Winter service at Munich Airport is ready

With the onset of the cold season, winter service at Munich Airport also begins: From next Tuesday, November 1st, specially trained employees will be on call around the clock. The winter service can be deployed at any time if required, ensuring safe flight operations even in bad weather. The winter service column comprises 181 vehicles, including 66 tractors from companies in the area surrounding the airport. In total, more than 600 men and women are involved in winter service, of which around 520 come from agriculture and from haulage companies in the region. Up to 190 emergency workers per shift ensure that areas within the airport fence are free of snow and ice. In order to ensure that airport operations run as smoothly as possible, large areas have to be cleared when it snows: the two runways alone, as well as the aprons and taxiways, cover around 5,6 million square meters, the equivalent of more than 780 football fields. Clearing a runway at Munich Airport takes around 30 minutes. In addition to tractors with snow ploughs, numerous special vehicles are also used, including 22 sweepers, six loading milling machines and two snow groomers. The cleared snow masses are transported to six specially set up snow dumps. The winter service is alerted by the traffic management of Munich Airport, which monitors the condition of the operational areas around the clock. In addition to the current forecasts from the German Weather Service, the traffic management also uses an early warning system for black ice, which receives permanently updated data from a total of 18 measuring points distributed across the airport. In addition, the braking values on the runways are continuously checked with the help of special vehicles. It is not only the traffic areas of the airport that have to be kept in good condition.
