Villach: ÖBB discontinues intercity buses to Italy

The Austrian Federal Railways are discontinuing their last remaining international long-distance bus routes. These are the intercity buses that ran from Villach to Venice and Trieste. The seasonal service that has been in place for several years will no longer exist in 2023, an ÖBB spokesperson confirmed to Aviation.Direct. For several years, Austrian Federal Railways buses have been running several times a day from Villach to Trieste and Venice. These will no longer exist in the future, as the ÖBB is discontinuing them. The trips were operated by the subsidiary Österreichische Postbus AG. This change has no impact on the Klagenfurt-Graz intercity bus route, on which the intervals are being shortened. An ÖBB spokesperson explained to Aviation.Direct: "The Villach - Udine - Venice intercity bus connection was a seasonal service. This will no longer be offered in the new season in the 2023 timetable year. The ÖBB is focusing on existing rail services for its service to Italy." The intercity buses are a special feature of the ÖBB route network, as the rail tariff applies. In contrast to the long-distance buses offered by competitors Blaguss Reisen and Dr. Richard under the Flixbus brand, the climate ticket is valid. A portrait of the intercity buses to Italy and between Klagenfurt and Graz can be found at this link at Aviation.Direct.

Australia: Competition Authority scrutinizes high ticket prices

In Australia, the competition authority is taking a closer look at ticket prices in domestic traffic. The authority announced that it will closely analyse the behaviour of airlines, as ticket prices have risen significantly above pre-crisis levels. The fact that there is high demand but supply has not been significantly expanded plays a decisive role. The ACCC suspects that there is a deliberate lack of expansion in order to keep ticket prices as high as possible. The authority does not accept the argument that fuel costs have risen alone. It will therefore closely monitor the behaviour of providers operating in domestic traffic, as it wants to ensure that there is sufficient capacity on the market and that flight prices fall again. It also points out that functioning competition is more important than ever. As an example, it cites that in October 2022, fares were around 2019 percent higher than in October 27. The authority's report states that in September 2022, 44 airlines flew internationally to and from Australia, compared to 58 three years earlier. This circumstance could also have led to rising prices.

Germany’s Transport Minister describes BER/MUC sticker campaign as “criminal machinations”

The self-proclaimed climate protectors of the "Last Generation" struck on Wednesday at Berlin-Brandenburg and Munich airports. In Bavaria, the glue was unpacked on the northern runway. This time, the federal police intervened quickly and were able to prevent further illegal access to the apron. The fact alone that Berlin-Brandenburg Airport was hit by the self-proclaimed "climate protectors" for the second time within a few days shows that there are blatant security deficiencies in the area of security at German commercial airports. The "Last Generation" is obviously making use of this. The glue was unpacked in both Berlin and Munich, so that the "climate gluers", who according to various media reports were even supposed to receive monthly salaries for their "actions", could stick things on again. The federal police arrested those people at both airports who had illegally gained access to the security area. The "Last Generation" even claimed on social media that the "actions" had been reported to the federal police. A spokeswoman for the executive branch strongly denied this. The claim was not true. Both in Berlin and Munich, there were new restrictions on flight operations due to the adhesive campaigns. These were minimal, but it was announced that in Bavaria a medical plane was able to make an emergency landing 20 minutes late. The Interior Ministry confirmed that a passenger on board had suffered a heart attack and that an immediate landing was not possible due to the restricted operations caused by the air stickers. According to official statements, the Federal Police in Munich were able to prevent a much larger scale of the incident, as so-called activists are said to have attempted to gain access to the southern runway area.

Malta Air: Higher Labor Court banned works council election meeting

An election meeting of the approximately 8 employees of the Malta Air base in Berlin-Brandenburg was actually supposed to take place on December 2022, 300. This was supposed to appoint an electoral board for the establishment of a works council. However, the State Labor Court put a stop to this, because the holding of the meeting was prohibited by court due to a lawsuit by Malta Air. The course of events is quite remarkable, because in the first instance the Ryanair subsidiary was turned down by the Cottbus Labor Court. The Berlin-Brandenburg State Labor Court saw the matter differently and prohibited the holding of the election meeting at short notice. The Verdi union was thus forced to cancel it, so that the course could not be set for the establishment of a Malta Air works council in Germany. It is well known that the Ryanair Group is not particularly happy with works councils or unions. For example, in Austria the election of the last Laudamotion works council was not recognized. The company sued against it and ultimately lost in court. The ruling was not really of any significance to the employees, as Laudamotion no longer operates as an airline. Its successor, Lauda Europe Ltd., has no works council at its Vienna-Schwechat base. In Germany, Malta Air operates on behalf of its sister company Ryanair DAC. In concrete terms, this means that the staff employed in Germany are employed by the Maltese carrier. There is currently no works council. The Verdi union wants to change this, but the employer is defending itself using legal means. According to the partial ruling of the regional labor court, this was initially successful. "We accept the court decision, of course, but regret it," said Verdi union secretary Dennis Dacke. "The employees at Malta Air are determined
