October 2022: London-Luton with strong passenger growth

London Luton Airport, which is mainly used by low-cost and holiday airlines, had around 21 passengers during the local autumn school holidays between 30 and 2022 October 450.000. In total, over 1,3 million passengers travelled through the airport in October, bringing the annual total to over 11,1 million, an increase of almost 240 percent year-on-year. As both Wizz Air and easyJet continue to expand their route networks, 142 destinations across Europe and North Africa were available to choose from during the holiday period. These included the newly added departure destinations Dubrovnik, Sarajevo and Skiathos. Popular city break destinations included Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lisbon and Paris, while Corfu, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca. “Our teams work incredibly hard to provide passengers with an easy and friendly service. This is reflected in the overwhelmingly positive customer satisfaction results: four out of five passengers rate their experience as very good or excellent. We look forward to continuing to provide our customers with outstanding service this winter and during what is expected to be the busiest Christmas period since 2019,” said Clare Armstrong, Head of Guest Experience at London Luton Airport.

Almost five million passengers used Frankfurt Airport in October

Passenger numbers at Frankfurt Airport rose significantly in October compared to the same month last year. A total of 4,9 million passengers used the airport last October, an increase of 45,3 percent, as the operating company announced in a press release. Due to the autumn holidays, flights to holiday regions in particular were in high demand. However, the number of passengers was still 23,3 percent below the October figure in the pre-crisis year of 2019. Cargo volume continued to decline, being 11,7 percent below the previous year's figure. According to the company, the reasons for this were the overall economic slowdown and the existing restrictions on airspace due to the war in Ukraine. The number of flight movements, on the other hand, rose by 18,8 percent to 35.638 takeoffs and landings. At the group's international airports, passenger numbers continued to rise thanks to the ongoing recovery in demand. For example, at the 14 Greek regional airports, passenger numbers rose by 16,7 percent to 2,8 million passengers. This means that the total volume of Greek airports in October was again significantly higher than the pre-crisis level of 2019 (plus 11,4 percent). Passenger volume at Turkey's Antalya airport increased by 4,5 percent to around 4,0 million passengers.

The number of local passengers last month was 1.769.307, with 640.530 passengers, meaning the proportion of transfer passengers was 27 percent. Tyrol: Railjet connection planned between Innsbruck and Lienz

There has been no direct train connection between Lienz and Innsbruck for almost a decade. This was moved to the road in 2013 and has been offered by bus since then. Now there is a prospect that it could make a comeback. This time, however, it is unlikely to be a purely domestic connection, because according to ORF, the Austrian Federal Railways are considering an international connection between Vienna and Zurich via Lienz and Innsbruck. This would have the side effect of connecting East Tyrol and the state capital of Tyrol again without having to change trains by rail. The bus connection between the two cities currently offered as part of the VVT is considered suboptimal by many Tyroleans. The direct rail connection was discontinued in 2013 amid protests from local politicians and citizens. The Semmering Base Tunnel and the Koralm Tunnel now give serious hope that it could make a comeback. Specifically, the ÖBB is considering running individual Vienna-Zurich connections via Lienz and Innsbruck. With the opening of the two tunnels mentioned in the previous paragraph, the travel time would be comparable to that achieved on the current route. However, it will also be up to politicians to set the "course" accordingly. In any case, according to ORF, the plan is to be included in the Tyrolean coalition agreement between the ÖVP and SPÖ. Talks have also already begun with South Tyrol, which belongs to Italy. However, a short-term start of the possible new rail connection is not expected. The first non-stop train could roll in five years at the earliest, according to sources at the Austrian Federal Railways.

Autumn holidays: 21 million passengers in Europe affected by delays

Across Europe, more than 21 million passengers have already had problems with their flight this autumn. Almost one in four air travelers was affected by delays or cancellations. In the event of flight cancellations and serious delays of more than three hours, travelers are entitled to compensation if the airlines are to blame for the problems. In Europe, around two million travelers were affected by such serious complications in October - 1,6 million can make a claim because the airlines are responsible for the complications in each case. "As our analysis shows, European airports were chaotic again this October. Not only the lack of staff, but also the two Eurowings strikes in Germany exacerbated the situation in the autumn. But many passengers do not know that they can make a claim of up to 600 euros if there are extensive problems. In Germany alone, around 219.000 travelers are entitled to compensation in October. This is the second largest proportion in Europe after Great Britain. On our website, affected passengers can check their entitlement free of charge before contacting the airlines directly or with our help,” explains Julián Navas, legal expert at AirHelp. Flight problems: These are the rights of passengers The amount of compensation is calculated based on the length of the flight route. The legal compensation claim depends on the actual length of the delay at the destination and the reason for the cancelled or delayed flight. Affected passengers can enforce their compensation claim retroactively, up to three years after their flight date. Extraordinary circumstances such as bad weather or medical emergencies can cause the operating airline to
