FRA: First train of the new Sky Line railway presented

A train from the new Sky Line train was presented for the first time at Frankfurt Airport yesterday. In the future, the new train will connect Terminal 3 to the existing terminals. The first of a total of twelve trains was delivered from the Siemens Mobility production plant in Vienna. In the coming weeks, the vehicle will be prepared for the first test runs, which are planned for 2023. With the new Sky Line train, travelers will arrive from the long-distance and regional train station directly at the main building of Terminal 3 in just eight minutes. The trains will run every two minutes between Terminal 365 and the existing terminals, 3 days a year. The new Sky Line train complements the existing transport system that passengers already use between Terminals 1 and 2. With the commissioning of the new train, up to 4.000 people per hour and direction will be able to travel to and from Terminal 3. The system operates around the clock, automated and driverless. Each of the twelve trains consists of two permanently connected carriages, each of which is a good eleven meters long and 2,80 meters wide and weighs around 15 tons when empty. One carriage per train is always reserved for non-Schengen travellers.

Cuba extends tourist visa validity

While travelers to the Caribbean state could previously purchase a tourist card for a stay of 30 days, the visa now entitles you to a stay of 90 days. In addition, the visa can be extended once for a further 90 days. As Tourism Minister Juan Carlos García announced on Twitter last Sunday, since November 1, travelers have been able to apply for the tourist card, which is mandatory for entry, for a stay of up to 90 days. Previously, the purchase of a visa was only permitted for a maximum of 30 days and could be extended once for a further month. An extension is still possible from now on: Within the period of stay, the tourist card can be increased for a further 90 days, so that the visa has a maximum validity of 180 days. The extension of the visa validity is intended to give tourism in Cuba a new boost after the Cuban government admitted that the tourism forecast of 2,5 million visitors calculated at the beginning of the year is unlikely to be achieved. It remains questionable whether this will boost tourism in the country. Anyone who has been to Cuba can no longer enter the USA visa-free with ESTA. However, this is not a general entry ban. Only participation in the visa waiver program, i.e. visa-free entry, is no longer possible. Instead of the uncomplicated ESTA authorization, which costs 21 euros and is valid for two years, a regular visa must then be applied for even for tourist stays. However, in most cases this is only possible with an appointment at the consulate, for which one often has to wait months.

First time to Germany: Eva Air connects Taiwan with Munich

For the first time, the Taiwanese airline Eva Air is flying to a German destination: From now on, there will be four flights a week from Taipei to the Bavarian capital. The Taiwanese metropolis will be served from Munich on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. A Dreamliner will be used - the long-haul aircraft Boeing 787-9. The first flight was carried out with a Boeing 777 with a special "Hello Kitty" paint job. So far, the carrier, which has been a member of the Star Alliance aviation association since 2013, has flies to the European metropolises London, Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna and Milan. EVA Air currently serves 68 destinations on four continents worldwide. The fleet currently consists of 90 aircraft - around two thirds of which are long-haul jets. "We welcome EVA Air as a new star in the Munich sky. EVA Air complements our diverse Asia offering, particularly with its very good connecting flights. The resumption of flights between Taipei and Munich expands our intercontinental network and is also a positive sign of the continuous recovery of traffic at the Munich location," said Airport Managing Director Jost Lammers.

Tata plans to merge Air India Express and Air Asia India

The Indian low-cost airline Air Asia India is now fully owned by Tata Sons. A merger of the carrier with Air India Express is currently being prepared. In the future, this will operate under the Tata brand. Formally, the subsidiary Air India has acquired all of Air Asia India's shares. Tata Sons wants to reduce the number of brands and merge individual airlines. The Indian competition authority has already given the green light for the project. Air Asia India was originally launched as a joint venture between Tata and Air Asia. During the Corona pandemic, the continued existence of this airline was at stake, but the Indian majority owner, who also took over Air India, committed to the carrier. The minority shareholder from Malaysia has since bought the stake. The next step is to merge Air India Express and Air Asia India. It is currently planned that the joint company will be positioned as a low-cost carrier and will fly under the Tata brand. The final decision on the brand has not yet been made, so changes may still occur.

Graz with 195.564 passengers in Q3/2022

In the calendar months of June, July and August 2022, a total of 195.564 passengers used Graz Airport. During this period, 2.813 commercial flight movements were carried out. During the first nine months of the current year, the Styrian airport had 423.053 passengers. This was significantly higher than the number of passengers in the same period last year. However, the figures could not be matched to those before the pandemic. 2022 flights were carried out in the first three quarters of 6.418. The airline Eurowings recently reactivated the Stuttgart route. However, this will be temporarily suspended again shortly. Another piece of bad news for the winter of 2022/23 is that Corendon Europe is reducing its presence. Linz and Salzburg are also affected. KLM is increasing its capacity because the hub connection to the Amsterdam-Schiphol hub is being served more frequently. Innsbruck: 125.172 travelers in Q3/2022

Innsbruck Airport had a total of 2022 passengers in the third quarter of 125.172. 1.477 commercial flight movements were carried out. In direct comparison with the same period last year, the number of travelers more than doubled. In the first nine months of the current year, the Tyrolean airport was used by 588.709 passengers. There were 5.827 commercial flights during this period. Similar to Salzburg, in Innsbruck it is not summer but winter that is the season when the main business takes place. This is due to the fact that many skiers use this airport as a landing place for their holidays. Although the first quarter of 2022 was much better than the winter of 2021, Innsbruck was significantly below the volume it had before the corona pandemic. A clear recovery is emerging for the winter of 2022/23, as many winter charters have already been registered. There are also new scheduled flights. Innsbruck figures at a glance: Month Flights Change from previous year Passengers Change from previous year September 489 153% 40.103 145% August 471 53% 42.850 76% July 517 88% 42.219 121% June 513 227% 40 142% May 404 387% 505 27% April 117 1.224% 461 754% March 50 843% 4.238 1% February 087 2.213% 141 010% January 11.901 998% 2.070 122% Total: 539 12.799 (The figures shown come from Statistics Austria).

General strike: 40 percent of all Brussels flights canceled as a precaution

Brussels Airport expects that the general strike announced for November 9, 2022 will have a significant impact on flight operations. As a precautionary measure, the airlines have canceled around 40 percent of the planned connections. Discussions are currently underway with partners and airlines to determine whether additional measures are necessary to avoid chaos. The airport has asked the airlines to contact their passengers and rebook if possible. Brussels Airport appeals to those passengers who have to travel next Wednesday to use web check-in options and only travel with hand luggage. From today's perspective, the loading of suitcases cannot be guaranteed.

Swan Hellenic sends two ships to Antarctica

In winter 2022/23, the shipping company Swan Hellenic will use the expedition ships SH Vega and SH Minervia in the Antarctic. A total of six different tours are offered, each lasting between ten and 19 days. The SH Minerva is heading for New Zealand and makes stopovers in the Antarctic on the way there. The sister ship, which is identical in design, sails from Ushuaia via the Antarctic to Cape Town. Extensive excursions into the eternal ice are offered.
