Innsbruck boss represents regional airports at ACI Europe

The Innsbruck airport director, Marco Pernetta, was elected chairman of this member group in the European association ACI Europe during the conference of European regional airports. The first meeting of European regional airports after two years of the corona pandemic took place in Palermo at the beginning of this week. On the one hand, the meeting was under the impression of the consequences of the pandemic, which has hit aviation particularly hard in the past two years, but on the other hand, these consequences are put into perspective against the background of the current war in Ukraine. The more than 200 delegates experienced a very moving appearance by the director of Odessa airport, who reported on the dramatic developments and consequences of the war in Ukraine. Civil airports and their employees in particular have been one of the main targets of Russian attacks since the beginning of the war. Another important item on the agenda of the conference was the election of the new chairman, which this time fell to the managing director of Innsbruck Airport, Marco Pernetta. Pernetta will thus take over the chairmanship of the group with the largest number of members in the European airport association ACI Europe for the next two years and, together with his deputy Andrea Andorno, CEO of Turin Airport, will represent over 250 European regional airports. "It is a great honour for me to serve as chairman of ACI Europe, the interest group that is so important in the aviation industry," said Pernetta immediately after his election. "After the long Corona pandemic, we had hoped to be able to return to some normality in 2022, but unfortunately we are already in the middle of the next crisis," regrets Pernetta, referring, among other things, to the

Edelweiss no longer requires masks

The holiday airline Edelweiss is also no longer requiring its passengers to wear masks with immediate effect. This follows the approach chosen by its sister company Swiss. "Mask-free" flights are currently only possible if there is no official order from the destination country requiring the wearing of mouth and nose protection or FFP2 masks. Austria and Germany, for example, explicitly require this. More and more airlines are refraining from forcing their passengers to wear masks wherever possible. Most recently, Swiss and Wizz Air, among others, lifted this requirement, but only if there is no other regulation from the authorities in the destination or country of origin.

AUA recorded 690.000 bookings in the last two weeks

Around 58.000 passengers on Holy Weekend alone: Austrian Airlines recorded a major travel peak at Easter after more than two years of pandemic. Classic warm-water destinations in Cyprus, Sicily and Spain were particularly in demand, but also city trips to London, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Nice and Barcelona. For the Easter holidays alone, Austrian Airlines reported a massive increase in bookings of up to 380 percent compared to the same period last year. With 690.000 new bookings in the last two weeks of March, it also shows that bookings are being made for longer periods compared to 2021. The booking curve for the upcoming summer months would rise steeply. The Lufthansa subsidiary is reacting to this positive development in travel behavior and is now not only flying with its entire fleet, but is also offering a 20 percent larger range of flights to European holiday destinations in the summer than before the corona pandemic. The red-white-red airline flies up to three times a day from Vienna to Palma de Mallorca. At the beginning of summer, connections to Valencia, Kavala and Samos will be reinstated. "After more than two years, there is a massive backlog of demand. The upward trend proves that Austrian is convincing with an attractive offer and genuine Austrian hospitality on board," says Austrian Airlines CCO Michael Trestl.

Romania: Hisky enters domestic business

The airline Hisky will enter the Romanian domestic market at the beginning of May 2022. So far, the carrier has only offered international flights - mainly from Iasi. This will change on May 9, 2022, when it will fly from Bucharest to Cluj and Timișoara. An Airbus A320 from Hisky is already standing around at the Romanian airport in Cluj. The engines are still covered. From May 9, 2022, this airline plans to fly ten times a week between the capital and Cluj. Between Monday and Friday, flights will be operated twice a day. They also plan to connect Timișoara with Bucharest. The planned frequencies are identical, but they will also match up with the low-cost airline Ryanair. It remains to be seen whether the Romanian domestic market offers enough potential for two low-cost airlines on this route. In the past, Blue Air domestic has had little success.

Eurowings drives back inner-German “race routes”.

Demand for domestic air traffic in Germany appears to be below expectations. Eurowings is also reducing the frequency of domestic German flights to/from Berlin-Brandenburg for May 2022. The carrier actually planned to fly to the capital up to 12 times a day from Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart. This will not happen - at least for the time being, because the company decided to operate fewer flights. During the week, the airline will also fly a maximum of six times a day from/to Berlin in May 2022. In the past, competitor Easyjet flew Stuttgart-Berlin, for example. This route was added as part of the takeover of Air Berlin assets. The airline has now completely withdrawn from Baden-Württemberg's largest airport. The other domestic German routes are running on a reduced flame and have been suspended repeatedly and in some cases for a very long time since the start of the pandemic.
