Canada is pausing random testing upon entry

Canada will no longer carry out random tests on entry for the time being. When entering Canada, the practice of randomly testing vaccinated international passengers on arrival in the country will be paused with immediate effect. The Canadian government has decided to suspend the random tests until June 30th - during this time, further corona measures will be discussed again. This is reported by the Swiss travel portal About Travel. However, unvaccinated visitors to the country will still be tested. Currently, this is still done directly at the airport, but it is to be done outside the airport grounds by July 1st. By then, further measures or relaxations for entry into the country are also to be decided. The background to the tests is to detect new variants at an early stage. Since most new pathogens are brought into the country by tourists, the random tests were seen as an opportunity to determine the course of the virus. However, these sometimes led to long waiting times.

Just before the holidays: Spanish unions call for a strike at Ryanair

The low-cost airline Ryanair is facing a strike lasting several days in Spain just before the peak season. The unions USO and SITCPLA are jointly calling for a work stoppage and are demanding in a statement that "humane working conditions for all staff" be created. Another reason for this is that, according to employee representatives, the Ryanair Group in Spain does not have a collective agreement for local staff. Although an agreement was reached with a small union, USO and ITCPLA do not recognize it and are also of the opinion that it would violate Spanish labor law. The airline counters that the collective agreement has brought improvements for Spanish staff. The strike call covers the period from June 24 to July 2, 2022. The Ryanair Group has numerous bases in Spain, which are operated by Ryanair DAC, Malta Air and Lauda Europe. The latter carrier is facing the first flight attendant strike in the company's history in July 2022. USO intends to call for this if management does not respond to the demands of the employee representatives. If the announced strikes are not called off, Ryanair Group passengers from/to Spain must expect significant delays and cancellations. Travelers should therefore regularly check the current status of their booking.

Swiss extends pick-up service to Zurich Airport

Following a successful test phase of the Smart Baggage service at Geneva Airport, the Swiss carrier is expanding its partnership with AirPortr to Zurich Airport and offering the service throughout Switzerland. The baggage service has been available to customers from Geneva Airport in a test phase since October last year. Travelers departing or arriving at Zurich Airport can now also use the service to collect and check in their baggage or have it delivered to their home or hotel. The service can be booked at www.swiss.com. The price for the AirPortr service depends on the pick-up and delivery location and ranges from CHF 39.00 for two pieces of baggage in Zurich to CHF 69.00 in areas further away from the airport. Baggage is collected from home or accommodation up to 23 hours before departure - passengers only need to check in online. The boarding pass is checked upon collection, then the baggage is sealed to ensure safe transport to the departure airport, where it undergoes the usual security checks. After landing, the suitcases are picked up from the baggage carousel as usual. This is intended to save time. "After the successful start of our partnership with AirPortr, we can now further optimize the travel experience for our guests. Australian fund makes mandatory offer for Flughafen Wien shares

Airports Group Europe has bought more shares in Vienna-Schwechat Airport and increased its stake to 40 percent. The Australian fund is legally obliged under Austrian law to make a takeover offer, "however, we are not seeking majority control of the company," the infrastructure investment fund said in a press release. Specifically, the fund recently bought more shares in the airport through its subsidiary Airports Group Europe. With the 40 percent threshold exceeded, the mandatory takeover offer has now become effective. It is considered very unlikely that the Australian fund could actually take over the majority of the shares. The press release states that it is not expected that the City of Vienna, the State of Lower Austria and the employees who hold shares through a foundation will sell. Vienna and Lower Austria each hold 20 percent of Vienna-Schwechat Airport (Bruck/Leitha district), ten percent are owned by the employee participation private foundation and a further ten percent are in free float. Lower Austria, Vienna and staff together hold 50 percent of the shares. Shares soared after the offer Airports Group Europe is offering to buy the shares for 33 euros each. This means that the offer is significantly higher than the most recent value traded on the stock exchange. On Monday morning, the shares were still trading for around 26 euros. After the takeover offer, the share price soared and broke the 32 euro threshold on Monday morning. Airports Group is a subsidiary of the IFM Global Infrastructure Fund, which invests for Australian pension funds, among others. In the airport's 2021 annual report, the fund last had shares in the airport in

Nine-euro ticket: First railway operator bans bicycles

The "nine-euro ticket", which is being offered in Germany for an initial period of three months, is causing very high utilisation of regional public transport in many cities - especially at weekends. Now a regional operator is prohibiting the transport of bicycles due to overcrowding. Metronom Eisenbahngesellschaft, which operates mainly in northern Germany, announced on Friday that bicycles can no longer be taken on some routes. The company cited the fact that the demand for the nine-euro ticket is so great that there is no room for the bicycles. In addition, the route network operator is carrying out construction work in several places, which can lead to delays. Bicycles are not allowed on the Göttingen-Hannover-Uelzen (RE2) route and on the line between Hamburg and Bremen (RE4/RB41) on weekends. The ban begins every Friday at 15:00 p.m. and ends on Sundays at 22:00 p.m. This is also a response to the fact that the nine-euro ticket is also often used for day trips. The route between Uelzen and Hamburg (RE2/RB31) is also affected. Bicycles have generally been banned on this route since June 10, 2022. The reason given is that the construction work carried out by rail operator DB Netz would make this impossible until further notice. Metronom Bahngesellschaft is aware that the measure will annoy many nine-euro ticket holders who want to go on bicycle trips. However, it points to the high occupancy of the trains and explains that it has decided to transport passengers rather than bicycles.

The Italian shipping company Costa has abolished the mask requirement that was previously in place on board cruise ships with immediate effect. The company announced, among other things, that "life on board would no longer be subject to any restrictions". All on-board facilities are open and can be used without a mask. Shore excursions can again be undertaken individually, although the shipping company points out that any country-specific regulations must be observed. However, it remains the case that only fully vaccinated and recovered people are allowed on board. The only exceptions to this are children under 12 years of age. In addition, a negative antigen or PCR result, which must be no more than 48 hours old, must still be presented upon boarding. Spanish Pilots' Union considers strike during peak voyages

The Spanish air traffic controllers' union Unión Sindical de Controladores Aéreos is now thinking aloud about a possible strike. At the end of June 2022, a decision will be made as to whether there will be a work stoppage. The background to this is that the employee representatives believe that there is an acute shortage of staff and that the existing workforce is massively overburdened. The control centers affected are Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Gran Canaria and Palma. At the end of June 2022, the union wants to decide whether or not to call air traffic controllers to strike in July 2022, i.e. during the peak travel season. If the industrial action measure is decided upon, massive restrictions on air traffic are to be expected.
