Virgin Atlantic christens Airbus A330neo in honor of Queen Elizabeth II

Virgin Atlantic has named its Airbus A330neo, registration G-VEII, in honour of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away last year. The aircraft is named "Queen of the Skies". "Just like Queen Elizabeth during her historic 70-year reign, Virgin Atlantic is proud to fly the flag of the United Kingdom around the world. We are delighted to soon welcome the 'Queen of the Skies' to our fleet and hope this is a fitting tribute to an unforgettable, much-loved monarch," said Corneel Koster, Chief Customer and Operations Officer at Virgin Atlantic. Virgin Atlantic has a long tradition of naming its aircraft after inspirational women, including Diana in honour of Princess Diana. Virgin Atlantic's current fleet includes the Lade Emmeline (G-VLIB), which honours the founder of the suffragette movement and women's rights activist Emmeline Pankhurst. Fearless Lady (G-VEVE) celebrates the life of Eve Branson, the late mother of Virgin Group founder Richard Branson. Eve led an incredible life: she enlisted in the WRENS during World War II, took gliding lessons disguised as a boy and was a pioneering air hostess on the dangerous routes of British South American Airways. Queen of the Skies is the fourth Airbus A330neo in Virgin Atlantic's fleet. The other three are Billie Holiday (G-VJAZ), Space Oddity (G-VTOM) and Eliza Doolittle (G-VLDY). Virgin Atlantic aims to operate the cleanest, most environmentally friendly fleet in the skies and has ordered 12 more Airbus A330neos for its fleet.

Helvetic wants to make the flight attendant profession more attractive with a new model and shared accommodation

The airline Helvetic Airways wants to make the part-time flight attendant job more attractive and is introducing a new model. This should enable employees to organize their work assignments as flexibly as possible. In addition, several accommodations near Zurich Airport are to be made available for subletting. Many airlines are now having serious problems recruiting new cabin crew. While it was once a dream job, interest has decreased significantly, particularly due to the consequences of the corona pandemic. This also affects part-time jobs, which are particularly important for airlines in order to be able to respond flexibly to current demand. For many providers, however, the problems are also home-made, as the jobs at one or two airlines are not financially attractive. Remuneration that is lower than that of supermarket employees is certainly possible in some cases. In Switzerland, the salaries of cabin crew are rather high compared to other European countries, but interest in this profession in the Confederation is not exactly such that applicants are literally knocking down the doors. Helvetic Airways wants to offer additional incentives with flexible part-time models including the possibility of using a kind of "shared apartment". They want to be more attractive than other airlines. In the current times, the airline's good reputation alone is no longer enough to attract potential new employees. Helvetic has been offering unusual employment models for several years, which are aimed specifically at students or people who work seasonally in the winter season and are always looking for another job in the summer.

Skyalps continues to expand

The regional airline Skyalps will expand its fleet with a fifth de Havilland Dash 8-400. The aircraft will be used for the planned growth, as the company plans to open bases outside of Bolzano. The fleet is currently partially registered on the AOC of Luxwing and that of Skyalps. By around March, all flight operations will be carried out independently. The company initially started out as a virtual airline. Luxwing was initially solely responsible for the operational execution of the flights. Skyalps has had its own certificates for a few days now, so that it will soon be able to carry out all flight operations itself. The Skyalps fleet currently consists of four de Havilland Dash 8-400s, at least some of which have been used by Austrian Airlines and Tyrolean Airways in the past. In the medium term, it is also possible to introduce regional jets into the fleet in order to be able to serve routes that are outside the range of turboprop aircraft. The company does not want to concentrate solely on Bolzano, but intends to open additional bases at other Italian airports. Regarding the fifth de Havilland Dash 8-400, managing director Alex Spinato told the Italia Vola portal that it would soon be joining the fleet. The company is also now making greater efforts to conclude codeshare and interlining agreements. Priority is likely to be given to working with Lufthansa, as Skyalps intends to add Frankfurt am Main in the medium term. For the time being, however, the company will be flying to Kassel-Calden.

Azores Airlines is scheduled to be privatized by October 2023

The airline Azores Airlines is expected to be privatized by October 2023. Preparations are already being made for the separation from the parent company Sata. The regional government of the Azores decided to take this step in part due to requirements set by the EU Commission as a result of state aid granted. However, there are also certain expectations of potential buyers, as they want to ensure that Azores Airlines can maintain jobs and continue to be able to meet so-called public service obligations. There are currently no plans to privatize the regional airline Sata. First, it is up to the government and parliament. According to Duarte Freitas, Minister of Finance, Planning and Public Administration, the so-called task list will initially be approved by the end of February 2023. The aim is then to bring negotiations with potential buyers to a positive conclusion "by September or October 2023". A private sale is not planned, as the privatization will be put out to tender. Bidders can then submit their offers by a certain deadline. The regional government will then enter into exclusive negotiations with the provider that it considers to be the best. If everything goes according to plan, it should be clear by October 2023 who will take over Azores Airlines. Similar projects have been repeatedly delayed in the past and it is not unlikely that this privatization will not work out right away either. First, 51 percent of the share capital of Azores Airlines will be sold. According to the regional government, the tender will contain a clause that will guarantee employment for a certain period of time. This is intended to ensure that the workforce,
