Taiwan makes entry easier

After Japan and Korea, another Far Eastern country is making entry easier for tourists: From September 12, 2022, Taiwan will lift the visa requirement introduced for Corona. According to the online portal fvw, this step was announced by the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC). The visa exemption applies to nationals of European countries, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Taiwan's diplomatic allies. This refers to the states that recognize Taiwan as an independent state and maintain official diplomatic contacts. According to the CECC, the aim is to "meet international trends and strike a balance between the needs of epidemic prevention and the promotion of economic and social activities." However, the step is by no means set in stone. All border measures and relevant epidemic prevention measures will be continuously adjusted depending on the development of the pandemic situation. However, group tourist trips are still not possible. Furthermore, all travelers to Taiwan, regardless of their nationality or country of origin, must spend three days in isolation after entry, followed by four days of stricter self-monitoring. If it is necessary to leave the accommodation, a rapid test is required, and contacts should be kept to a minimum. Otherwise, quarantine must take place in a quarantine accommodation (hotel) designated by the government. Isolation in the quarantine hotel must take place in a single room. The traveler must bear the costs of both any Covid-19 tests and any Covid-19 treatment. Another PCR test is mandatory immediately after entry at the airport. The test is organized by the airport staff.

Number of passengers at BER at a constant level

The number of passengers at Berlin Brandenburg Airport remains constant. Last August, 1,94 million passengers took off and landed at BER. This means that the number of passengers handled each month has remained almost the same since May 2022. In August 2021, 1,4 million people used BER. In August of the pre-Corona year 2019, the then Tegel and Schönefeld airports counted 3,2 million passengers, around 40 percent more than in August 2022. A total of 12,6 million people used BER in the first eight months of this year, the capital airport announced in a press release. Last month, 14.800 aircraft took off and landed in the capital region, 400 fewer than in July 2022. In August 2021, 12.600 takeoffs and landings were counted, compared to 2019 in the pre-Corona year 25.000. A total of around 2.600 tonnes of air freight were handled last month, 400 tonnes more than in the same month last year in 2021. In August 2019, the figure was 3.100 tonnes. "The number of our passengers remains at a stable level. During the holidays alone, we welcomed three million passengers at BER. For all summer travel up to the end of August, the processes at our airport were orderly and largely smooth. The long and thorough preparations by the airport company together with all its partners have paid off. I would like to thank the employees for all their efforts and their high level of motivation," said Aletta von Massenbach, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH.

Zeitfracht Group: An Embraer E190 from German Airways will be the brand ambassador for the new delicatessen brand

Leysieffer, a chocolate manufacturer based in Osnabrück, will have a new brand ambassador in November with a German Airways jet. The aircraft will then be present in the chocolate design at airports across Europe. The company recently became part of the Zeitfracht Group. The eye-catching livery is possible because German Airways' fleet is growing by two aircraft this year. Most of the 100-seat Embraer E190s of the second oldest German airline are currently flying for other airlines in Europe and fly on their behalf under what is known as a wet lease. The company said in a press release that which of the aircraft will be the sweet ambassador of the Osnabrück chocolate and delicatessen manufacturer in the future will be decided at short notice. The design was not so easy because Leysieffer's products must be easily recognizable even from a distance. That is why the designers at Zeitfracht's own eCommerce and advertising agency coconad ultimately decided on a few, but larger products. The motifs are stuck onto specially approved films. "Our new design for Leysieffer will be visible in time for the start of the Christmas season. And we are really looking forward to our chocolate Embraer, which will hopefully make many people want to try Leysieffer's sweets," says Maren Wolters, Managing Director of German Airways. Leysieffer has been part of the Zeitfracht Group since mid-September this year. The company's product portfolio includes the manufacture and sale of pralines, chocolates, cakes, tarts, fruit spreads and marzipan. The range also includes products such as coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages.

Romania blocks Blue Air accounts: flight operations largely stopped

The Romanian low-cost airline Blue Air has to largely cease flight operations. The company did not pay a fine imposed by the consumer protection authority. As a result, the court ordered the provisional seizure of bank balances and the blocking of company accounts. The low-cost airline can no longer pay suppliers. According to an official statement from Blue Air, flight operations are to remain suspended until Monday, September 12, 2022. It is hoped that the seizure or account blocking can be lifted by then. The fact that Blue Air's financial situation is very strained has long been an open secret. The carrier has taken a lot of time to refund ticket money for canceled flights. So much so that it has incurred a hefty fine from the consumer protection authority. The carrier was apparently unable to pay the fine of two million euros on time and, according to the authorities, also failed to file a suspensive appeal or to agree to pay in installments. The state agency is therefore now taking the hard line of enforcement. A few days ago, the head of the consumer protection agency ANPC publicly called for a boycott of Blue Air. This brought him some criticism, as the airline countered with a criminal complaint for alleged abuse of office. Regardless of this, the exchange of blows is likely to have had a negative impact on booking numbers. Blue Air has now announced that due to the "unforeseeable situation", all flights planned to/from Romania must be cancelled until September 12, 2022. The reason given was that they cannot pay suppliers due to the account freeze ordered by the authorities.

Lufthansa: VC withdraws strike call

The Lufthansa pilots' strike announced for Wednesday and Thursday has been called off. The "last-minute negotiations" are said to have led to a breakthrough. Both sides are still keeping quiet about the result. It is assumed that details are still being negotiated. The Cockpit Association sent an early signal to the employers' side and withdrew the call for a strike for Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo. In the passenger business, work was to be stopped for two days starting tomorrow and for Lufthansa Cargo even for three days. In the course of the call for a strike, the VC made serious allegations and claimed, among other things, that no improved offer had been received. The Kranich countered sniffily that they were annoyed that the strike had been called before a round of negotiations. Ultimately, the "last-minute negotiations" seem to have brought them so close that the VC has withdrawn the call for a strike. Further details of a possible compromise are to be communicated in the next few hours or days. "We are pleased that a result could be reached at the negotiating table and that further disadvantages for customers, employees and companies can be avoided," said Marcel Gröls, Chairman of Collective Bargaining Policy, "today important first steps towards sustainable cooperation were taken."

Malta: Free bus service with the Tallinja Card from October 1, 2022

From October 1, 2022, local public transport in the Republic of Malta will be largely free of charge. After Luxembourg, it is the second EU country to take such a step. The measure was decided over a year ago and thus before the recent price increases. However, not all public transport users will benefit from the elimination of tickets, as tourists will still have to pay the regular fares. People residing in Malta and holders of the personalized Tallinja card will no longer have to pay anything to use the buses from October 1, 2022. Transport Malta explained, among other things, that the personalized Tallinja card is the basis for free use of public transport. This must still be scanned when boarding the bus. However, no credit will be debited in the future. Anyone who does not have such a card or who falls under other exceptions will still have to pay. Tourists who do not organize a personalized Tallinja card will still have to pay the regular fares after October 1, 2022. In summer, each bus ride costs two euros and in winter, 1,50 euros. Greece: Rioting drunkard arrested after Easyjet flight

On Friday, September 2, 2022, Easyjet flight U28935, operated with the Airbus A320neo with the registration G-UZHV, had to make an unscheduled stopover in Thessaloniki. On board, a 22-year-old Briton is said to have gotten into an argument with several passengers and crew members. The man is said to have been drunk and had to answer to an investigating judge in Greece. The judge ordered pre-trial detention. The Unruly PAX is accused of endangering the safety of the passengers and crew. The further course of criminal prosecution is still unclear, but charges are expected to be brought by the public prosecutor. Flight U28935 was en route from London-Gatwick to Paphos. The man is likely to have consumed a large amount of alcohol, as numerous empty bottles were found around his seat. He got into a heated argument with the crew and other passengers. The captain then decided to make an unscheduled landing to have the troublemaker removed. This also resulted in a delay of several hours to the flight from Paphos to Gatwick. Easyjet stated, among other things: "The easyJet cabin crew is trained to assess all situations and act quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers is never at risk. Although such incidents are rare, we take them very seriously and do not tolerate abusive or threatening behavior towards our staff. Lufthansa is in last-minute negotiations before the next strike

With the threat of a second wave of strikes looming, the AUA parent company and the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union are making another attempt to resolve the conflict. Both sides confirmed this morning that they are meeting today for negotiations. During the night, the VC announced a second wave of strikes starting tomorrow, which could only be prevented by a "serious offer" from Lufthansa. Meanwhile, the airline announced that it wanted to increase its workforce on a large scale. Negotiations began at 10.00 a.m. A decision must be made by 12.00 noon at the latest as to whether flights will be cancelled for the threatened strike days starting Wednesday. According to the new call for strikes, departures of Lufthansa passenger aircraft from Germany are to be struck tomorrow and Thursday. The strike at the freight subsidiary Lufthansa Cargo is planned from tomorrow to Friday. During the first wave of strikes on Friday, Lufthansa cancelled the entire program of its core airline. More than 800 flights with 130.000 passengers were cancelled and the company said it suffered economic losses of 32 million euros. Lufthansa wants to hire 20.000 employees For legal reasons, the VC can only call on employees in Germany to take industrial action. The strike will therefore only affect departures from the Lufthansa core company and Lufthansa Cargo from German airports. The subsidiaries Eurowings, Lufthansa Cityline and Eurowings Discover are not affected by the industrial action. In the midst of the ongoing strike, the company announced plans for a major increase in staff numbers. "We will hire almost 20.000 employees by the end of next year, which means roughly 1.000 employees per month," said Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr at a press conference.
