Malta offshoot: Wizz Air Group does not want to be seen in the cards

Following the Ryanair Group, Eurowings and numerous other airlines, Wizz Air will also be operating with a Maltese airline in the future. However, there are differences compared to its competitors. While Malta Air and Lauda Europe, for example, have a Maltese AOC and the new Eurowings Europe is also aiming for one, Wizz Air Malta will have a so-called EASA-AOC. However, the company wants to apply for the operating license from the Maltese CAD. Wizz Air Hungary already flies not with a Hungarian AOC, but with an EASA-AOC. It was the first airline in Europe to be issued with such an air operator's certificate. However, the Wizz Air Group is still very tight-lipped about what it actually plans to do with the Malta branch. The first focus is on setting up the new airline, the group said when asked. In particular, the company did not want to answer the question of whether Wizz Air Hungary will be closed in favor of Wizz Air Malta. It would be absolutely no surprise if Wizz Air Hungary were to be "re-flagged" following the example of Lauda Europe, Malta Air and Eurowings Europe. However, the carrier does not want to comment on this. The Wizz Air Group also did not comment on the possible Airbus A321XLR operation. A spokeswoman told Aviation.Direct, among other things: "The successful establishment of Wizz Air Malta later this year will help to further consolidate our strong position and support our expansion plans in Europe. At this point in time, we cannot give concrete answers to these questions as the details are still being developed. We look forward to

Johann Spreitzhofer becomes the new chairman of the WKÖ specialist association for the hotel industry

The Hotel Industry Association in the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKÖ) is getting a new chairman. The Styrian hotelier Johann Spreitzhofer succeeds Susanne Kraus-Winkler, who represented the interests of Austrian accommodation companies in the WKÖ for three and a half years and joined the government last week as the new State Secretary for Tourism. "I would like to thank Susanne Kraus-Winkler, who - especially during the challenging times of the pandemic - fought with great commitment and passion for the concerns of the Austrian hotel industry. With her, our 16.000 accommodation companies have a strong voice in the government and I look forward to our continued, successful cooperation - in the interests of domestic accommodation companies," emphasizes Spreitzhofer. The designated hotel industry chairman sees the greatest challenges for the accommodation industry in the labor market, the stabilization and recapitalization of the industry and the upcoming autumn. Preparations as soon as possible to largely prevent further corona restrictions for companies and to ensure the greatest possible planning security are at the top of Spreitzhofer's agenda. "The Austrian hotel industry is close to my heart, I am a full-blooded hotelier. Having grown up in this beautiful tourism country, I know the operational practices and the challenges that the industry faces. In my new role, I look forward to supporting companies and their employees and developing solutions to the greatest challenges," Spreitzhofer concluded.

Vienna Airport presents new panels at PaN Square

Since 2007, the umbrella organization of all Austrian-foreign societies – the PaN (Partner of all Nations) – has been the namesake of the forecourt and roundabout at the VIP and General Aviation Terminal at Vienna Airport. The square and the access road have now been redesigned and the signage modernized. The umbrella organization of all Austrian-foreign societies – PaN (Partner of all Nations) – was founded after the end of the Second World War with the aim of creating the densest possible network of international understanding and cooperation. As a “silent diplomat”, the umbrella organization works for international friendship, the development of a peaceful society and unbiased dialogue between nations, cultures and denominations. The importance of the international unifying activities of the PaN umbrella organization is documented in the prominent honorary positions held. The Federal President acts as patron, the respective President of the National Council and the Federal Council together form the Honorary Presidium and all nine state governors form the Honorary Board of Trustees. “PaN Square” at the VIP and General Aviation Terminal since 2007 As a sign of recognition of this international commitment, the forecourt and roundabout in front of the VIP and General Aviation Terminal were named “PaN Square” on October 17, 2007. The information boards that have been there since then have now been modernized and unveiled on May 12, 2022 in the presence of Vienna Airport Board Members Julian Jäger and Günther Ofner, as well as PaN President Hermann Mückler, PaN Secretary General Walter J. Gerbautz and Vienna Aircraft Handling Managing Directors Michael Zach and Christoph Schmidt.

Greece issues entry ban on popular island

In the summer months, whole streams of holidaymakers used to visit the small island of Chrissi south of Crete. But that is now to end - for the sake of nature. The small offshore island of Chrissi has been closed to visitors by the authorities so that the island's badly damaged nature can recover. In recent years, around 200.000 tourists have come every year to visit, among other things, the famous cedar forest on Chrissi. As the tourist portal Reise vor 9 reports, the uninhabited islet around 15 kilometers off Crete has previously been extremely popular with day trippers thanks to its pristine nature. For the time being, however, guests are only allowed to view the interior of the island from a distance: tourist and charter boats are now prohibited from docking at Chrissi. Bathers can still swim from the boats to the beach and stay there, but they can no longer enter the interior of the island and the cedar forests. The cause is humans: the summer residents, who according to the authorities live in tents and self-built huts and have even built makeshift taverns, tap into the groundwater, which the plants later lack. They create rubbish and have even brought vehicles to the island. In addition, people have wandered into the interior of the island, destroying the young plants that could provide new vegetation. Some people have apparently even brought goats to the island - the animals eat all the small plants they can find. Now the aim is to prevent people from settling on Chrissi again this summer.

Europa League: Frankfurt Airport expects long waiting times on match days

Anyone who has booked a flight at Frankfurt Airport for May 18 must expect delays in operations due to the high volume of passengers. The reason for this is the numerous special flights that will take Eintracht Frankfurt fans to the Europa League final in Seville. For this reason, travelers should plan more time for the journey and at the airport. The Federal Police are expecting 4.500 to 7.500 additional travelers on May 18, who will be on the airport grounds mainly in the morning and early afternoon. Frankfurt Airport and the Federal Police are expecting around 30 to 35 special flights for Eintracht fans, as Check24 reports. For this reason, there may be longer waiting times both on arrival and at check-in and at security checks. Flight delays cannot be ruled out either. "We have a lot of passengers in a very short period of time, which is what makes it a challenge," said Michael Moser, spokesman for the Federal Police. The airport therefore advises passengers to be in the terminal at least two and a half hours before departure and to use the option of checking in the evening before. Those flying to Seville should also check in on the evening of May 17th or online and arrive at the airport three to four hours before departure.

Service still in the test phase: Swiss picks up luggage from home

In cooperation with "Airportr", the Swiss carrier is testing a new luggage service. The service provider collects the suitcases of selected Swiss passengers from their homes up to 23 hours before the flight and brings them to Zurich Airport. This is a test run for which passengers are specifically contacted via the newsletter. Whether and when a corresponding offer will be introduced for all passengers from Zurich depends on the success of the test run. The service will then be bookable online and will cost the equivalent of around 37 euros for up to two suitcases, as the travel portal About Travel reports. The luggage will be collected from the home or hotel up to 23 hours before departure, then sealed, transported to the airport and checked in for the flight. The suitcases will then travel alone to the baggage carousel at the destination airport. The offer includes Geneva, London-Heathrow, Berlin-Tegel, Barcelona El Prat, Hamburg, Amsterdam-Schiphol, Düsseldorf and Copenhagen. Zurich is the departure point.

Bremen Airport rehabilitates taxiway A

From May 23 to June 5, taxiway A at Bremen Airport will be renovated. However, this will not affect flight operations. For takeoffs to the east, aircraft will use taxiway C to access the runway, roll along it to the west and make a so-called "backtrack" - and then, after turning on the regular runway, initiate takeoff as usual. Small and medium-sized aircraft will turn directly on the runway, while large aircraft will use the special "West" runway for their backtrack during this time, as they require a larger radius to turn, then roll to the threshold of the regular runway and take off from there. The state aviation authority has approved this procedure and the municipality of Stuhr has also agreed to it.

Wizz Air also establishes Malta branches

Wizz Air is also setting up a Malta branch. The group announced on Tuesday that it had applied for an operating license from the Maltese Civil Aviation Authority TM-CAD. The AOC will continue to be held by EASA. According to Wizz Air, a corresponding "agreement on the reassignment of responsibility" has already been signed between the carrier, CAD and EASA. Subject to confirmation of the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and Air Operator Certificate (OL) by EASA and CAD, Wizz Air Malta can start operations with aircraft registered in Malta in October 2022. "We are pleased to announce our intention to establish a new subsidiary in Malta. Wizz Air is constantly evaluating the structure of its business and exploring options for establishing new AOCs and bases in Europe and beyond. The successful establishment of Wizz Air Malta later this year will help to further consolidate our strong position and support our expansion plans in Europe. We look forward to working with EASA and the Maltese CAA to move this application forward,” said CEO Jozsef Varadi. Patrick Ky, Executive Director of EASA, said: “This is a new step in the already well-established cooperation between the Agency, the Malta Civil Aviation Authority and Wizz Air. This new constellation, where one group operates multiple Air Operator Certificates based in different Member States but supervised by the same competent authority, shows the opportunities created by transferring responsibilities to EASA. We look forward to working together on the issuance of this brand new Air Operator Certificate and the

Sardinia: Tips for summer holidays in the “Caribbean of Europe”

Sardinia is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. Crystal-clear water, beautiful beaches and a picturesque landscape magically attract visitors. But it's not just the sea that attracts visitors: the rocky mountains, charming villages, impressive landscapes and the lively capital Cagliari also form the unique backdrop of the Mediterranean island. Aviation.Direct spoke to Sardinia expert and travel agency owner Andreas Kröll about the Italian island and received some valuable tips and insider knowledge. Andreas Kröll, managing director of Christophorus Reisen, has over 25 years of experience with the so-called "Caribbean of Europe" and has corresponding insider knowledge at hand. Why is Sardinia called "the Caribbean of Europe"? Sardinia is not called the "Caribbean of Europe" for no reason; anyone who has ever been there will confirm that this title is definitely justified. The bright sandy beaches and the water that sparkles turquoise in the sun and lets you see all the way to the seabed are typical of the island, but also typically Caribbean. If a Caribbean holiday is too expensive for you, you can also get a Caribbean feeling on the Mediterranean. Which beaches should you not miss? It is difficult to choose because there are so many beautiful beaches in Sardinia, but some of my favorite places are the Spiaggia Capriccioli on the Costa Smeralda, where you will find emerald green sea, and the fine sandy beaches of the Costa Rei, aptly known as the Royal Coast. Magnificent rock groups and white, fine sandy beaches alternate here. The herbal scent of the typical regional macchia gives this area its very special flair. Here you can surf and dive, for example. The rocky cape of Capo

Condor sends A330 on long-haul routes and gets new CFO

On Sunday, the German holiday airline Condor operated its first long-haul flight with the Airbus A330-200 aircraft, the D-AIYC. The aircraft took off from Frankfurt Airport at around 15:00 p.m., bound for Seattle. Until now, Condor had used the Airbus A330 aircraft, which were previously used by Etihad Airways, on short and medium-haul routes. The long-haul jets with the registration numbers D-AIYB, D-AIYC and D-AIYD will also be used to fly to Palma de Mallorca. The three A330-200s, which according to current planning will remain in the fleet for two years, will be used intercontinentally to fly to Seattle, Toronto and Punta Cana. The Boeing 767 and the A330-200 will gradually be replaced by brand new A330neos. In contrast to the cabin of the new A330neo, which will be operated in a three-class configuration, guests on board the A330-200 can expect a two-class configuration. Aviation.Direct has presented what Condor offers passengers on board this aircraft type in the Trip Reports section. The report with many photos can be found under this link. From the end of May, inflight entertainment will also be available on board. Until then, all guests can alternatively stream free of charge via the Condor FlyStream WiFi in-flight entertainment program. Guests who would like to enjoy in-flight entertainment during the flight in May are therefore encouraged to bring a mobile device on board for streaming. In the summer of last year, Condor announced the order for 16 A330-900neo long-haul aircraft, making it the first German customer to rely on the latest technology, maximum efficiency and the highest level of customer comfort. The first aircraft is expected in October 2022, from then on
