Swiss names 20 aircraft after Swiss tourist regions

To mark the end of its 20th company anniversary, the Swiss Lufthansa subsidiary, in cooperation with Switzerland Tourism, will christen 20 Airbus A220-100/300 aircraft with the names of Swiss tourism regions and locations. Swiss is concluding its 20th company anniversary with a special campaign: 20 Airbus A220-100/300 aircraft will be christened with the names of various Swiss tourism regions in order to represent the diversity of the Swiss tourism landscape above the clouds too. In cooperation with Switzerland Tourism, a competition was launched in December last year in which over 50 destinations applied with creative submissions. The applications were examined by a jury based on the four factors of creativity, originality, authenticity and their connection to Swiss. "We received a large number of excellent and original applications, and making a selection was not easy. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all participants for their creative commitment and are delighted to be able to bring the various unique regions of Switzerland out into the world with our aircraft," says Anja Beeler, Head of Strategic Communications & Content Creation. The Swiss community also used a global vote to select three winners, who will each receive an aircraft christening on site in the hangar for their very creative application. These are Bad Zurzach (AG), Nendaz (VS) and Viamala (GR). Over the course of the year, the airline will hold two of these ceremonial christenings for these destinations at Zurich Airport and one at Geneva Airport.

Valencia introduces tourist tax

A tourist tax is being introduced in the Spanish region of Valencia: The tax is expected to be payable from the end of 2023. Holidaymakers in Valencia will probably have to pay a tourist tax from the end of the current year. An exact introduction date is not yet known. This will be due for all people who want to stay overnight in the Spanish Mediterranean region, as Check24 reports. The costs will vary depending on the accommodation chosen. For example, a higher price will be charged for high-class hotels than for rental accommodation. The price range is therefore between 50 cents and a maximum of two euros per night and person. The overnight tax has been due on the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca since 2016. An exception is made for certain groups of people: for example, children under 16 do not have to pay. Also not included are travelers who are in the region for health reasons. Refugees who are in Valencia because of a war or similar conflict are also exempt from the fee.

Tourism in Thailand on course for recovery

Tourism in Thailand recovered surprisingly strongly from the coronavirus crisis last year: 11,15 million foreign visitors came to the Southeast Asian country. In 202, when far-reaching travel restrictions were in place due to the pandemic, there were only around 428.000, according to the ORF. In December 2022 alone, 2,24 million guests were received, almost ten times as many as a year earlier. The development exceeded the government's expectations. The tourism sector is very important in Thailand; before the pandemic, it accounted for around twelve percent of gross domestic product. The government therefore announced that it would invest the equivalent of more than 100 million euros to attract more guests. Despite the clear upward trend, the industry has not yet been able to return to pre-crisis levels. In 2019, there was a record number of almost 40 million foreign tourists.

Agreement: flight attendant strike canceled at Tap

A seven-day strike by the cabin crew of Tap Air Portugal was called off almost at the last minute. The SNPVAC union announced that the work stoppages would not take place because they had received a significantly improved offer from the employer, which was accepted by a large majority at a members' meeting called at short notice. Previously, the fronts between the two collective bargaining parties had hardened. The employee representatives had announced a one-week strike, which was to take place from Wednesday, January 25, 2023. The airline concerned announced shortly afterwards that 1.316 flights would have to be canceled. This will not happen because an agreement has been reached. Ricardo Penarroias, chairman of the SNPVAC union, explained that both sides had come massively closer together and made concessions. The compromise that was agreed upon should be satisfactory for both the employees and the company. The basis for the announced strike would thus no longer apply.

Strike at BER: Passengers are entitled to these rights

The Verdi union has announced a strike by ground handling employees, airport operators and aviation security staff at the German capital's BER airport for next Wednesday, January 25. Verdi is expecting a high level of participation. There will probably be massive restrictions on air traffic to and from Berlin. Julián Navas, passenger rights expert at the world's largest passenger rights organisation, AirHelp, explains what rights affected passengers have. Passengers are entitled to compensation "Due to the warning strike, several thousand passengers will not reach their destination as planned. Those affected are entitled to alternative transport if the delay is three hours or more. The rebooking to another flight must be carried out by the operating airline itself. Domestic flights can optionally be transferred to a train ticket. If the airline does not take action on its own initiative, affected passengers should set a deadline of three hours after the scheduled departure time. If the request is still not met, travellers can look for their own alternatives and bill the airline for the costs. If the delay is more than five hours or if the flight is delayed, the airline is also obliged to refund the full price of the ticket. If the delay is more than two hours and the flight distance is more than 1.500 kilometers, the operating airline must also provide meals and drinks to passengers at the airport. In addition, two phone calls or the sending of two emails must be made possible. If necessary, the airline must also provide accommodation and facilitate transport there. In any case, it is advisable to request this service from the airline.” The right to compensation is available from airport staff.

Ryanair summer timetable from Vienna: Fewer destinations, but more flights

The low-cost airline Ryanair will offer a total of 2023 routes from Vienna-Schwechat in the 75 summer flight schedule. According to the company, the frequencies are being increased on around 30 routes. However, the low-cost airline is also discontinuing some connections. Ryanair Group CEO Michael O'Leary did not present any news at all as "new routes", as Helsinki, Copenhagen and Tuzla were introduced as new routes. However, the three destinations have long been served from Vienna-Schwechat and at least in part the statement that these would be summer routes for the first time is borderline, as the former subsidiary Laudamotion already had Copenhagen in its portfolio. It was only recently announced that Ryanair will no longer serve the destinations Menorca and Suceava, Sibiu and Kosice from Vienna-Schwechat, among others. The list of canceled destinations has now become significantly longer. With Dortmund and Bremen, two German routes are no longer included in the 2023 summer flight schedule. Furthermore, the destinations Agadir, Bristol, Gdansk, Liverpool, Sandefjord ("Oslo Torp"), Pisa, Zaragoza and Alghero are being abandoned. The list of canceled destinations is therefore significantly longer than that of the "new additions". In summer 2023, the Ryanair Group plans to operate from Vienna with a total of 19 aircraft stationed there. The vast majority of the aircraft will be operated by the Maltese subsidiary Lauda Europe, so that the Airbus A320 will continue to be the dominant aircraft type. The group's sister companies Buzz and Malta Air continue to have aircraft stationed in the Austrian capital. Taking into account the frequency increases that Ryanair will make on 30 routes, the number of weekly flights is expected to increase to around 800. In direct comparison with

Emirates: Mother gives birth to baby on Airbus A380

It doesn't happen often, but it does happen again and again: On January 19, 2023, a baby was born on board Emirates flight EK319 from Tokyo (Narita) to Dubai. An Airbus A380 was used. Although airlines stipulate that pregnant women are no longer allowed to fly after a certain week, it does happen again and again that children are born on board aircraft. This is what "happened" on January 19, 2023 on the way from Narita to Dubai. A baby was born, as the airline officially confirmed. Both the mother and the newborn are said to be in good condition and were taken care of by medical professionals after landing. The crew is said to have assisted with the birth and there were no complications, so the flight - with the newborn passenger - could continue as planned.
