Volocopter's four-seater aircraft completes its maiden flight

VoloConnect, the electric passenger air taxi with wings, successfully completed its maiden flight in May 2022. This makes Volocopter the world's only developer of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOLs) with a fleet of different aircraft configurations in the test flight phase. The prototype completed its maiden flight in May 2022 after only 17 months of development and performed various flight maneuvers for 2 minutes and 14 seconds on its maiden flight. VoloConnect is Volocopter's third aircraft and, with a range of more than 100 km and flight speeds of over 250 km/h, complements the existing family of Volocopter aircraft. The longer range and higher payload of the VoloConnect open up the market segment from the city to the suburbs and beyond for the UAM pioneer. The commercial launch of the VoloConnect is planned for 2026 and the VoloCity as early as 2024. "Having a whole family of electric aircraft in the test flight phase is a pioneering achievement," says Florian Reuter, CEO of Volocopter. "Volocopter's leadership in the industry is based on announcing plans and then implementing them through public test flights. Our technology platform is the foundation for the development of our aircraft and has shown that it can deliver results at an astonishing speed. Volocopter is bringing these innovative designs from the ground into the air, and then into cities around the world!"

Malta removes CoV entry restrictions for children under the age of twelve

Malta has simplified entry regulations - at least for some holidaymakers. All children under the age of twelve are allowed to enter the island state in the Mediterranean without proof of corona. According to Visit Malta, the island state's official tourism website, children under the age of twelve have been allowed to enter without restrictions since June 6. However, all holidaymakers who have reached the age of twelve still have to present 3G proof to enter the country. Certificates of full vaccination against COVID-19 must be between 14 and 270 days old, after which a booster dose is required to be considered vaccinated. Those who have recovered are allowed to enter up to 180 days after the first positive PCR test. Those who have neither been vaccinated nor recovered must present an antigen test in English that is no more than 24 hours old or a PCR test that is no more than 72 hours old. Antigen tests must be stored in an official corona app of an EU member state. Anyone entering Malta without proof must undergo a PCR test at the airport at their own expense and then go to a prescribed quarantine accommodation for ten days. The isolation can be ended after seven days at the earliest with a negative test.

Hamburg Airport counts 1 million passengers per month again for the first time

New passenger record since the start of the pandemic: In May, more than 1 million passengers used Hamburg Airport for the first time in just one month. In May, around 1,1 million arriving and departing passengers used Hamburg Airport - that's 68 percent more than in 2019. Compared to the previous year, which was much more severely affected by travel restrictions, traffic volumes have almost quadrupled. This sharp increase in demand was particularly evident on the Ascension weekend and the May holidays in Hamburg, when up to 45.000 passengers used the airport every day. Many travelers were drawn to classic holiday destinations such as Mallorca, Greece, Turkey or the Canary Islands. From January to May 2022, Hamburg Airport counted a total of 3,5 million passengers. "May turned out to be the strongest month in over two years. Demand has increased dramatically in the last two months. After the long travel break, we can once again offer our passengers a choice of 115 different flight destinations. This diversity also attracts many northern Germans from the neighboring federal states," says Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport. The sharp increase in demand is posing major challenges for air traffic across Europe, Eggenschwiler continues. "The main focus is on the difficult personnel planning and recruitment. We and our partners at the site are preparing as best as possible for the coming weeks, in which we expect to continue to have many passengers. However, we cannot rule out the possibility of delays and irregularities. Therefore, our recommendation to all passengers is to allow significantly more time than usual and to

Air Algérie found two bodies in the hold

On Saturday, ramp staff at Algiers airport made a gruesome discovery: the bodies of two young men were found in the cargo hold. The police said that they were between 20 and 23 years old. The bodies were found on Saturday at around 5:00 a.m. local time in an Air Algérie plane parked on the apron. The police assume that the two were trying to escape to Europe as stowaways. The attempt was unsuccessful and cost the young men their lives. It happens again and again that refugees try to fly as stowaways in cargo holds or even in the landing gear bay. This is life-threatening and is also the reason why such escape maneuvers often end in death.

After Palma and Rhodes: Condor deploys fourth A330-200

The German holiday airline Condor put the fourth Airbus A330-200 into active scheduled service on Saturday. The D-AIYA was initially used between Frankfurt am Main and Palma de Mallorca. The partial fleet, which serves as interim preparation for the Airbus A330neo aircraft, which is to be introduced into the fleet from autumn 2022, has now grown to four units. These were previously used by Etihad Airways and have the registrations D-AIYA, D-AIYB, D-AIYC and D-AIYD. The new addition was transferred from Abu Dhabi to Frankfurt on June 2, 2022. Condor has been using this long-haul aircraft commercially since June 4, 2022. Over the Whitsun weekend, this aircraft flew to Rhodes and Palma de Mallorca, among other places. An Airbus A340 operated by the Maltese Airhub Airlines was also used on Mallorca flights over the busy weekend.

Aeroflot: Court in Sri Lanka clears controversial A330

On Monday, June 6, 2022, the Colombo High Commercial Court lifted the seizure of an Airbus A330 used by Aeroflot, which had previously been ordered by another court. The official reason is a formal error, because the carrier was not served with the interim injunction. The application to lift the injunction was filed by the Attorney General at the instigation of the government. The Colombo Commercial High Court dealt with the matter on Monday and released the aircraft due to a formal error. Celestial Aviation Trading Limited had obtained an interim injunction a few days ago, which meant that the return flight from Colombo to Moscow could not be carried out. The aircraft was chained up for the time being. The lessor is of the opinion that Aeroflot had illegally transferred the long-haul aircraft to the RA register and would not return it despite terminating the leasing contract. Following the court order, according to local media reports, pressure was exerted on the Sri Lankan government by the Russian side. Among other things, there were warnings that diplomatic relations could be affected if the matter was not resolved in Aeroflot's favor. So far, leasing companies have been able to have 78 aircraft that were in use by Russian carriers confiscated. However, the vast majority of them were confiscated in the first few days of the sanctions, since since then such aircraft have only been flown to countries where confiscation is considered unlikely.

Training deficiencies: India bans 90 Spicejet Boeing 737 Max pilots

The Indian Civil Aviation Authority has ordered that 90 Spicejet pilots are no longer allowed to fly on the Boeing 737 Max aircraft for the time being. The reason for this is that a defective simulator was used during training. From the DGCA's point of view, the airline did not adequately comply with the request for further training, which was ordered in April 2022. The carrier has already received a fine for using a defective simulator. Spicejet confirmed that, by order of the Civil Aviation Authority, 90 pilots are not allowed to fly again until their training has been approved by the DGCA. The company does not believe that this will lead to restrictions in flight operations. The company points out that it has a total of 650 pilots trained for the Boeing 737 Max and only 90 have to wait for their clearances.
