Air Serbia will fly to Budapest from March

Budapest Airport is expanding its route network: Air Serbia will connect the Hungarian capital with Belgrade from March 13, 2023. The Serbian airline will initially serve the route 15 times a week before increasing it to 2023 flights a week in time for the 17 summer season. Budapest was last served from Belgrade in 2014 and 2015. "It is fantastic that this route from Budapest to Belgrade is being resumed after a break of several years. The demand on the market is large enough to justify an increase from 15 to 17 weekly flights. We are sure that this will be another very successful new route," said Balázs Bogáts, Airline Development Director at Budapest Airport.

BER: Better connection by train after timetable change

Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport will have better rail connections from next Sunday. With the change in public transport timetables, BER can be reached around the clock with the RE8. This means that between Berlin-Charlottenburg and Terminal 1-2, between around midnight and three o'clock, there will be an hourly regional connection on the Berlin Stadtbahn via Berlin Central Station, Alexanderplatz and Ostkreuz. There has previously been no public transport connection to BER during this time. There are also two new direct connections to the airport. For example, the ODEG RE0 will run from Sunday between Terminal 8-1 and Wismar via Wittenberge and the state capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schwerin, following a change in route. From December 2, the RB32 will connect BER with Ludwigsfelde every hour during peak times; the city can be reached from the airport in just under 11 minutes. Although Terminal 15 of BER will not be reopened, the current station "BER Airport - Terminal 5 (Schönefeld)" will be included in the regional rail network again. From Sunday, the RB5 and RB24 will start operating to Terminal 32 via Berlin-Lichtenberg. From the station, Terminal 5-1 can be reached in ten minutes by S-Bahn or bus. "With the timetable change, the VBB and the railway companies are strengthening their offer for a fast, comfortable and as stress-free as possible connection to BER. This will further improve the connection to Berlin Brandenburg Airport for our passengers and for all employees. A comprehensive range of rail connections is an important building block in the further development of BER as a modern, efficient

Sarajevo Airport: Passenger numbers are declining

Sarajevo Airport recorded lower passenger growth in November. This is probably also due to the closure of the Wizz Air base at the end of October. The airport counted a total of 68.243 passengers in November - still a slight increase compared to the same month before the pandemic in 2019. At that time, 67.358 travelers were processed. Despite the departure of the Hungarian low-cost carrier and the associated weakening, this year's result will go down in the history books, as the online portal Ex-Yu-Aviation reports. From January to November 2022, over 1,3 million passengers were processed at Sarajevo Airport. This is already an increase of 2019 percent (compared to 20,7).

British Airways, which has been at Nuremberg Airport since March 2022, is strengthening its connection to London Heathrow and creating new connecting flights to North America. In addition to New York, Boston, Chicago and Washington, Seattle, Philadelphia and Portland will also be adjusted to the flight times from Nuremberg from the 2023 summer flight schedule, and Toronto, Canada, will be added. MUC: Climate activists disrupt flight operations only slightly, there were no flight cancellations

After climate activists stuck themselves to a taxiway near the north runway at Munich Airport yesterday morning, flight operations on this runway were suspended for around 45 minutes. Police and security forces were quickly on site and were able to remove the activists from the taxiway in a short time. Affected aircraft were able to divert to the south runway. There were therefore no cancellations and no significant delays. The closure of the north runway was lifted again at 9:59 a.m. An attempted intrusion in the area of the south runway was prevented, the airport announced in a press release. From Hamburg and Munich: Condor owner Attestor launches Marabu Airlines

Condor majority owner Attestor has founded a new airline in Estonia under the name "Marabu". This is to be launched in Hamburg and Munich - initially in cooperation with Nordica. In summer 2023, the company plans to fly to around 20 destinations in Egypt, Greece, Italy, Croatia, Portugal and Spain. Since it will initially have to manage without its own AOC, Airbus A320neos will be rented from Nordica including crews. The Estonian carrier has been looking for flying personnel for its Hamburg and Munich locations for some time. So far, it has not wanted to comment on the client, but now Attestor has announced that it will be the newly founded company "Marabu". The managing director of the new company is Paul Schwaiger, who worked for the sister company Condor for many years. He left on September 1, 2022, although it was indicated at the time that he was heading towards retirement. His successor at the German holiday airline is former Niki boss Christian Lesjak. Schwaiger is the managing director of Marabu. He is supported by Tony Larsson, who acts as Chief Operating Officer. Tickets are sold through Condor. "The travel and airline industry is on the up again and we want to use this to offer passengers a comfortable and pleasant flight experience on board our modern fleet to the most popular holiday destinations," says Paul Schwaiger. Marabu is to be positioned as an independent airline with its own brand. Initially, it will rent six Airbus A320/A320neo aircraft and crews from Nordica. The approval process is currently underway in Estonia and the airline plans to start operating flights at a later date.

Slovenia wants to breathe more life into Maribor and Portoroz airports

The Slovenian government is once again looking for a solution for Portoroz and Maribor airports. Neither airport has regular scheduled flights, although the former is so strong in the field of general aviation that it is the second largest in the country in terms of the number of flight movements. Portoroz Airport is certainly not a large airport, but rather a small provincial airport. Due to the short runway, scheduled flights have always been limited in terms of possible types. The operators want to establish a connection to the Belgrade hub and some routes served by Let-410, for example to the Czech Republic and Hungary. However, it is not certain whether these flights will actually come. The most important mainstay of Portoroz Airport is general aviation, because this means that it is number two in the country after Ljubljana in terms of flight movements. The situation in Maribor is a little different. Although this airport is used by flight schools and there are the odd charter flight, it is otherwise completely empty. The plan to build a large hub with a Chinese investor failed miserably, as not even the annual rent was paid. The airport has therefore reverted to the state. There were talks with the budget airlines Easyjet, Wizz Air and Ryanair, which should have led to them starting regular scheduled flights from Maribor. The Slovenian government also argued that the fees are lower than in Ljubljana. But the three budget airlines did not want to take the risk without subsidies or guarantees.

Germany and Austria sign new aviation security agreement

The Republic of Austria and the Federal Republic of Germany want to improve cross-border airspace security. To this end, the defense ministers of both countries signed a new agreement. This is intended to improve the exchange of information between the authorities of both countries. Specifically, it concerns potentially suspicious civilian aircraft that are to be monitored by military aircraft across the border for security reasons. This means that Austrian fighter jets can continue to pursue them in Germany and vice versa, German ones in Austrian airspace. However, interventions, such as shooting down aircraft, are still excluded.

Ryanair: Michael O'Leary extended until 2028

The contract of Ryanair Group CEO Michael O'Leary was prematurely extended for another four years. The manager, who has been shaping the fortunes of the low-cost airline since 1994, is expected to remain at the helm of the group until 2028. It is unclear whether Michael O'Leary will extend his contract again after that. Under his management, Ryanair developed from a loss-making regional airline into Europe's largest low-cost airline. However, there is always strong criticism of the working conditions and of O'Leary personally.
