Dominican Republic: Tourism numbers overtake pre-crisis levels

Travelers in the Dominican Republic should arrive at the airport three hours before their scheduled departure in December. The reason for the call by airport operator Aerodom is the large influx of holidaymakers in the Caribbean state. Tourism in the country is, however, recovering more and more from the effects of the corona pandemic. Unprecedentedly high numbers of holidaymakers are causing delays at airports in the Dominican Republic. For this reason, airport operator Aerodom has recommended that travelers should arrive at the country's airports at least three hours before their scheduled departure to ensure that all scheduled connections are made. The number of tourists is already exceeding the number from the pre-pandemic year of 2019, as Check24 reports. This also shows that tourism in the Caribbean state is recovering noticeably. At Las Américas Airport alone, which is located near the capital Santo Domingo, the operating company expects over 600.000 travelers in December. Since the high season starts in December, the individual processes at the airports have already been strengthened, but longer waiting times at check-in and at security checks cannot be ruled out. During the peak travel season, holidaymakers from Europe and North America in particular flock to the Dominican Republic to escape the winter. The local authorities have not required CoV-specific documents for entry for some time now, and there are no mandatory infection control measures in the country. Nevertheless, an online form called an e-ticket must be filled out for entry and exit, which is checked at the airport.

Airbus eliminates corruption cases

Airbus has agreed with the criminal authorities in France to pay a sum of millions to avoid possible prosecution on suspicion of corruption in Libya and Kazakhstan. The Paris criminal court has confirmed the agreement, which provides for the payment of 15,8 million euros, as the German aviation portal Aero reports. The possible corruption cases concerned sales of aircraft, helicopters and satellites in Libya and Kazakhstan between 2006 and 2011. These cases emerged during investigations into allegations of corruption for which Airbus had already paid a fine of almost 2020 billion euros in France in an agreement reached in 2,1. With an unprecedented billion-dollar fine, Airbus ended long-running corruption investigations in three countries. The European aircraft manufacturer paid a total of 3,6 billion euros in France, Great Britain and the USA.

Airports in Germany: fewer passengers, a little more freight

The recovery in passenger demand at German airports remains at just under three-quarters of the pre-crisis level: Compared to the previous month of September, the number of travelers has fallen by almost 180.000, totaling 17,65 million arriving and departing passengers. A total of 17,65 million passengers used German airports in October, according to a press release from the airport association ADV. Compared to October 2021, the volume rose by 39,4 percent. The number of commercial flight movements was 156.003 take-offs and landings, 14,5 percent higher than the previous year, and almost three-quarters of commercial flights were carried out compared to 2019. This means that more than 140,35 million passengers were counted at German airports from January to October, but 34,9 percent is still short of the pre-crisis level. Absolute cargo volume continues to increase compared to the previous month of September. The 431.736 t still represent a decline of 8,3 percent compared to October 2021, but growth compared to the pre-crisis level in 2019 is 2,9 percent. Compared to the same month last year, loadings fell by 5,3 percent, and unloadings also fell by 11,6 percent. In the cumulative view of 2022, cargo volumes developed by -4,9 percent to 4.218.634 tons - compared to the pre-crisis level in 2019, this represents growth of 6,0 percent and an additional almost 240.000 t.

Possible Tuifly reduction in Charleroi worries trade unionists

In Belgium, trade unionists are currently concerned that Tuifly Belgium could reduce its presence at Charleroi Airport next year. According to local media, the works council has already held an extraordinary meeting. The Belgian media outlet Sundinfo, among others, reports that Tuifly Belgium is to reduce its services from Charleroi to the following destinations in summer 2023: Algiers/Oran (Algeria), Casablanca/Tangier (Morocco), Djerba/Tunis (Tunisia). All other destinations are to be relocated to Brussels, Liège and Antwerp. However, there is no official confirmation of this. Nevertheless, employee representatives are alarmed because they fear that there could be transfers and/or job cuts. A works council member also stated that a list of questions had been repeatedly sent to management regarding these "persistent rumors", but that the questions had remained unanswered. It will therefore be necessary to wait and see how things develop.

Flixbus definitely wants a German 49-euro ticket

In Germany, a network ticket for 49 euros per month is being planned as a successor to the nine-euro ticket. In contrast to the Austrian climate ticket, this will again only be valid for regional transport. Flixbus was initially rejected, but the company is not giving up. Company boss Schwämmlein is increasing the pressure on German politicians and is vehemently demanding that long-distance bus services must be part of the planned 49-euro ticket. He also argues that some regions are much better connected by bus than by train. German politicians, on the other hand, currently want to stick to the fact that long-distance services are excluded from the network ticket, which is a difficult "German regulation" to understand compared to the Austrian climate ticket.

Wetlease: India relaxes rules for wide bodies

The Indian government has responded to pressure from airlines and relaxed the existing wet lease rules for a limited period of one year. In concrete terms, this means that widebodies can be used for up to 12 months under ACMI contracts. Demand in India is currently particularly high and at the same time local carriers are suffering from a shortage of staff and a lack of spare parts. This means that some providers are unable to operate parts of their own fleets. In order to solve the problem, aircraft, often including wide-body jets, are being leased from abroad. The current regulations only allow this in exceptional cases and then only for a few weeks. Now the ministry responsible for civil aviation has decided that such ACMI contracts can run for up to 12 months for the time being. The Indian government wants to use this to counteract possible bottlenecks or chaotic conditions in aviation. However, there is a small but subtle catch: in international traffic, this relaxation only affects routes between India and the USA and Europe. Furthermore, use within the country is possible, but must be applied for separately. The wet lease machines can only be rented by Indian carriers, so foreign providers do not really benefit from them. In the medium term, India wants to ease the restrictions here too, although there is no timetable for this yet.

Skyalps confirms talks with Klagenfurt Airport

The South Tyrolean regional airline Skyalps is currently being considered as a potential candidate for non-stop flights from Klagenfurt to Munich and/or Frankfurt am Main. The carrier confirmed that there are official talks with the Carinthian airport. In December 2022, majority owner Lilihill plans to present new hub connections. These are said to be Munich and/or Frankfurt am Main. Talks are underway with Skyalps, but the South Tyrolean company emphasizes that there is "nothing ready to be announced" yet. In any case, it would only be a real hub connection if the operator had a codeshare agreement with the Lufthansa Group. This is not the case with Skyalps. The company recently decided to fly from Bolzano to Kassel-Calden instead of Frankfurt.

Klagenfurt: Lilihill withdraws lease agreement

The politically controversial lease agreement for non-operational areas between Klagenfurt Airport and a sister company of Lilihill has been cancelled. This was confirmed by Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ). This would have rendered the lawsuit brought by the state-owned investment company KBV irrelevant. The cancellation of the lease agreement is part of the ten-point program that investor Franz Peter Orasch agreed with the governor.
