Summer: Ryanair plans 91 routes from VIE

The Irish low-cost airline Ryanair is planning its most extensive summer flight schedule from Vienna for the coming summer, with 15 new flight connections. The carrier will now serve a total of 91 routes from Vienna-Schwechat Airport. The new destinations served are Amman, Banja Luka, Bremen, Genoa, Kosice, Lamezia, Lappeenranta, Manchester, Perugia, Pula, Rimini, Stockholm, Venice, Zaragoza and Sibiu. With 19 aircraft stationed - and thus five additional - the airline's total investment in Vienna will now amount to over two billion euros, the carrier said in a press release. New staff will also be hired for the planned fleet expansion; the low-cost airline is looking for a total of 50 new flight attendants. At this point, Ryanair does not miss the opportunity to fire at the competition: "Ryanair continues to grow in Vienna, while Easyjet and Level have ceased operations and Austrian Airlines and Wizz Air have reduced their capacities, fleets and routes." In fact, a few days ago Wizz Air deleted many destinations from the planned summer flight schedule, thereby significantly reducing its presence in VIE. "As Austria's fastest-growing airline, Ryanair is delighted to announce the most extensive Vienna flight schedule to date with a total of 91 destinations. We are achieving this growth even without state aid, while AUA, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, has received 300 million euros in financial injections from Austrian taxpayers, but in return has reduced its fleet by 20 percent, cut 1.200 jobs and achieved a 66 percent drop in traffic in the fourth quarter," said Ryanair Group CEO Michael O'Leary.

Works council elections at Eurowings Discover will begin on April 13

At the Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings Discover, which was newly founded in 2021 and has not yet been subject to collective bargaining, works council elections will be initiated on April 13. The two unions for the flying personnel, Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) and Unabhängige Flugbegleiter Organisation (UFO), had long campaigned for this fundamental step in the interests of strong representation of interests. "The works council election is an important milestone for all employees at Eurowings Discover," said Marcel Gröls, Chairman of Collective Bargaining Policy at VC. "A functioning social partnership is equally beneficial for companies and employees. It offers all sides security in planning and perspectives." "The cooperation with the employer regarding the intended establishment of a works council is fortunately constructive - for example, the company is providing premises for the election," said Anja Bronstert, Deputy Chairwoman of UFO. In summer 2021, the airline Eurowings Discover, which was newly founded within the Lufthansa Group, began its long-haul flight operations. According to the company, the focus on the tourism segment is intended to open up new markets and achieve sustainable growth. Several hundred employees were hired for the launch alone in the cabin and cockpit. Large parts of the workforce come from the previously closed airlines SunExpress Germany, Germanwings and the German location of Brussels Airlines. However, there were no takeover arrangements agreed with the unions for these employees who had previously lost their jobs.

In just two days, around 3.000 employees collected relief supplies with a loading volume of 40 tons, which were loaded in Ried im Innkreis and transported by freight forwarder to a distribution center on the Polish-Ukrainian border. "The fact that the internal appeal for donations received such a great response also testifies to the great concern of the FACC workforce about the current conflict," the broadcast said. Zurich Airport has had a challenging year

Zurich Airport recovered from the slump in the previous year in 2021. Nevertheless, the airport operator remained in the red. At 2021 million, sales in 680 were still 46 percent lower than in 2019, the airport announced on Tuesday. In 2021, less than half as many planes landed and took off in Kloten as before Corona. In the second half of 2021, the airport already achieved a positive result again. Strict cost discipline helped. Despite the high fixed costs of maintaining airport operations, the airport managed to further reduce operating costs. In 2021, these were 2020 percent lower than in 8 and 2019 percent lower than in 24. The lower costs are due, among other things, to lower expenses for personnel thanks to short-time work. The bottom line, however, was only that the loss was contained. Despite profits in the second half of the year, there was a loss of 2021 million for the whole of 10. In the previous year, however, this figure had been 69 million. "The year 2021 was also dominated by the pandemic. The general travel restrictions and quarantine rules were drastic, as they made travel almost impossible and unsettled passengers. From a business perspective, the great planning uncertainty was also a huge challenge. I am all the more pleased that, together with our partners at the airport, we were able to ensure largely smooth operations," said airport boss Stephan Widrig. However, the airport expects things to improve further. The start of the current year was influenced by Omikron. In addition, the war in Ukraine is causing additional uncertainty.

Lack of slots: Ryanair cancels 19 routes from Lisbon

The low-cost airline Ryanair had speculated on obtaining the take-off and landing rights in Lisbon that its competitor Tap is not currently using. This plan was not successful and now the low-cost airline has to significantly cut the program announced for summer 2022. The carrier announced that 19 routes from Lisbon will be canceled. Three additional aircraft that would have come as part of the planned expansion will also not arrive. Ryanair claims that this would result in 150 jobs being lost. Lisbon Airport would lose around 5.000 flights per year. The route cancellations also affect connections from Germany. The Lisbon flights from Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden and Memmingen will not be served in summer 2022. Likewise, the Spanish capital Madrid will no longer be served from Lisbon. A detailed overview of the 19 canceled destinations can be found at the end of this article. The low-cost airline presents the matter as follows: It accuses its competitor TAP of "blocking" take-off and landing rights. The Portuguese airline will not be able to use these in the upcoming 2022 summer flight schedule period. Ryanair accuses the Portuguese government of protecting TAP and blocking the release of the slots that the low-cost airline wanted. Ryanair confirmed that the three aircraft and the 19 canceled routes will return to Lisbon in October 2022 for Ryanair's winter flight schedule, as there are enough take-off and landing rights for these flights in the 2022/23 winter flight schedule. "We regret this unnecessary inconvenience for all passengers on these canceled flights and the loss of 19 routes due to the blocking of unused
