TAP: Union calls flight attendants to strike

The airline TAP Air Portugal is facing a cabin crew strike on December 8 and 9, 2022. The SNPVAC union is calling on the flight attendants to stop work on both days. If the measure is not canceled, significant restrictions on air traffic are to be expected. The call was justified by the "systematic violations" of the current works agreement and the temporary emergency agreement. The employee representatives also stated that management had made blatant wrong decisions and was showing "a lack of respect for the crew members".

Israir wants to buy Smartwings for 44 million euros

The airline Israir intends to take over the Czech Smartwings for a price of 44 million euros. This is stated in a mandatory publication published on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. Smartwings does not wish to comment on this at the moment. The Czech aviation company has been providing ACMI services for Israir on a regular basis for several years. Now an offer has been made to take over Smartwings. The Czech carrier is currently majority owned by Jiří Šimáň and Roman Vik. A company from China is also involved as a minority shareholder. The former subsidiary CSA has already been separated from the group and is now a sister company. It is currently unclear whether Israir will accept the offer. If so, it can be assumed that a structure will have to be created that formally guarantees EU majority ownership. Smartwings does not wish to comment on the possible takeover by the carrier from Israel.

Schönefeld: BER Terminal 5 before the final end

Terminal 5 at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport could be taken offline forever. The supervisory board plans to decide on this on November 18, 2022. It was shut down - initially temporarily - in the wake of the corona pandemic and used, for example, as a vaccination center. The buildings, some of which date back to the GDR era, are not only expected to incur high operating costs for the airport company, but investments running into the millions are also expected to be necessary to restart them. Given the continued low number of passengers and the fact that several carriers have reduced their services from BER, this is not expected to be worthwhile. It was originally planned that the former Schönefeld terminal would continue to operate until Terminals 3 and 4 were built. It was then to be closed. The corona pandemic massively disrupted the plan. It is currently not foreseeable that the capacities of Terminal 5 will be needed. There is no publicly known plan for a possible subsequent use.

Airplanes in Russia: Avolon is also suing insurers

Avolon is another major lessor who has filed a lawsuit against aircraft insurers. The group is demanding compensation from Lloyd's for ten aircraft that were not returned by Russian airlines despite repeated requests. Earlier this week, it was announced that competitor Carlyle Aviation Partners had filed a lawsuit against around 30 insurance companies in Florida. A total of 23 aircraft were not returned by Russian carriers. According to Reuters, Avolon wrote off around 2022 million US dollars on the ten aircraft in question in the first quarter of 304. The matter is quite piquant for aircraft insurers, as estimates suggest that potential compensation of around eleven billion US dollars could be at stake. Payments are being refused, among other things, on the grounds of the war or that they know exactly where the aircraft are. But the lessors do not want to accept this and are therefore suing their insurers for payment of the insurance benefits. Long proceedings are to be expected. One expert also said that the extent of the problem could place a heavy burden on some insurance companies and their reinsurers.

Third quarter of 2022: Linz with 90.885 passengers

The Upper Austrian Linz-Hörsching airport was used by 2022 passengers in the third quarter of 90.885. 1.313 flights were carried out during this period. Compared to the same period last year, the number increased by around two thirds. In the first nine months of the current year, the Upper Austrian airport counted 174.354 travelers. They traveled on 2.923 commercial flights. This means that passenger volume has increased considerably in direct comparison with the same period last year. However, it was below the pre-crisis volume. Linz recently had to report bad news, as Corendon Europe is reducing its presence in Upper Austria in the 2022/23 winter flight schedule. The Austrian airports of Salzburg and Graz are also affected by the cuts. Linz figures at a glance: Month Flights Change from previous year Passengers Change from previous year September 467 62% 29.504 94% August 429 66% 30.337 79% July 417 60% 31.044 133% June 428 229% 32.520 1.945% May 380 258% 24 117% April 37.583 274% 119 – March 14 871% 194 – February 53 5% 836 – January 161 101% 2 – Total: 690 173 (The figures shown come from Statistics Austria).
