Frankfurt Airport is reorganizing identity checks

The Frankfurt airport operator Fraport wants to significantly speed up passenger and hand luggage checks. A more efficient use of private security forces and new types of baggage scanners should help with this. The new scanners save passengers from having to remove technical devices such as tablets or liquids from their hand luggage. Instead of around 80 passengers per hour, up to 250 passengers can then be checked at the new stations in the same time. This was shown by a test run in 2019. The fundamental reorganization of aviation security checks is made possible by the fact that the federal government has again transferred the organization of security checks at the airport to Fraport in a loan agreement. Since the turn of the year, Fraport has managed the deployment of private security forces itself. The Federal Police now also oversees security policy. With outdated technology and high fees, German airports have fallen behind compared to other European airports. Last summer, for example, there were long queues at checkpoints in Cologne, Düsseldorf and Berlin.

FAA: Flight system failure attributed to human error

A disruption in the communications system for US air traffic last week was due to a human error. An employee of a service provider accidentally deleted files that were important for operations, the US aviation authority said yesterday. The glitch largely paralyzed air traffic in the USA for hours. During the night of last Wednesday until the morning, pilots had no access to the system known as Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM), which provides information about dangers, changes to airport facilities and information that can affect flights. The FAA then suspended air traffic for safety reasons. A preliminary report from the authority now states that contract staff "accidentally deleted files" while working on the system's databases. The investigation is still ongoing, but there is no evidence that the disruption was intentional or that it was a cyberattack. The FAA had been criticized for the disruption. The aviation authority said it had taken steps to make the NOTAM system "more resilient."

Salzburg: Considerable criticism of the planned ACG weather system

If Austro Control's plans go ahead, there will no longer be any on-site weather service at Salzburg and Innsbruck airports in the future. Both federal states are up in arms against this, as critics see significant disadvantages in the planned centralization in Vienna. It has long been known that Austro Control's flight weather service at Innsbruck Airport is to be closed down. In the future, the data relevant to pilots is to be supplied from Vienna. It has now been announced that the office in Salzburg is also on the brink and is also to be centralized in Vienna. A trial operation is currently underway in which the provision of weather data is collected both in the traditional way by on-site staff and by the ACG headquarters in Vienna. This has been the case since April 2022. In the future, the meteorological data for Salzburg and Innsbruck airports will only be provided from Vienna. There is increasing criticism of this, as there are fears that centralization could be at the expense of flight safety. However, Austro Control has strongly denied this. However, there are internal reports that contradict the official view of the ACG. These are actually only intended for "internal use", but the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation reports on the content. For example, the head of the Salzburg air traffic control office is of the opinion that the reliability of the new system that is to replace the office is "not reliable". For example, the sensors would provide data that he would classify as questionable. In particular, they would not be able to detect slight fog, which often occurs in isolated areas in Salzburg.
