Bodensee-Airport looks back on a successful 2022

Around 340.000 passengers used the airport last year to travel to and from Friedrichshafen. The 339.550 passengers correspond to an increase of 211.393 passengers and an increase of 165 percent compared to the previous year. This is 70 percent of the volume compared to the pre-Corona year of 2019, the airport announced in a press release. Mallorca and Antalya were the top holiday destinations in demand. The most important connection for business and holiday travelers is still the connection to the Lufthansa hub in Frankfurt, which is used by almost 20 percent of travelers. Holiday destinations such as Palma de Mallorca, Heraklion and Rhodes as well as Antalya are on the flight schedule for the coming summer. "In view of the fact that there was virtually no travel in the first 3 ½ months of 2022 and that the airport was also affected by capacity bottlenecks at Frankfurt Airport and the resulting cancellation of Lufthansa flights in the summer, we are very pleased with the results achieved," said Claus-Dieter Wehr, Managing Director of Friedrichshafen Airport. "In addition, the insolvency proceedings under self-administration were successfully concluded in 2022 and necessary investments in the infrastructure were made, including the implementation of energy-saving measures to achieve the climate targets." Despite a continuing challenging environment, combined with cost increases and cautious travel demand from consumers, Friedrichshafen Airport is successfully on track with the restructuring plan it has adopted, Wehr continued.

LBC: Lübeck Air gives first insights into summer flight plan

After the charter airline Sundair had already announced its summer destinations from Lübeck and is offering Corfu as a new holiday destination for the 2023 season in addition to Crete, Mallorca and Antalya, the "home carrier", Lübeck Air, is now following suit and publishing the routes that will soon be bookable from Lübeck. The airline has chosen the routes that went particularly well last summer. From May, flights will then be to Bern, Iceland, Corsica, Menorca and Sardinia. A completely new destination, Naples, is on the flight schedule from Lübeck for the first time. "Unfortunately, we cannot fulfill all wishes; Lübeck Air has carefully selected the destinations based on the demand of its guests," explains press spokeswoman Stefanie Eggers. "We can continue to offer the somewhat more exclusive travel niche in Lübeck, because with Lübeck Air, hand and standard luggage, drinks and a small on-board meal as well as check-in are still included in the ticket price. The special features are also demonstrated by destinations such as Iceland and now Naples, which fits perfectly into the portfolio with its proximity to the Amalfi Coast, Vesuvius, Capri and Ischia.” Lübeck Air currently offers year-round flight connections to Bergen, Munich, Salzburg and Stuttgart – for the first time this winter season, Scandinavian Mountains Airport will be served until April. The airport is located right between the alpine ski regions around Sälen in Sweden and Trysil in Norway. There will be extended connections to Munich and Stuttgart from May. The destinations will then be served several times a week during the day, the airport said in a statement.

Ethiopian Airlines resumes flights to China

Ethiopian Airlines announces that the frequency of its flights to Chinese cities will be increased from February 6, 2023. The African airline will return to pre-Covid-19 levels once the Chinese government lifts restrictions. From February 6, 2023, Ethiopian Airlines will fly daily to Guangzhou, while weekly flights to Beijing and Shanghai will be increased to four each and the three-times-weekly flight to Chengdu will be maintained. From March 1, 2023, flights will then return to pre-pandemic levels, with daily flights to Beijing and Shanghai and ten and four weekly flights to Guangzhou and Chengdu respectively. Ethiopian will thus offer a total of 28 weekly passenger flights to China once flight operations are fully resumed, the carrier said in a press release. "We are pleased that thanks to the Chinese government's easing of flight restrictions, we can increase the frequency of our flights to Chinese cities. China is one of Ethiopian Airlines' largest markets outside Africa and increasing flight frequencies will help stimulate trade, investment, cultural collaboration and bilateral cooperation between Africa and China in the post-Cold War era. Thanks to our large route network across Africa, increasing the number of flights to Chinese cities will bring Africa and China closer together. We are keen to further expand our service to China in the future," said Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Group.

Norse wants to focus more on ACMI and chater flights

The long-haul low-cost airline Norse Atlantic Airways achieved a capacity utilization of 2023 percent in December 61. The carrier said it had nine Boeing 787s in operation itself and as part of wet lease contracts for other airlines. In the future, the company plans to focus more on the charter and ACMI segment. It is currently in the process of concluding longer-term contracts. These are intended to generate additional income, especially in winter 2023. However, the company has not yet named any potential clients. It was able to set a record for ticket sales on its own account, especially shortly before Christmas. At the turn of the year, the 300.000 passenger mark was exceeded since the start of operations. So far, around 1.500 commercial flights have been carried out. In December 2022, there were 228 flight movements. There were 33.172 passengers on board. "We continued to implement our business plan to reduce costs and diversify fleet utilization during the winter. I am particularly pleased that we successfully completed nine wet lease and charter operations in December. As a new entrant into this market, we have clearly demonstrated that Norse has both the technical capabilities, high crew standards and flexibility required to satisfy our customers in this segment. The company has started 2023 with strong forward bookings in our key markets. We will be announcing further summer routes from London to the US shortly and I am pleased to confirm that we will also be offering a new destination from the EU to the US shortly,” said Bjorn Tore Larsen, CEO of Norse Atlantic Airways.
