Flight from Ryanair: Croatia Airlines is increasingly relying on Split

Star Alliance member Croatia Airlines is reacting to the impending expansion of competitor Ryanair in Zagreb and Zadar. The carrier is moving some routes to Split Airport, where there is significantly less competition. These are the destinations Stockholm-Arlanda, Bucharest, Dublin, Milan-Malpensa and Amsterdam. Furthermore, the currently suspended route between Osijek and Munich will be reactivated on May 2, 2022. This will then be served twice a week, although no aircraft will continue to be stationed in the Croatian city. Ryanair has been expanding strongly in Croatia for some time. The Maltese airline Lauda Europe has bases at Zagreb and Zadar airports. In addition, other group airlines fly to the two airports from other bases. Croatia Airlines is apparently feeling increasing pressure from its Irish competitor. In terms of product, it recently introduced an innovation: a slimmed-down business class. The Star Alliance member is offering more nonstop connections to/from Split in the upcoming summer season. There is less competition at this airport because the Ryanair Group is concentrating heavily on Zagreb, Zadar and Dubrovnik. Croatia Airlines will start the new Split routes in mid-June 2022 and will serve them as follows: three times a week Milan-Malpensa, once a week Amsterdam, twice a week Bucharest, three times a week Dublin and twice a week Stockholm-Arlanda. The carrier expressly does not rule out the possibility of adding further nonstop flights from secondary Croatian airports. These would then be at the expense of the Zagreb offer.

Air France promises Hop up to 50 Embraer 190-E2s

The French regional airline Hop has been promised an order for 35 to 50 Embraer 190-E2s by its parent company Air France. However, management has tied this possible order to a number of conditions that must be negotiated with staff representatives. First and foremost, this involves adjusting wages. According to a report by “Les Echos”, new hires will be paid lower salaries and the productivity of the existing workforce will be increased. Official negotiations with employee representatives are to begin in the next few days. Air France wants to make a final decision on the possible E2022 order by summer 2 at the latest. In the wake of the corona pandemic, the Hop fleet has been greatly reduced. The Bombardier CRJ-1000 aircraft is currently being phased out. A compromise has been reached with the unions that the Hop fleet will not be smaller than 29 commercial aircraft. The parent company is renewing its short-haul fleet with the Airbus A220 aircraft. The low-cost airline Transavia is also planning to renew its fleet. Together with KLM, it is switching from the Boeing 737-800 to the A320neo series.

Vienna: Airlines expect high demand in summer 2022

At the end of this month, the 2022 summer flight schedule will also come into force at Vienna-Schwechat Airport. The most striking innovation is that Terminal 2, including gate areas B, C and D, will be back in operation. In addition to the new security check, there will also be new lounges in this complex, which is being reactivated. The airlines operating from Vienna-Schwechat are significantly increasing their services again. This does not include Wizz Air, which will reduce its presence at Austria's largest airport. It was recently decided that a further 15 destinations would be cancelled and two aircraft would be withdrawn. Competitor Ryanair says it is adding 15 additional destinations. Austrian Airlines is resuming flights to Los Angeles, Gothenburg and Bologna, for example. After a pandemic-related break, Air Corsica, China Airlines, Condor, EVA Air, Flynas, Kuwait and Volotea are also returning to Vienna. Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and SunExpress are offering more frequencies on existing routes. There are many offers to choose from, especially to Europe and the Mediterranean region, and with a total of 190 destinations, Vienna Airport will almost cover the pre-crisis offer (2022) in summer 2019. The ongoing hostilities in Ukraine are very concerning: There are currently no flights between Ukraine, Russia and Vienna, and further effects of the developments in Ukraine on aviation are currently difficult to estimate. "The new summer flight schedule reflects the Austrians' desire to travel after two years of pandemic: Up to 190 destinations in 60 countries will be accessible directly from Vienna this year, which corresponds to

Vienna Airport is urgently looking for apprentices

Vienna-Schwechat Airport is currently looking for young people who want to do an apprenticeship at Austria's largest airport. CEO Günther Ofner even says that they are "urgently looking for apprentices". Vienna Airport AG is currently training 53 apprentices in the fields of electrical and building technology, automotive and commercial vehicle technology, metal technology, sanitary, ventilation and heating technology, and IT. After the basic training in the company's own training workshop, there is a smooth transition to the specialist areas, where apprentices are familiarized with the job-specific content. The airport also provides the young people with additional qualifications: for example, regular seminars in the area of personal development, English courses, and math coaching are on the program. There is also the option of completing the apprenticeship with a high school diploma. A special highlight is an exchange program with international airports that apprentices can complete as part of their training. State Secretary Claudia Plakolm was also a guest recently and saw for herself the apprentice training at Vienna-Schwechat Airport. The government member said, among other things: "The apprenticeship is not Plan B if school doesn't work out, but Plan A for practical training that will start your career. Vienna Airport is a model company in this respect, which is also managing to inspire more and more young women to take up technical professions." Airport board member Günther Ofner explained: "Apprentices are urgently needed at the airport and we warmly invite interested young people to apply to us. They can expect future-oriented training: well-trained specialists are always in demand, especially in technical areas - for modern offices with increasingly complex building technology, there will be a shortage of apprentices in the next few years.

Zeltweg: Eurofighters are said to have narrowly escaped a collision

According to a report by the news magazine Profil, two Eurofighter interceptors almost collided at Zeltweg Air Base last year. This is said to have occurred during an approach maneuver. The media outlet also writes that the cause was a pilot error. According to Profil information, the incident was so serious that the air force commanders prepared an official report to the Ministry of Defense. The BMLV did not want to comment to the news magazine on this, as incidents during operations and training in connection with the Eurofighters are subject to military secrecy. According to the news magazine, the Austrian air force is statistically one of the safest in the world. However, due to a lack of capacity, the Eurofighter pilots only manage around 100 flight hours per year. Internationally, this figure is significantly higher. The dangers of a lack of practice in the operation of military aircraft were also pointed out in the 2019 report "Bundesheer 2030" by former Defense Minister Thomas Starlinger. It states: “A lack of flight hours increases the risk of aviation accidents.”
