A Michelin star for the Mountain Hub Gourmet at the Hilton Munich Airport

It has been speculated about for some time and now it is here: the Michelin star for the Mountain Hub Gourmet in the Hilton Munich Airport. On Wednesday afternoon, the Michelin Guide announced its star ratings in Hamburg and the fine dining restaurant at Munich Airport was awarded for the first time. With this award, Germany has once again received a star restaurant at an airport - and that only six months after the reopening of the Mountain Hub Gourmet. "For me as a gourmet lover, the star has enormous significance and of course we are incredibly proud of the team with Stefan Barnhusen. The award shows what great quality our product has and that hard work definitely pays off!" says Markus Hussler, General Manager of the Hilton Munich Airport. He is certain that the star will further increase the restaurant's popularity and highlight the gastronomic variety and quality at Munich Airport. Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport GmbH, is also delighted with this news: "The fact that Munich Airport can now boast a Michelin-starred restaurant is great news for the airport and its guests. We wholeheartedly congratulate the chef and management of our Hilton Hotel on this great success. For our Munich Airport, the first European 'five-star airport', this award is in a sense the sixth star."

Fraport: Fewer passengers due to omicron propagation

Frankfurt Airport counted around 2,1 million passengers last month. An increase of 211,3 percent compared to the same period last year, when demand was very weak due to tightened travel restrictions. Although the dynamic spread of the Omicron variant has slowed the recovery in demand, the removal of individual travel restrictions has stimulated tourist traffic at the Frankfurt site, according to the airport operator. Compared to February 2019, passenger volume in Frankfurt remained just under half of the level at that time. Cargo volumes fell by 8,8 percent to 164.769 tons in February. According to Fraport, the reason for this was in particular the early timing of the Chinese New Year. The number of flight movements, on the other hand, rose by 100,8 percent to 22.328 takeoffs and landings. At just under 1,5 million tons, the total maximum takeoff weights grew by 53,0 percent (each compared to February 2021). Passenger numbers at the Group's international and affiliated airports also developed positively again. With the exception of Xi'an in China, all locations achieved significant increases, in some cases of over 100 percent, compared to the sharply reduced air traffic in February 2021.

Air France-KLM plans to buy majority stake in ITA Airways

The French-Dutch airline group Air France-KLM and Delta Air Lines have expressed interest in acquiring a majority stake in the Italian ITA Airways. This was confirmed in a joint letter addressed to the Ministry of Finance. It was recently announced that Lufthansa and MSC are interested in acquiring a stake in ITA Airways. This obviously put the competitor under pressure, as there are fears that access to the Italian market could be lost. If the crane group wins the contract, it is also likely that ITA Airways could leave Skyteam and switch to Star Alliance. The offer would be a counter-proposal to the expression of interest that Lufthansa and the shipping giant MSC made at the end of January, although it was later clarified that it was a combination of a minority stake by Lufthansa and a majority stake by MSC. And a third expression of interest came from another international fund, also not named in La Repubblica's report, which, according to the source, had previously invested in "the world's main low-cost carriers." Air France-KLM, Delta and Virgin Atlantic told Reuters in a statement that they want to work with the management of the new Alitalia "to deepen our cooperation, including possible associate membership in the airlines' enlarged joint venture to be established in 2020," but declined further comment.

No insurance coverage: Air Astana suspends Russia flights

The Kazakh airline Air Astana is temporarily suspending all connections to Russia. The airline also intends to temporarily stop using the airspace of the Russian Federation. The reason for this is that it currently has no insurance cover for this area. The news agency Tass reports, citing a statement from Air Astana, that the carrier is in talks with the Kazakh government. It is conceivable that a resumption of flights could be arranged with the help of state liability. More and more insurers are excluding coverage in the airspace of the Russian Federation. Meanwhile, the Russian government has ordered that the airports in the south of the country remain closed to civil air traffic until at least March 20, 2022. Krasnodar, Anapa, Gelendzhik and Rostov-on-Don are among those affected. It is emphasized that Sochi should remain open. The airports in the annexed Crimea are also closed to civil flights.
