want to maintain their flights to Ukraine until further notice. In some cases, these are only offered on a reduced scale, as AUA is temporarily no longer flying to Kyiv-Borispil and Odessa. Ryanair has already canceled Kherson and Kharkiv. A spokeswoman for Wizz Air explained when asked: "Wizz Air continues to monitor the situation in Ukraine closely. We have currently made no changes to our flight schedule and all of our flights to and from Ukraine will continue to operate as usual. All passengers with booked flights to and from Ukraine are advised to check their email accounts regularly for further information on the booked flights." Competitor Austrian Airlines currently only serves Lviv in Ukraine. This will also remain temporary, according to a spokeswoman: "Due to the current situation, flights to Kyiv-Borispil and Odessa are currently suspended. No further restrictions on our flights are known." Ryanair currently plans to continue flying to Ukraine, apart from Kherson and Kharkiv. A media spokesperson said: "We are still flying, but we are keeping an eye on further developments around the clock and will react at short notice if necessary." It was also pointed out that Ukraine has not issued a NOTAM and that EASA has still not issued any recommendations to airlines and pilots.

The supervisory board appoints Annette Mann as the new AUA boss

The Supervisory Board of Austrian Airlines has officially appointed Lufthansa manager Annette Mann as the new General Director. She will take up her post on March 1, 2022. CCO Michael Trestl and COO Francesco Sciortino will remain on the Executive Board. The latter two managers are currently acting ad interim as equal CEOs, as Alexis von Hoensbroech has left the company and has since started his new job at the Canadian company Westjet. Annette Mann will also take over the financial fortunes of Austrian Airlines. The previous division of agendas will thus be maintained and the CEO will also be responsible for finance. Incidentally, Mann is the first woman in AUA's history to head the carrier. The six members of the Supervisory Board would like to thank the two Executive Board members Michael Trestl and Francesco Sciortino for the smooth transition period. Supervisory Board Chairwoman Christina Foerster: “Michael Trestl and Francesco Sciortino have managed the company excellently during this phase too, despite the ongoing pandemic. This means that all the conditions are in place for Annette Mann to have a good start. With Annette Mann, Austrian Airlines has a top manager with broad expertise at its helm. We are certain that together with the Austrian team and soon with more passengers on board, the upturn will be a success and we look forward to working together!”

Tui Austria: Airports in popular destinations are already scarce

Easter holiday time is travel time, and this is also reflected in the current booking figures: the flights to the popular medium-haul destinations are almost fully booked. On medium-haul routes, Hurghada is currently ahead of Mallorca and the Canary Islands, while on long-haul routes Dubai is ahead, followed by the Maldives and Mexico - this is the current booking ranking at Tui Austria. Due to the high demand for trips to the Red Sea, a second additional Easter flight with Austrian Airlines from April 9 to 16, 2022 from Vienna to Hurghada was added to the original flight program. Despite the increase in medium-haul airspace, some destinations will be tight during the Easter holidays. "We can see that the main holiday dates are again in high demand this year," says a delighted David Szabo, Head of Operations at Tui Austria. "We are even seeing a strong volume of bookings for the autumn holidays at the end of October. We have reacted accordingly and have already increased the number of seats to Cyprus and Hurghada by 2.000." For the Easter holidays, there are currently seats available on the additional flight to Hurghada from Vienna on April 9, as well as remaining seats with departures from April 8 to 11 to Crete, Antalya, Mallorca, Cyprus and the Canary Islands. Tui guests from Salzburg can still choose between Sardinia (Olbia), Mallorca and Gran Canaria, and there are still seats available to Mallorca from Linz.

Cockpit Association mourns the loss of Gail Halvorsen

It is with deep sadness that the Cockpit Association bids farewell to one of the most famous pilots of the Berlin Airlift, Colonel Gail Halvorsen. He was 101 years old. "We bow to Gail Halvorsen. With him we bid farewell to one of the great pilots who was closely associated with the Cockpit Association. His actions are still an example of reconciliation and international understanding. We will miss him," said VC President Stefan Herth. Gail Halvorsen actively supported the Cockpit Association in bringing the world conference of international pilot associations to Berlin for the 70th anniversary of the airlift. The conference, with participants from over a hundred countries, was named "Building Bridges" in his spirit. As a pilot of the airlift, Colonel Halvorsen was the first to start dropping candy on parachutes made of handkerchiefs for Berlin children during the approach to Berlin. His action soon led to "Operation Little Vittles", in which over 1948 tons of sweets were dropped over Berlin between September 1949 and May 23. Halvorsen was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit and was, among other things, commander of the 7350th Air Base Group at Berlin's Tempelhof Airport.
