Fraport sets the course for 5G at Frankfurt Airport

At Frankfurt Airport, the operator Fraport is building a private 5G digital radio network together with the Dutch IT service provider NTT. "The new network will not only speed up work processes at Fraport, but will also benefit numerous companies at the site," explains Fraport IT Manager Wolfgang Standhaft. Compared to its predecessors, the 5G mobile communications standard enables a significantly higher data rate with shorter delay times. This is a prerequisite for real-time applications. Fraport cites the use of autonomous vehicles on the apron or the video-supported control of airport facilities by robots or drones as examples. The technology is to be tested on a small part of the airport this summer. From next year, the network infrastructure will then be expanded across the entire airport site, which covers more than 20 square kilometers, and opened up to partner companies. "For us as an airport operator, operating an independent mobile communications network is a milestone. We are thus setting the strategic course that will enable us to make airport operations even more efficient in the future through innovation and digitalization," Standhaft continues. “With NTT we have a strong and experienced partner at our side with whom we will test the new technology and develop application examples.”

MUC: Cheaper parking rates during the summer holidays

Booking parking spaces online in advance brings advantages for passengers at Munich Airport. During the summer months, there is a "holiday special" until September 19, 2022: For a parking period of seven days or more, parking a vehicle in the parking garages near the terminal costs 112 euros for a week. In the so-called economy parking spaces within the airport grounds, the week can be booked from 48 euros, including an MVV ticket for the journey from the parking lot to the terminal and back. A total of around 32.000 parking spaces are available not far from the terminal buildings or in the other parking areas within the airport grounds. Advance booking is possible with all common credit cards and via PayPal. Entry and exit is via mobile phone with a QR code. A tip for passengers who are being taken to the departure airport or picked up at the arrivals level: In the short-stay areas, the first five minutes are free when departing (Kiss & Fly), and the first ten minutes are free when arriving (Kiss & Ride). For longer parking times, 15 euros are charged for every 2,50 minutes. For longer waiting times, FMG therefore recommends using the surrounding underground car parks. Here, parking costs six euros for every hour or part thereof. During the summer holidays, the airport says it handles more than 100.000 passengers every day. Many of them come to the airport in their own cars. Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) therefore recommends booking a parking space in advance at https://www.munich-airport.de/parken.

Air Baltic introduces Business Light Class

The Latvian airline has introduced a new ticket class - Business Light. The new tickets cost almost 100 euros less than the classic business class. If you don't want to spend so much money but don't want to fly economy, you can now opt for Business Light tickets. Air Baltic is introducing the new booking class and promises to offer passengers a complete business class experience at a cheaper price. A seasonal three-course menu will be served on board, including a generous selection of drinks. Business Light passengers have access to a separate check-in counter, including entry to the business lounge. In addition, additional luggage can be taken in the aircraft cabin and as checked luggage. Since this offer is a cheaper alternative to classic business class tickets, customers still have to make compromises: changes to plans can incur a fee and refunds are not possible. "As an innovative airline, we are always striving to revise our products to meet the changing needs of our customers. The newly introduced booking class offers passengers all the services traditionally associated with Business Class - with only a few compromises. This will increase our competitiveness on the European aviation market. We assume that the offer will also be popular with leisure travelers," said airline boss Martin Gauss.

Lufthansa Group is back in the black

The Lufthansa Group says it returned to the black in the second quarter of 2022. Based on preliminary and as yet unaudited figures, the group announced that group revenue had almost doubled in direct comparison with the same period last year and amounted to around 8,5 billion euros. The Group's adjusted EBIT was between 350 and 400 million euros (previous year: -827 million euros). The Group benefited in particular from continued strong development at Lufthansa Cargo. Lufthansa Technik achieved a similarly high result as in the first quarter. The result of the passenger airlines improved mainly due to a strong increase in average yields and significantly higher load factors. Capacity utilization was very high, especially in the premium classes. However, despite a positive result at SWISS, the adjusted EBIT of the passenger airlines segment remained negative. Mainly due to the operating profit and the continued strong booking demand, the Lufthansa Group achieved a significantly positive adjusted free cash flow in the second quarter. On a preliminary and unaudited basis, this was around EUR 2 billion (previous year: EUR 382 million). Net debt is therefore expected to decline by a similar amount in the second quarter (March 31, 2022: EUR 8,3 billion). The Group will present its final quarterly results on August 4, 2022.

Due to a lack of staff: Frankfurt has to further reduce capacity

Germany's largest airport, Frankfurt am Main, wants to reduce capacity further. A corresponding application is to be submitted to air traffic control next week, which will result in the reduction of the maximum number of flight movements. Lufthansa welcomed the plan in a press release. Operator Fraport explained, among other things, that the aim of this measure is to stabilize flight operations. In an initial measure, the so-called coordination threshold was already reduced from 106 to 96 flight movements per hour. Now the number of take-offs and landings is to be reduced as soon as possible to 88. The aim is to handle fewer aircraft, especially during rush hours. Due to an acute shortage of staff, which cannot be resolved at short notice, bottlenecks regularly occur. This means that planes in Frankfurt are delayed because there is no staff available for loading and unloading or other services. There are also often long waiting times at security checks. Furthermore, Fraport AG wants to ensure that other airlines, in addition to Lufthansa, significantly reduce their services and also shift some flights to the less used off-peak times. The crane group has already canceled more than 6.000 flights from Munich and Frankfurt that were planned for July and August 2022. The trend is increasing, as it was only this week that it was announced that the red pen had been used again. For status, first and business class customers, using Frankfurt am Main Airport can also be associated with inconveniences, as Fraport AG will temporarily no longer offer a security fast lane. This step is justified, among other things, by the fact that it will ease the tense situation.

Analysis: Parking costs at Germany's airports have risen sharply

Many German airports have increased the cost of parking vehicles in the car parks, in some cases significantly, compared to the previous year. This is the conclusion of an analysis carried out by the Berlin/Brandenburg consumer protection association. Parking at airports has never been a cheap affair. There have always been significant price differences, because at some airports parking cars is almost a bargain compared to others. In other places, the price is really high. According to the consumer protection association, the cheapest parking space costs an average of 54 euros per week. Last year, this figure was 42 euros per week. The average cost of the most expensive parking spaces, which are usually very close to the entrance, has also increased significantly. Last year, passengers had to shell out an average of 143 euros per week, and now it is a whopping 177 euros. As already mentioned, the differences between German airports are enormous. According to the consumer protection organization, you can park close to the terminal in Dresden and Leipzig/Halle for as little as 15 euros per week. This is the cheapest offer that was found in the survey. For comparison: In Dortmund, this costs a whopping 99 euros per week. Hamburg is a little cheaper at 89 euros and Munich at 87 euros. In Cologne/Bonn, you can save money if you book your parking space online in advance. In the cheapest case, you can park your vehicle for 29 euros per week. But it gets really expensive if you spend an hour in the “Kiss&Fly area” in front of the terminal:

Saudi Arabia opens airspace for Carrie out of Israel

The governments of Israel and Saudi Arabia have agreed that the airspace can be used in the future. This is particularly advantageous for El Al, as the carrier is spared the detours that were previously common. For decades, Saudi Arabia's airspace was off-limits to airlines from Israel. This also applied to that of the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Bahrain. The political thaw of recent years has led to massive relaxations. Saudi Arabia agreed two years ago that a special corridor could be used for all flights to/from Bahrain and the UAE. Now, from the perspective of Israel's carriers, another breakthrough has been achieved: Saudi Arabia is opening up its airspace in general. For example, El Al is now saving itself time-consuming detours because it is allowed to fly directly over the kingdom. In recent years, Jordan, the UAE and Bahrain, among others, have already opened up their airspace. The political thaw has also led to the establishment of new flight connections between the countries with which it has reached an agreement and Israel.

Water shortage: Gatwick can only operate a few toilets

Anyone who needs to go to the toilet at London Gatwick Airport is currently facing a problem, as many toilet facilities are out of order. In one of the two terminals there are only two toilets available. Many restaurants are also currently only able to operate to a limited extent. The second largest airport in the British capital London is currently suffering from an acute water shortage. The reason for this is that a water pipe has burst due to low pressure. In order to at least alleviate the consequences a little, the airport is having water delivered by tanker truck. The problem occurred on Thursday afternoon and has serious consequences for pretty much everything that depends on a functioning water supply. For example, restaurants can only offer food and drinks to a limited extent. Some restaurants have even decided to close until the problems are resolved. What is likely to be much more unpleasant for passengers is that many toilet facilities cannot be operated due to a lack of water. The airport has managed to keep a few toilets open, but there are only two available in one of the two terminals. Accordingly, longer waiting times can be expected before going to the bathroom. A Gatwick Airport spokesperson said: "An issue with the water supply to SES Water in Gatwick and the surrounding area has resulted in lower than normal water pressure throughout the airport this morning. We are working closely with SES Water to ensure this issue is resolved as quickly as possible. Bottled water is being made available for passengers and airport staff, and
