Many sick leave: Easyjet has to cancel many Berlin flights again

Things are not going well at all for Easyjet at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport. The carrier had to cancel many flights again on Saturday. What's interesting is that due to the Whitsun holidays, almost all of the affected connections were very well booked, many even overbooked. Instead of going on holiday, Easyjet passengers on flights EJU4541 (Nice), EJU5531 (Paris-Orly), EJU5681 (Copenhagen), EJU5701 (Rome-Fiumicino), EZY6238 (Bristol), EJU5923 (Fuerteventura), EJU5833 (Tel Aviv), EJU5007 (ibiza), EJU5603 (Dubrovnik) and EJU8214 (London-Gatwick) at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport were told of the cancellations on Saturday. Those affected criticized Aviation.Direct for only handing out an information flyer and for asking passengers to contact the call center for rebookings or to make these themselves online or via the app. According to passenger information, neither alternative transport nor support services were offered on site. Berlin is said to be "the least profitable" Just a few days ago it was announced that Easyjet intends to significantly reduce the size of its Berlin-Brandenburg base. In this context, 275 jobs are to be cut. A round of talks with the Verdi union planned for Monday was canceled at short notice. It is also about money, because salaries have not been increased for three years. Employee representatives believe that a 2,2 percent increase offered by Easyjet next year and a one-off payment of 1.500 euros is too little. No improved offer has been received so far, which is why Verdi members have already been informed of a possible warning strike. In an internal circular, Germany boss Stephan Erler describes the Berlin location as the one that is said to be the least profitable in the entire route network. The reduction is intended to help ensure that this can be preserved.

Tense financial situation: Investors want to buy SAS

The airline SAS was already struggling before the Corona crisis, but the pandemic worsened the carrier's financial situation. Just a few weeks ago, company boss Anko van der Werff publicly announced that the company was fighting for survival. Now investors from abroad are said to be interested in a takeover. SAS says it needs a further capital injection of around 969 million US dollars. According to a report in the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Industri, a consortium of investors is trying to buy the ailing airline. The paper writes, among other things, that implementation would also depend on the cost base and "far-reaching restructuring of the mountain of debt". SAS must also fulfill the restructuring plan that has already been initiated. For the time being, the potential buyers want to remain anonymous. The paper only writes that they are said to be financial institutions based outside Sweden. Financial situation massively strained SAS published the results of the second quarter of the current financial year on May 31, 2022. They warned of serious problems if they were unable to convert two billion US dollars of debt and hybrid bonds into equity. They also need around 969 million US dollars of fresh financing. The measures taken so far have only brought "limited progress". "In the event that the expected burden sharing, debt conversion and new capital raising are not carried out as planned, SAS will not be able to maintain its existing capital structure and current liquidity levels, and it cannot be ruled out that SAS will no longer be able to meet its obligations as they fall due in the longer term," SAS said in a statement on the financial results.

Ryanair had more passengers in May 2022 than “before Corona”

The Irish Ryanair Group carried around 2022 million passengers in May 15,4. This was 756 percent higher than the volume in the same month last year. Capacity utilization improved by 13 percentage points to 92 percent. In the first five months of the current year, Ryanair's airlines have had 123,9 million passengers on board so far. In direct comparison with the same period last year, the figure improved by 310 percent. Capacity utilization climbed by 12 percentage points to 84 percent. In May 2022, Ryanair was able to exceed the transport performance it had before the pandemic, i.e. in May 2019. At that time, it had 14,1 million passengers. If we look at the first five months of the current year, we are still below the comparable figure from 2019. This is also due to the fact that the calendar months of January and February 2022 in particular were affected by the political scaremongering surrounding Omikron.

9H-AHUB: Condor lets Airhub-A340 fly as “Mallorca Shuttle”

The German holiday airline Condor is experiencing particularly high demand for flights to Palma de Mallorca over Pentecost. As a result, an Airbus A9-340, the 313H-AHUB, was wet-leased at short notice. The operator of this long-haul aircraft is the Maltese Airhub Airlines, which only recently added this aircraft to its fleet. The 9H-AHUB was transferred to Frankfurt am Main on June 2, 2022 and was used for Condor on the way to Palma de Mallorca on Friday. A spokeswoman for the German holiday airline confirmed to Aviation.Direct that Airhub Airlines had been wet-leased with an Airbus A340-313. The long-haul aircraft will be used on Condor routes between Germany and Palma de Mallorca over Pentecost. The reason for this is that the use of the widebody is increasing capacity due to high demand.
